WATERLOO SURGES PAST SPARTANS

SPRINGFIELD, OH- Waterloo outclassed Springfield (Spartans) with a solid 6-2 victory on Wednesday.

The action kicked off in the second inning when Austin Hurst singled and Trevor Simons grounded out, driving in a run each to put Waterloo on the board. They extended their lead in the third, with Drew Flarida making it 3-0 by hitting into a fielder’s choice.

Matthew Ralston was on point from the mound, delivering a shutout performance over five innings where he only allowed four hits and fanned six, walking away with the win. On the flip side, Springfield’s Jaden Bracken struggled through five and a third, giving up six runs (four earned) on eight hits and taking the loss. Aric May came on in relief for Waterloo, helping to close things out.

At the plate, Mason Sweitzer stepped up big time, batting ninth and knocking in two runs. Sam Russell, May, and Hurst each notched a pair of hits, showing that Waterloo’s lineup had depth and could pressure the defense from all spots. They also showed great discipline, working their way to seven walks with Kyle Werbeck, Flarida, and Hurst taking two apiece.

Waterloo was aggressive on the bases, swiping seven bags, highlighted by multiple steals from May and Landon McClain, adding an extra layer of threat to their game.

For Springfield, Brady Hahn was the standout, driving in both of the team’s runs and going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Waterloo is set to keep the momentum going when they host Ravenna on Thursday.
