CANFIELD GETS BACK TO REGIONAL FINAL

STREETSBORO OH- The Canfield Cardinals traveled to take on the Streetsboro Rockets in a battle for the regional semifinal. The Cardinals battled all night long, and continued their dominant 2020 season.

Broc Lowry got the ball rolling for the Cardinals as he danced into the end zone from five yards out in the second quarter, to give Canfield the first lead of the night. With time running down in the first half, Lowry connected with Ethan Fletcher for a touchdown pass right near the pylon. This touchdown would give the Cardinals a 14 point lead with just 6 seconds left in the first half.

Streetsboro couldn’t get any points on the board in the first half, after a terrific defensive effort from the Cardinals. Streetsboro was not used to getting shut down offensively, coming in averaging over 53 points a game.

In the second half, the Cardinals continued to push forward. An 80 yard drive was capped off by another Lowry touchdown run, and the Cardinals were up 21 to 0 to start the 3rd quarter. Canfield’s place kicker Jonathan Schmidt would later knock in a 31 yard field goal to make it 24-0. Streetsboro would score late in the 4th, but were unable to convert the 2 point conversion.

Canfield would come away with the victory by a final score of 24-6. Canfield remains unbeaten at 9-0, and will take on Chardon next Friday in the Regional Final.

LADY ROCKETS LIFTOFF AGAINST MOONEY

BELOIT, OH-  The Cardinal Mooney Volleyball team’s season came to an end on Thursday night with a 4 set loss to Streetsboro in the West Branch sectional final (25-16 13-25 16-25 21-25)

In the first set, the Cardinals came out aggressive and efficient. Katie Hough showed right away that she’d be a force to be reckoned with rallying 5 kills in the set. Mooney only committed 2 attack errors in the set and hit .313 in the set.

The second and third sets were a completely different story as Mooney could not get any consistent offensive flow. They hit in the negative for both sets which is a big reason why they fell in those sets 13-25 and 16-25. Hough stayed strong however tallying 7 more kills in those two sets, even after briefly exiting the match with a bloody nose and switching jerseys.

In set 4 Mooney tried to get some rhythm back in their offense by letting Marissa Landers set and putting usual setter Sydney Reider in a defensive specialist position. And it worked. Mooney got their attack percentage back into the positives. They also were able to get middle blocker Megan Petty back involved who didn’t collect a kill in sets 2 or 3. She had a stretch of 3 consecutive kills and a block to put Mooney up 13-10. But Streetsboro at this point had too much momentum and was just clicking on offense. They played clean and collected through Mooney’s improved play and took set 4 21-25.

Katie Hough recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs. Sydney Reider closed out her career with a double-double with 20 assists and 11 digs. Marissa Landers also recorded a double-double with 11 assists and 10 digs. Megan Petty had 10 kills 5 blocks and 4 digs. Caitlyn Sapp had 10 digs.
