UNITED TAKES THE STING OUT OF THE HORNETS

HANOVERTON OH- United came into week 2 ready for a fast start against their opponents from East Canton.  The offense for Eagles would take flight early and often on their way to a dominating 55-21 win Friday night in Hanoverton.

The United defense put their stamp on things early recovering a fumble after a strip sack on East Canton’s first drive giving the United offense an early opportunity.  Luke Courtney wasted no time as he would find Grant Knight for a 9 yard touchdown putting the Eagles ahead 7-0. East Canton answered the Eagles score with an impressive drive resulting in a 34 yard QB scamper to tie the game at 7-7. That would be as close as the Hornets would come the entire evening as the United offense was cleared for takeoff. Luke Courtney once again would find Grant Knight for the second time in opening stanza this time from 23 yards out making it 14-7. The 2nd quarter was much of the same for the duo. Following another East Canton turnover Courtney would connect once again with Knight on a 40 yard scoring strike giving the tandem the hat trick in the first half and a United 21-7 lead.

The Eagles defense would force a 3 and out followed by a shanked punt setting the stage once a gain for an aerial attack by United. Courtney on the very next play would find his man Knight in the middle of the field and the talented wide receiver would do the rest taking it 61 yards to pay dirt for the 4th time of the first half and a 28-0 lead. Knight would finish the evening with 9 catches 171 yards and 4 touchdowns. United on the next possession put together an impressive drive just before halftime capped off by an Andrew Ogilvie 4 yard rushing touchdown.

Following an East Canton score Luke Courtney decided he was not finished adding to his stat line as he found Brock Rhoades on a 4 yard touchdown pass making it 41-14. Courtney would finish his impressive evening connecting on 24 of his 32 passes for 357 yards and 5 touchdowns. Nick Hardgrove also was huge benefactor of the Eagle aerial attack collecting 8 catches for 148 yards. It was not a catch by Hardgrove however that had the United crowd standing.  Following a late touchdown by East Canton making the score 48-21, the senior wideout Hardgrove would collect the very next kickoff and scamper down the sidelines 77 yards to the house making it 55-21.

United now sitting at 2-0 on the young season sets their sights on a familiar face of yester year as the Eagles travel to Crestview for an important week 3 matchup.

UNITED GIRLS SOCCER COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH SARAH HODGSON

HANOVERTON OH- When talking about small schools in soccer, the girls program at United has been one of the most consistent in the area. It would be hard for you to find a losing record in their program’s history since it started in 2006.  They are two seasons removed from a district championship appearance, and they’re looking to get back to that spot this time around. With Sarah Hodgson back to coach the Eagles for another season, United has a great chance to make a run at it.

Coach Hodgson took the time to come on to YSN’s Running Point to give us a park behind the curtain and preview the Eagles season.  She talks with Ty Bartell and Anthony Hartwig about the schedule they’ve put together, the growth of the fairly young program, and much more! Fly with the Eagles and check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Sarah Hodgson.

CLIPPERS COME BACK STRONG

COLUMBIANA OH- The  early season EOAC matchup between Columbiana and United was a contest between youth vs experience. The youth of Columbiana came through in victory as the Clippers claimed a straight set 25-12 ,26-24 ,25-15 home win over United.

Columbiana looked to right the ship after an opening defeat on Saturday, quickly racing out to a 14-1 early lead. United early on in their first game of the season just could not overcome the early deficit on their way to surrendering the first set. Clippers head coach Jennifer Martin was pleased with her team’s quick start “We definitely had an advantage this being our second game of the season. The nerves were gone and the girls were excited to play their first league game.”

The second set saw both teams exchange points much of the way as United started to gain confidence.  Columbiana would take a 24-20 lead late, but United was able to reel off 4 straight tying it at 24. Columbiana would go on to squash any thoughts of a comeback in the second and would go on to finish off the Eagles in the third set.  Coach Martin on her team’s ability to counter the height of United “I thought we tipped the ball well tonight. Our girls did a great job of finding the open space on the floor.”

The Clippers Ava Heinrich turned in a stellar all around performance with 10 kills, 13 digs, 8 points.  Ellie Jackson filled the stat sheet contributing 18 assists, 6 kills, 5 digs, and 6 aces.  Teammates Kelsey Cameron and Cameron Perkins held down the defense with 10 and 8 digs respectively. Brighleigh Kocanjer also contributed15 points in the victory for Columbiana.

United was led by Grace Knight  with 9 digs and 4 kills while Olivia Grubb added 15 assists and 7 digs.  Both teams will be back in EOAC action Thursday as United travels to East Palestine while Columbiana will host Leetonia.

EAGLES DEFENSE STANDS UNITED IN VICTORY

ATWATER OH-

In the first three weeks of this year’s football season, like years prior, has featured a lot of non conference games that present new challenges and matchups that today’s generation may have yet to see. This was exactly the case on Friday night in Atwater, Ohio, as The Waterloo Vikings welcomed in The United Golden Eagles for a matchup that has not occurred in over twenty years! Also debuting new bleachers and pressbox, along with a renovated concession stand and bathrooms. It is safe to say, Waterloo Stadium is decked out for the foreseeable future.

In a matchup where anything can happen, since the two teams do not have an ideal book on their opponent, we saw both The Eagles and Vikings jockey for position to start the game.

A three and out by both teams on their first offensive drive set a defensive tone early. United got on the board first, as Nick Hardgrove was found in the endzone by Luke Courtney for a touchdown pass to put The Eagles up 7-0.  It was a play so nice they did it twice, as Coutney connected with Hardgrove on a 32 yard touchdown reception in the second quarter, putting United up a pair of scores 14-0.

Hardgrove was also present on the defensive side recovering a fumble for a turnover that directly led to a final score before the half, as Courtney found Grant Knight for a phenomenal 53 yard touchdown pass to end the half up 21-0. The second half was made up of a ton of defensive plays, highlighted by United playing the clock really well, while maintaining their advantage. Caden Marshall (United) and Jayden Hakin (Waterloo) each punched a touchdown in on the ground in the second half; however, time was not on The Vikings side, as United put the finishing touches on a 28-7 opening week victory.

United will look to continue rolling into next week against the only team to beat them in the regular season in 2021, in a rematch with East Canton.

Waterloo will look to get back on track as they lock horns with Strasburg Franklin, a team which they beat a year ago 34-18.

NEVER FAR FROM HOME; SIGLER TO SERVE AS AD WITH BEAVER LOCAL

EAST LIVERPOOL, OH- It’s hard not to be a little bit romantic about a relationship between a student-athlete and their hometown.  Even more when you talk about their alma mater, and what the lessons learned have done for that person in their life.

For Josh Sigler, there were only a few things that would take him away from his duties as United Local Girls Basketball Coach.  One of those opportunities came knocking over the last month, and Sigler had to answer.

Beaver Local, a place that Sigler has called home since his days in school, and where he currently teaches, had an opening for their Athletic Director position after Bob Beam stepped down to take the AD position at Springfield.  While there were many applicants for the position, Sigler’s resume and passion for Beaver Local made the difference in the hire.

We caught up with the new leader of Beaver Local Athletics to talk about the process and plans he has for the future of the Red and White.
