IRISH FIND LUCK IN OVERTIME

YOUNGSTOWN OH- After a great Saturday win against the Chaney Cowgirls which ended a four game losing streak, the Lady Irish were back at the Cafaro Gymnasium, the Lyden Family court has they hosted the Austintown Fitch Falcons who were in need of a bounce back, trying to get their sixth win of the season after a bad loss to Boardman on Saturday.  Many wondered if the lady Falcons would be able to hang with the Irish, especially since it looks like that they got their momentum back.

First Half

Well at the start of the first quarter, it was a shocker to some as the Falcons swarmed in for an early 10-0 run and the irish would call a timeout down 12-3, with a three pointer and a couple inside the paint by a 6’2 sophomore in Jocelyn Jourdan and a few field goals by Zayda Creque and Chelsie Wheeler.  The Irish would get their first three by Lily Scott and then some two’s by Alayna Smith and Meredith Gray.  At the end of the first, it was the Lady Falcons up 16-7.

During the second, the Lady Falcons were pulling away a bit, but the Lady Irish made the comeback as senior guard/forward Anisah Moorman would be fouled a few times as the Irish got into striking distance along with a three by senior guard Cara McNally.  The quarter would end however thanks to some buckets by Creque making it 26-25 Fitch at the half.

Second Half

The second half got interesting as it became a back and forth battle between these two teams.  In the third quarter for the lady Ursuline Irish, there was a three made by McNally which got the shooting going once again as it was going a bit ice cold.  Meanwhile, the lady Falcons would strike as Creque made two three pointers along with two pointers from freshman Ayla Ray, and Jourdan, taking the lead 38-36 going into the fourth.

In the fourth, we knew that these two would not go away from each other and these two were neck and neck.  On Ursuline’s side, Rachel Fabry who was mostly silent throughout the game shows that when it’s crunch time, she prevails hitting a three which gave the Irish the lead for a bit, until Creque and Wheeler came back once again with buckets on their own. Creque would try a three with only a few seconds to go, but the shot was missed.  Scott would try the same for Ursuline but instead, the shot was too late getting off the ground and we were going into overtime for some excitement with the score being tied at 47 all.

Overtime

This is where the tide would turn however as the Irish found their Lucky Charms that they were missing as in just minutes, the game went from a tie to an 11 point lead thanks to the tantum power of Moorman and Smith as they combined for ten points.  Ray would get a two and you’d also have the 5’7 senior in Emma Barlett getting a three for the Falcons, but it was not enough as the Irish improved to 9-8 with a 65-56 victory in overtime.

Ursuline Stats

For Ursuline, it was Anisah Moorman who scored a high of 25 points and 13 made free throws.  Teammate Alayna Smith had 12, Lily Scott had some great shots made on the night scoring nine points, Cara McNally had eight, Rachel Fabry finished with seven points and Meredith Gray finished with four points off the bench.

Austintown Fitch Stats

For the Lady Falcons, it was Zayda Creque finished with 16 points, Jocelyn Jordan with 14 points, Chelsie Wheeler finished with 10 points, Ayla Ray had six, Maddy McCann finished with five, Emma Barlett finished with three, and junior Julia Senediak finished with two points.

Up Next

Ursuline (9-8) will host the Bristol Panthers (9-2) who just got a 38-23 win against Crestwood.  Tip-off is for 6:30.  Austintown Fitch (5-12) will head to Howland to play the Tigers (5-8) according to their website.

GIVE US MOORMAN

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Ursuline senior Anisah Moorman is no stranger to playing basketball at an elite level. She played at St Christine’s before high school being coached by her uncle. That youth program seems to pop out talent at the high school level like its their job. Now a senior Anisah’s work ethic and drive hasn’t died down one bit. Her goals to be the best she can be are still the same, and she tries to instill that drive into the rest of her team.

The Irish have had to deal with their fair share of adversity. Like many teams in the area, they have had to navigate shutdowns due to COVID concerns. Anisah said it has been hard for the team to keep their competitive edge while stopping and starting throughout the year. But their tough schedule means they don’t take long to sharpen back up. Another reason the Irish have been able to persevere is their senior leadership. They have a large group of seniors that have been playing together for quite some time. Anisah and her senior teammates have no plans to end their careers any time soon. Their team goals have become laser focused on winning a district title. You do not want to be the team that gets in their way.

Anisah took the time to sit and talk with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig. She fit in the interview before a film session, which just backs up her drive to excellence. She talks with Anthony about the obstacles this season has presented, her favorite memories with the program, and much more. Gear up for the final stretch of the basketball season with this Lady Irish player profile “Give Us Moorman.”

