18U: RICH GETS RICHER, DELL TOSSES NO-NO

STRUTHERS, OH- You could almost feel it coming.  Like the calm before the storm, Richie Dell calmly took his spot on the mound against Roth Brothers with his team battling for position atop the Class B.

Then, with a whip of his arm, and the violence of a lightning strike- Richie Dell struck out 11 batters on his way to a no-hitter 10-0 victory on Wednesday night.

Dell was the headline most certainly, but some of the focus should be on the offense that found ways to get on base and get things moving in the third inning.  Creekside is a team that pushes the envelope aggressively on the basepaths.  Look no further than the first hit of the game when BJ Arnold looped a ball into shallow centerfield that drew the shortstop, second baseman, and centerfielder to the baseball-leaving second base vacant for Arnold to occupy for a double.

From there, Dylan Gurski led the charge with 2 RBI and a triple for Creekside.

What started out as an incredible pitchers duel faded with Roth starter, Adam Wibert- who pitched his tail off striking out 4, walking 4, and scattering 5 hits.  Wibert had Creekside off balanced for the majority of his performance.  Ricky Mineo pitched in relief, striking out and walking a pair while giving up four runs.

Creekside, for the time being, have control with a 10-2 record, and the Astro Falcons are on pause until Friday night.

18U: CREEKSIDE TIES THINGS UP AT THE TOP WITH WIN OVER ‘STRO’S

STRUTHERS, OH- It was the second game of the day for both teams, and only one could remain perfect on the day.  The battle of the true heavyweights in the league took place, and behind an outstanding performance by Andrew Vance, Creekside was able to escape in extra innings with a 2-1 victory.  With the win, the Orange Crush were able to secure a tie at the top of the standings, each with a 9-2 record, respectfully.

Vance shined through 8 innings of work, walking a pair and striking out a pair while peppering 5 hits with only one run scoring.

Creekside’s offense scored one in the fourth on an error which was answered in the bottom of the frame by the Astro Falcons when Josh Hoffman scored on a passed ball.  The eventual winning run came in the top of the eighth inning when BJ Arnold hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Kyle Weitzel.

Mike Budde (pictured) led the way for Creekside at the dish, going 2-3 with a run scored.

For the Astro Falcons, Chase Franken inherited the loss after going 3 innings in relief.  Franken gave up four hits, and a run while walking a pair and striking out 3.

Josh Hoffman and Brayden Beck went 1-3 for the Astro’s.

18U: SMITH GOES THE DISTANCE IN ROTH VICTORY

STRUTHERS, OH- Mason Smith had things under control as he was able to throw a 4-hit shutout against the Whiting Roll-Offs (3-8) en route to a 3-0 victory on Saturday.

Smith led Roth Brothers (4-4) on the bump with a 7-inning complete game that included five walks and two strikeouts on 95 total pitches.  Leaning on his defense, Smith’s teammates committed no errors and Smith’s battery mate, Cam Whalen was able to keep the traffic close on the basepaths when he threw out Hunter Bates.

Offensively, Owen Sabol, Asher Patton, and Cam Whalen provided the lightning for Roth.  Each drove in runs respectively, while Brendon Hink went 2 for 3 at the plate.

Tim Lewis would collect the loss for Whiting, going 5 innings, scattering 4 hits, and giving up 3 runs.  Lewis also walked three while sitting down 5 Roth batters via the strikeout.

Mark Torsello and Hunter Bates each walked twice for Whiting.

18U: BELL SHINES AS ASTRO’S EXACT REVENGE ON KNIGHTLINE

STRUTHERS, OH- Astro Falcon Manager Don Pletcher didn’t need much of a speech to rally the Dirty Birds together for their game on Saturday.  All he had to do was point to their 10-7 loss on May 31 to Knightline(5-6), and hand the ball to one of the area’s top pitchers, Logan Bell.  The soon-to-be Akron Zip proved the rest, as he and his teammates flew past Knightline 12-1 to draw even in the season series and keep their nest atop the standings in the league.

Bell did more than hold up his end of the bargain going the distance in this abbreviated 5-inning game.  Bell scattered four hits, and walked a pair while striking out eight, and not allowing an earned run to cross the dish.

Offensively, Josh Hoffman and Burke Camper continued to impress, each driving in 3 runs. Camper also went yard in the contest Chase Franken and Dom Pilolli stayed hot at the top of the Astro lineup as they each contributed a pair of hits and runs scored with an RBI apiece.

