URSULINE BASEBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MATT WEYMER

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Ursuline baseball might just be one of the most decorated baseball programs in the area. They always seem to be in the front of the conversation come tournament time in May. After waiting two years to play, the Irish are striving to live up to that standard in 2021. The Irish are off to 2-3 start to the season. They lost a Saturday double header to open the season against Howland, and St Ed’s. The Irish bounced back with back to back wins over Chaney, and LaBrae, before losing on Saturday to Walsh Jesuit. The Irish move on to travel to West Branch on Tuesday.

Irish skipper Matt Weymer took time out of his busy week to update YSN’s Running Point on the Irish squad. He chats with Ron Potesta about his team’s start to the season, what some of the expectations are in the 2021 campaign, and much more. The long overdue return of Irish baseball is upon us, you wil not want to miss a moment. Check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Matt Weymer.

URSULINE DROPS TWO TOUGH GAMES TO OPEN SEASON

STRUTHERS OH- There is nothing like having baseball back especially after a long year off.  This time, all the teams had to regroup and that was especially the case for the Ursuline Irish who lost a bunch of seniors last season, the season that they couldn’t play due to the pandemic as the Irish would start out the Catholic Tournament against the Howland Tigers.

Jonah Kirchner started the game on the mound for the Irish and would give up a run in the bottom of the first for Howland as McCleery scored for the Tigers.  The Irish would get two runs taking a 2-1 lead in the top of the second as Ian Barton hit a grounder to left field and had an error help the Irish score those runs.  There was some controversy however as even though the run did count, coach Weymer and UCF commit Brady Shannon thought he was safe at home plate and that it should’ve been three to one.

Those would be the only runs the Irish would have in any chance of beating the Tigers as in the latter innings, it was the Tigers getting three runs in a row going up seven to two and then nine to two.  The Irish scored two more runs but it wasn’t enough with Luca Ricchiuti and Kirchner coming home, but it wasn’t enough as the good pitching by Austen Price and Jared Mindek gave Howland the 9-4 victory.

In the second game in the Catholic Tournament against St. Edwards, it was a closer matchup throughout three and a half innings before the bottom of the fourth where the Eagles would get their first run on the day as Myslenski would double on a fly ball giving Matt Campbell the opportunity to score.

Ursuline this time had a big top of the sixth scoring three runs which was thanks to a CJ Frasco single which led Brandan Waters and Shannon scoring runs.  In the end however, St. Ed’s came back to win the game with Jackson Powell for the Eagles hitting a grounder to third and thanks to an error, Myslenski and Campbell went home along with Powell on the next hit.

In the end, the Irish would fall after being up three to one, falling six to three and falling to 0-2 on the season and in the Catholic Tournament.  Their next game is against the Chaney Cowboys at Cene at 5pm Monday.

HEADED HOME: URSULINE LADY IRISH SOFTBALL PREVIEW

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Head coach Mike Kernan and the Ursuline Lady Irish are back to work and ready to make some noise this season! Coach Kernan will lean heavily on his upperclassmen this season for leadership and dominant play! The Lady Irish are going to be led by a trio of college commits, Maris Barbato (Toledo), Emily Holland (Ohio Dominican), and Julia Nutter (Slippery Rock), will accompany a solid junior class that will look to teach the Ursuline way to the newcomers and younger players in the program.

YSN’s own, Billy McCartney and Quinn Puskar, had the opportunity to catch up with Coach Kernan to get an idea of what his expectations and goals are for this upcoming season, how COVID effected the Ursuline program throughout the course of last year and coming into this season, as well as, who we should keep an eye on from the team that could be making a big splash this year on the diamond!

Check out this special softball sneak peak at the Ursuline Lady Irish with head coach, Mike Kernan!

HEADED HOME: URSULINE FIGHTING IRISH BASEBALL PREVIEW

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Ursuline Irish are coming off a heavy senior driven class a year ago as head coach, Matt Weymer looks to lead this year’s squad onto the diamond at the end of the month!

Coach Weymer is looking to “re-stack the deck” after losing six starters from a year ago. One key starter returning is Brady Shannon, who recently committed to the University of Central Florida. Coach Weymer will look to lean on Brady in multiple ways this year, whether its playing multiple positions, multiple spots in the batting order, or for leadership throughout the season. Jonah Kirchner is another returner that Coach Weymer is excited about as he will handle a lot of pitching opportunities this season. Two new faces to look out for on the diamond this year will be middle infielder, Luca Ricchiuti, and the first baseman/pitcher Drew Kirila.