MOONEY SWEEPS SEASON SERIES WITH IRISH

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The last time these two teams met just a few weeks ago, it was the lady Cardinals of Cardinal Mooney who came away with Holy War battle number one 46-35.  Now, just a day after National Girls and Women in Sport Day, it was time for round two in the Holy War, senior night edition and the lady Irish were hungry for revenge for what happened last time while not wanting to get swept  two years in a row.  Mooney coming into the game just came off of a 43-39 loss to the Lady Warriors of West Branch while the Irish were on a three game winning streak with a loss to Canfield 51-37 and were without one of their best defenders in Jamie Nelson who is in concussion protocol, with Lily Scott being implemented into the starting five.

First Half

The seniors of Mooney had a good first few minutes in the beginning, especially when senior Cherish Little got into the game and blocked an Alayna Smith put-back layup while receiving a standing ovation from the Mooney family and friends.  Before that, the Cardinals got their first two points thanks to an Administrative Technical Foul.  After that, the Cardinals would go up nine to three early on but got into a little bit of foul trouble which led the Irish to gain some momentum and score a few easy layups and two point jumpers from the Forward Smith, Guard Cara McNally and Senior Forward Anisah Moorman which cut the lead down to two.  Mooney would however go into the second with a seven point lead.

In the second quarter, it was the senior Cardinals leading the pack with a ton of GRIT as seniors Katie Hough and Angelina Rotunno both hit threes, while Gia Diorio and Olivia Rouser off the bench went into the paint scoring a few shots.  Meanwhile, Ursuline had an answer of their own with Anisah Moorman at the guard position knocking down a nothing but net three and at the laf, it was now a four point game 27-23.

Second Half

The second half became a big show between both teams as they shared the lead back and forth, with the Irish early on taking the lead by one while Rachel Fabry getting a nice fast break play in between three cardinal defenders and getting the nice layup as a reward and while Smith and Moorman would do more work inside the paint, Cara McNally hit an important three.  In the end however and with a 35-34 lead in the fourth, Mooney found their rhythm again and there was great full court pressure by players in senior Gia Divincenzo, Hough, Maddie Trimble, and the rest of the crew as after a few more buckets, the Irish were forced to foul with none to give.

Mooney would go into the Bonus shooting one and ones, with the Irish answering back with a layup on their own, but would have to foul again which put Mooney in the double bonus and eventually gave them the win, the Cardinals and coach Jason Baker getting their 10th win of the season, while coach Mike Kernan and the lady Irish fall to under .500 at seven and eight.

Ursuline Stats

For the lady Irish, it was once again the talented forwards playing at the five in Alayna Smith and Anisah Moorman as Smith scored 13 and Moorman put up 12, combining for 25 points, one of those being from behind the arc.  Cara McNally would finish with nine points, hitting a three in the third, Rachel Fabry would finish with five points and Lily Scott rounded up the crew with two.  Meredith Gray would come into the game playing solid defense later on.

Cardinal Mooney Stats

For Mooney, it was once again Katie Hough leading that pack with 19 points.  Angelina Rotunno would score seven on the night, making a three in the second quarter.  Gia Diorio had six points, and Gia Divincenzo had five.  Meanwhile, both Olivia Rouser and Alaina Scavina combined for eight points and Maria Fire finished with two points.  Maddie Trimble had a good defensive performance pressuring a few irish players.

Up Next:

Cardinal Mooney (10-6) as of now is a TBD.  For Ursuline (7-8) they are on a four game losing skid and will look to bounce back with a win against Chaney (2-10) at the Cowboys/girls gymnasium tomorrow at 5:30.

IRISH AVENGE LAST YEAR’S LOSS

YOUNGSTOWN, OH–

A rematch of last years regular season finale, the Ursuline Fighting Irish (12-5) played host to the Tigers of Massillon Washington (10-6). While the site had flipped, the quality of the game did not. The Tigers won last seasons game by just 3 points, and this year’s matchup also came down to the final seconds.

After 3 quarter off hard fought, up tempo, grueling basketball, Massillon took a 2-point lead into the final quarter. Scoring had come in bunches for both squads all night long. Each time one side would score, the other would respond with a basket of their own.

Trailing by 2 with under a minute to go, Ursuline applied a full court press to try and force a Massillon turnover. As the Tiger ball handler tried to push it across half court, Ursuline’s Will Burney picked his pocket, and laid one off the glass easily to knot the game at 45 all.

Keeping with the press that just tied the game for them, the Irish looked to force another turnover, or at apply some pressure as the Tigers tried to move the ball up the floor. Going for the steal again, Will Burney reached in and fouled Massillon’s Luke Sabo, sending him to the line for two shots.

Sabo would make the first but miss the second, giving Massillon the lead, 53-52. The ensuing Irish possession would result in a missed shot with just over 4 seconds remaining, then a loose ball foul with 0.8 seconds left on the clock.