Patrick Coleman suffered the loss giving up 6 runs (5 earned) in 2 innings of work.  Coleman struck out 2 while walking one while being hit 7 times.

Gabe Faunda went 1-2 for Knightline.

18U: MALAGESE LEADS DURA-EDGE PAST PROSPECTS

STRUTHERS, OH- Dura-Edge (6-6) evened up their record on Saturday when they were able to contain the Comeback Kids, 13-5.  Lately, the Prospects (8-4) have been making headlines for their late-inning heroics, but the combination of Brian Shevitz and Shane Swogger on the mound proved to be enough for Dura-Edge.

Shevitz would pick up the victory in relief going 2 innings, giving up a pair of runs on 4 hits, 4 walks, and striking out one.  Swogger walked one, and struck out six over four innings, scattering 3 hits along the way.

John Malagese would lead the offensive attack for the black and gold with 3 RBI.  Braden Olson would go 2-3 with a walk and had a single and double as well, while Malagese would go 1-2 with a pair of walks and a triple.  The Edgers also had three players with 2 RBI’s apiece, Dom Wade, Matt Senchak, and Andrew Sabella.

Brent Pitzer would suffer the loss appearing in just an inning and giving up 3 runs in the outing.  Johnnie Mikos and Cam Kreps would also appear on the mound, combining for nine walks and 5 strikeouts giving up 9 runs.

Nick Guarnieri would lead the Bucco offense with a pair of doubles, and 2 RBI.

18U: CREEKSIDE CONTINUES TO ROLL, LEAP OVER AVALANCHE

STRUTHERS, OH- Creekside Fitness is putting the rest of Class B on notice lately, as they chugged past another foe on Saturday 7-3.  The latest victim was the Avalanche who sent Zach Rhodanz to the bump to face off against the red-hot hitters of Creekside.

Rhodanz gave up 5 earned runs, 6 walks while sitting down 4 in his showing. Carmen Cavalier and Joel Kreuzwieser appeared in relief where Kreuzwieser gave up only a hit while striking out a pair.

For Creekside, Dylan Gursky had two hits including a double, an RBI and scored once while Kyle Weitzel had two hits including a home run, three RBIs and scored twice for Creekside. Cameron Kern pitched in the victory, only giving up one hit and no earned runs while striking out nine.

Damian Airwyke had two hits including a triple and scored once for Avalanche.

18U- RUSSELL TOSSES ONE-HITTER, FALCONS FLY OVER DURA EDGE

STRUTHERS, OH- Andrew Russell continues to shine this season in Class B, but that’s no surprise if you follow this young man for any length of time.  Russell took the mound on Friday and was outstanding allowing only a single hit in four innings of work against Dura Edge in a 10-0 victory.

Russell struck out 5 batters in 4 innings of work on Friday.

The offense was sparked early with runs in each of the first four innings.  The Astro Falcons (8-1) scored three runs in all but the second inning where they had a single tally.  Leading the way was Bryce Warwick with a 2-3 night, driving in three runners.  Kevin Vaupel accounted for a pair of runs personally, and also drove in a pair.  Russell also drove in a run to help his own cause.  Chase Franken and Vince Armeni each had 2 stolen bases on the night.

Braden Olson (0-1) took the loss for Dura Edge (4-6) giving up 3 hits and 7 runs in two innings.  Olson also struck out five and walked three.  Jarett Wright pitched in relief and gave up 3 runs (1 earned) on a pair of hits while walking four over two innings.

Matt Senchak had the lone hit for Dura Edge.

18U: PROSPECTS RALLY AGAIN TO CRASH AVALANCHE

STRUTHERS, OH- This is becoming a pattern.  The Prospects trailed early to the Avalanche on Friday, only to rally back in the late innings to walk away with a 3-2 win.

The Prospects (8-3) solidified their second place positioning on Friday when the bats opened up in the fifth inning trailing 1-0.  The Buccos scored a run in the fifth, and two in the sixth to lock up the victory and raise the flag on their latest come from behind win.

For the Prospects, Nick Guarnieri led the way with a pair of hits including a triple, a stolen base, and an RBI.  Ian Lu also contributed a single and a double and plated one.

For the Avalanche, Trey Giannini took the loss in five innings of work.  He gave up 3 runs on 7 hits while striking out four.