The standard at Ursuline is always high and Coach Matt Weymer always expects the most from his team as he is known to set the bar pretty high. For Ursuline, it is all about the tournament, Coach Weymer scheduled certain teams to push these young men, so they can be ready for anything that might be thrown their way during the OHSAA state baseball tournament at the end of the season!

CANFIELD EARNS RIGHT TO HOST IN DISTRICT SEMIS

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Both teams came into the game with 12 wins in the regular season.  However, as they say, once the tournament starts, throw the records out and instead, it’s either you are one and 0 and get another opportunity, but if you lose, no second chances as the fifth seeded Ursuline Irish who had a bye hosted the 10th seeded Canfield Cardinals who were coming off of a big win against 23rd seeded Ravenna

First Half

The first half saw the Irish get up to a seven nothing run really early with buckets from Terrance Pankey who was in concussion protocol just a week ago, Will Burney and Brady Shannon.  However, Canfield would come with their own power in the first from Jake Grdic who scored 10 points as it was 20-19 at the end of the first.

In the second, the Cardinals would find that momentum as Ursuline struggled with the turnovers.  Canfield was led by Trey Dye who looked like another Trey in Trae Young shooting dimes and making good fundamental moves.  Dye last week did not play in the second half due to his back, but played through this game even with a sore back.  Meanwhile for the Irish, they would only have a high of two points from Jakylan Irving along with Pankey and Geno Lucente.  At the half, the Cardinals were pulling away up 40-26.

Second half

The second half would not get any better for Ursuline.  Irving once again led the Irish and got some assistance from DeMarcus McElroy who had a two point field goal along with two made free throws.  Nick Pantelakis and Dye once again led the pack of cardinals who kept on flying away with the lead, stealing Ursuline’s lucky charms.  Ursuline would get some seniors in Tyler Beck who hit that same corner three against East and Zack Pipala as they would get some last minutes in with their career at Ursuline ticking away.

In the end, even with the Irish cutting the lead thanks to eight points in the fourth from Shannon, it was Canfield, the tenth seeded Cardinals doing the unthinkable and getting the 80-68 victory eliminating the Irish from the OHSAA Division II NorthEast district one Tournament.  Keith Gunther’s team is already looking towards 2021-22.

COWBOYS GALLUP AWAY FROM URSULINE

YOUNGSTOWN OH- When we saw these teams last time, it was the Cowboys of Chaney who had the lead since the first quarter, and even though Ursuline nearly came back to win, the Cowboys would hang on with a 67-62 victory.  This time, it was the Irish of Ursuline who needed a bounceback after losing to the East Golden Bears on Tuesday, while the Cowboys looked to sweep the Irish on the season.  Ursuline would also have to play without star sophomore Terrance Pankey who was out with an injury.

First Half

In the first quarter, we saw the Cowboys get off to a five nothing run early thanks to points from seniors Cam Lawrence and Sharrod Taylor who drained a three,  Sophomore and football star Jason Hewlett would also see some action getting four points in the first quarter.  For Ursuline, they cut the lead early with four points inside the perimeter from junior forward Brady Shannon and two points from guards Jakylan Irving and Will Burney.  However the irish would be down by nine at the end of one 17-8.

The second quarter would see a little change however as Vince Flauto for Ursuline who was getting the start hit a three cutting the lead to six.  Forward Freshman Jaden Payne wearing the number of the Goat Michael Jordan came into the game and sunk in two buckets while drawing the and-ones as he would make two of them.  Taylor would once again be the leading scorer for the Cowboys as well as Quincy Jones who scored two points on a field goal.  Chaney would go into the half now up by four 29-25.

Second Half

The second half was once again a back to back battle between two teams as Geno Lucente hit a corner three, but Chaney kept on finding their players wide open as the Irish tired to full court pressure.  That resulted in two dunks by Jones.  In the end however, the Cowboys would pull away and get their eighth win of the season as they would continue to make free throws after a technical on the Irish and would not look back,  sweeping the Irish once more with a 63-55 victory.

Ursuline Stats

DeMarcus McElroy had a point but was playing hard defense all night, Brady Shannon led the Irish with 23 points, Jaden Payne came off the bench with 12 points, Vince Flauto had eight, Geno Lucente had five, Will Burney had four and Jakylan Irving finished with two.

Chaney Stats

Sharrod Taylor’s fast speed led to him scoring 21 points. Cameron Lawrence finished with 17 points.  Quincey Jones with those two dunks finished with 12 points.  Jason Hewlett finished with seven points.  Clive Wilson had four and Josiah Gonzalez finished with two points.

Up Next

Ursuline (12-6) is looking for an opponent after their game against the Bristol Panthers in Bristolville (10-3) was cancelled.

Chaney (8-5) will as of now host Copley (7-9) Tuesday at 7pm.