With the Irish in the bonus, Ursuline’s JakylanIrving would head to the line for the one and one, and a chance to possibly win the game, but his first free throw would just barely rim out and a Massillon rebound would seal their victory, 53-52 over the Irish.

AT YOUR BECK AND CALL

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The rich tradition and high level of Ursuline Fighting Irish hoops has always been something that the Youngstown area looks forward to every single winter. The Ursuline program has seen its fair share of talent walk through the gym doors and the excitement never seems to stop! That excitement was in full swing last week in a game against East as the two storied Youngstown programs battled it out all night long. With just seconds remaining East took a one point lead but the Irish maintained composure and pushed the ball up the floor and as senior guard Tyler Beck spotted himself up on the wing, the pass hit his hands, and he released a shot as the buzzer sounded…. nothing but net, ball game! In that short moment, all the excitement and hard work that Tyler has put in to mastering his craft on the basketball court paid off and all his teammates celebrated a huge buzzer beater!

Tyler is currently in the middle of his senior basketball season and has been able to step into the role of team leader and has been able to become what some people call a “second coach” on the floor for Coach Gunther. Beck has been able to showcase his talents on the floor by always being consistent. He is the first one in the gym and the last to leave every day, he has established himself as one of the players that Coach Gunther looks to in tight games to rally the team and get them all on the same page, he has been able to take charge offensively whenever the Irish need points or a big stop on the defensive end, but not only on the court is Tyler able to lead, he is also able to lead in the classroom by proving what it means to be a student-athlete.

YSN’s own, Steve Leslie, was able to talk to Tyler this week via video chat to discuss the current season that the senior is having, what he wants out of the season for himself and for the Ursuline Fighting Irish, what his plans are for after high school, a rapid fire question session to find out more about what makes Tyler the player and person that he is, and much much more!

CHANEY HOLDS OFF IRISH COMEBACK

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Coming into this game, many thought that the Ursuline Irish were once again going to have a big night and continue this long winning streak as they just came off of one of the best games of the year with that buzzer against East.  However, they would have to get past the Chaney Cowboys who came in with a record of four and five, with a recent loss to Massilon Jackson 66-63 as coach Mcgaughy and his team were looking to go back to an even .500.

The first few minutes of the first quarter saw the Cowboys and the Irish play mostly defensive ball before chaney for the first points of the game.  Ursuline would answer back with points of their own, but they would then struggle with turning the ball over as Chaney took advantage and led big at the end of the first quarter 26-9.  The same could have been said then for the second quarter as senior forward Quincy Jones had six points, while senior guards Cameron Lawrence got four points in total.  Clive Wilson also had two in the second as the Cowboys were pulling off the upset and continuing the streak against the Irish, up 38-18 at the half.  In the games that both have played in basketball since 2018, the Irish have not won against the Cowboys, but were hoping to limit the turnovers and get their 10th win of the season and their first against Chaney.

In the second half, we saw the Irish team that we have been seeing all season long as the pressure started to come a bit and Ursuline was closing in thanks to six points by Terrance Pankey and Vince Flauto.  The lead was now 52-33 at the end of the third in what was a comfortable lead soon turned into a game.  Both teams were physical in the second half and the Irish were able to cut it down to five thanks to a technical foul.  However in the end, it was too little too late as the Cowboys were riding on a lead the whole time and came away with the 67-62 victory but lost one of their players late in senior Sharrod Taylor who left the game with a lower body injury.

Chaney Stats

Sharrod Taylor finished with seven field goals inside the paint, a three pointer, 5-8 on free throws and 22 points.  Cameron Lawrence finished with 17 points, five two’s, one three and went 4-6 on free throws.  Clive Wilson had three field goals inside the paint and finished with eight points.  Josiah Gonzalez finished with seven points, Quincy Jones had six, Davinci McDowell had three and Jason Hewlett had two.

Ursuline Stats

Terrance Pankey finished with 15 points, having seven made field goals inside the paint and had a free throw.  Vince Flauto made four three’s and was a perfect two for two on free throws, finishing with 14 points.  Brady Shannon had 11 points, making three field goals inside the paint while shooting five for six on free throws.  Jakylan Irving had eight points, DeMarcus McElroy had seven points, while Will Burney, Buzzer beater star Tyler Beck and Jaden Payne combined for seven points.

Up Next

Chaney (5-5) will face Cardinal Mooney (8-2) at home Friday Night at 7pm.  Ursuline (9-5) may have lost their winning streak but as of now, all records are off the tables as one of the best rivalries in NorthEast Ohio and the Mahoning County comes to town when the Irish take on the rival Cardinal Mooney Cardinals (8-2) at the Cafaro Gymnasium/Lyden Family Court Thursday at 7pm!
