UNITED TAKES CARE OF THE CLIPPERS

HANOVERTON OH- United came into week six action looking to maintain their edge as the EOAC conference schedule is full steam ahead. The Eagles offense sharpened that edge all evening as they took care of Columbiana 47-7 Friday night in Hanoverton.

The starting offense for United had to shake off some early rust having only played a little more than a quarter the previous week. Luke Courtney capped off a stalled opening drive connecting on a 34 yard field goal as the Eagles took the early 3-0 lead. Columbiana, dealing with numerous injuries, was down to their 3rd and 4th options at quarterback and struggled to get anything consistent going on offense. The Eagles offense would take advantage of what their defense was providing. Already leading 10-0, Luke Courtney and Grant Knight would hook up on a 50 yard touchdown pass and the Eagles were suddenly up 17-0.

Following another Clippers punt the Eagles took over deep in their own territory, looking to add to their lead. It was the Columbiana defense however who added to the scoring as Caleb Buchheit would intercept a Courtney pass taking it 33 yards to the house and the Clippers had life at 17-7. United squashed the Clippers momentum immediately as Jenson Baker would score from a yard out, capping a 50 second scoring drive and the Eagles were up 24-7. The combination of Courtney to Knight would connect again for the 2nd time increasing the lead to 31-7 on the next possession. Courtney would then tack on his 2nd field goal of the game from 32 yards making the score 34-7 at the half. Out of the locker room the Eagles offense was rinse-repeat as Courtney and Knight would do it for the 3rd time on a 25 yard connection as the score grew to 40-7.

Gavin Berger added a 22 yard touchdown run to cap off the night for the Eagles victory. Columbiana (0-6, 0-3) will head back home next Friday welcoming league leader Valley Christian to Firestone Park. United (5-1, 2-1) takes their high powered offense on the road traveling to East Palestine.

UNITED FLIES BACK IN WIN COLUMN

HANOVERTON OH- United entered week 5, coming off their first loss of the season, looking to quickly erase the memory of that defeat. Leetonia provided the eraser as the United offense wasted no time scoring quickly en route to a 44-0 victory on Alumni Night.

The Eagles took the lead early as Leetonia’s punter saw the snap sail over his head recovering in the endzone giving United a quick 2-0 lead on the safety. Following the ensuing free kick Luke Courtney hit Brock Rhodes in the flats and the senior wide receiver did the rest going 58 yds for the score. After a Leetonia 3 and out, Courtney found Grant Knight for a 35 yard touchdown pass and a 16-0 lead.

NIck Hardgrove would add a 35 yard touchdown run and the lead quickly grew to 23-0 in the 1st quarter. The 2nd stanza was much of the same as Luke Courtney would hit Parker Newburn from 9 yards out extending the lead to 30-0. Courtney would finish his night  in the first half going 6-6 135 yards and 3 touchdowns. Parker Newburn took over the signal calling at that point and he would find Hayden Casto for a 46 yard touchdown pass. Newburn would cap the first half scoring, adding another touchdown on the ground making it 44-0.

Leetonia (0-5, 0-2) is in the middle of a tough stretch of their schedule as they are set to travel to league leader Valley Christian next week. United (4-1, 1-1) looks to stay sharp heading into week six as they welcome Columbiana to Hanoverton.

A KNIGHT’S TALE

HANOVERTON OH- Over the years we have seen Grant Knight play a ton of different roles for the United football team. You can dig through his game tape and find him at quarterback, out wide, in the slot, not to mention what he’s been able to on the defensive side of the ball. He has meant the world to the Eagles, and now in his senior season, he has the chance to reward his efforts with some school records.  That is definitely on his goals list, but Grant has never been one to put personal accolades over team success. With Luke Courtney throwing to him, the Eagles offense has looked calm cool and collected. The Eagles are striving to win their first playoff game in program history. Grant Knight will be a huge part in that story.

Grant was able to hop on YSN’s Running Point this week to talk to us about his senior season. He chats with Anthony Hartwig, and Richie Juliano about his senior season, his goals for the team, and much more. Keep flying with the Eagles all season, and check out the latest United Football Player Profile only on YSN.

VALLEY PREVAILS IN BATTLE OF THE EAGLES

CAMPBELL, OH- It took a month of battling on the road to finally make it home to Campbell Memorial Stadium, but home truly was sweet for Valley Christian in a 36-17 statement victory over EOAC opponent, United.

Valley Christian would get on the board first with a Jordan Peete 8-yard scramble into the endzone to take a 6-0 lead.  However, United wouldn’t waste much time bouncing back as Luke Courtney would connect with Grant Knight in the corner of the endzone from 10-yards away, and tack on the point after to make it 7-6, United.

The second stanza would bring us some old-school EOAC smashmouth football as Jon’Trell Mixon would power his way in from 3 yards out, to give VC the lead back at 14-7 with the two-point conversion.

United’s next scoring drive would stall out at the 12-yard line, but one of the area’s top kickers Luke Courtney showed that he’s multi-dimensional with a 29-yard boot through the uprights to cut the lead to 14-10.

Ja’Sean Lindsey would shake off an early lower body injury right before the half to cap off a long Eagle drive, and punch it in with a stiff-arm fueled touchdown run to extend the Valley lead at 20-10 going into the locker room.

From there, Lindsey would add another score in the third frame from a yard out to increase the lead, and the back breaker would come shortly after as the Eagles would pick up a United fumble and return it 42 yards back to the house to complete their scoring at 36-10.

United would add on one more score in the fourth quarter with a Luke Courtney strike from 32-yards out, and would try to put together a historic final frame, but the effort ultimately came up short as time ran out.

Jordan Peete managed the offense with poise, going 5/11 through the air for 65 yards and a pick, but had 12 carries for 70 yards and a score.  Ja’Sean Lindsey led all performers with 17 carries that resulted in 130 yards and a pair of trips to the endzone, as will as a two-point conversion.  Jon’Trell Mixon had four touches and 16 yards on the night that featured a tuddy, and a conversion as well.

Luke Courtney continued to impress with a 12/24 performance under center with 118 yards, two scores and a turnover.  He also chipped in a field goal and two extra points for the Eagles.

United was held to only 68 rushing yards on the night, while Valley ran for 226 big ones.

Valley Christian (4-0) now turns their attention to Lisbon at home next Saturday, while United (3-1) will return home to take on Leetonia.

LATE HEROICS SAVE UNITED FROM REBELS UPSET

COLUMBIANA, OH- When you have two teams, one fighting to stay undefeated, and the other looking for their first win, you know it is going to be a battle to the end. That is exactly what happened in the week 3 matchup between United and Crestview as the Golden Eagles took down Crestview, 42-39 in exhilarating fashion.

United looked to get to 3-0 on the road and the Rebels pushed for momentum with a win at home. The momentum seemed to be in the rebels favor going into the half, with Crestview up 39-21 thanks to a 92-yard kickoff return by Dominic Yerkey and four straight scoring possessions to start the game. In the second half, the script flipped and it was all United. The Golden Eagles found a way back in the fourth quarter with help from Luke Courtney scoring two touchdowns and Brock Rhodes coming in clutch. With 3:50 left in the game, United worked their way down the field and managed to set up shop on the Rebels’ 32-yard line with just 15 seconds left. Courtney found Rhodes in the endzone and Rhodes out muscled the Rebels defender to come down with the game-clinching touchdown.

United will travel to Valley Christian Saturday night as they are set to take on the Eagles in EOAC play. Crestview will travel to Campbell Friday night to take on the Red Devils in MVAC play.
