LOUISVILLE LEOPARDS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER: (EP 1.) TOM SIEGFRIED

LOUISVILLE, OH- The Leopards boys’ basketball program is coming off an unbelievable run last season after winning the district final over Howland 63-56. The Leopards kept tournament hopes alive beating Glenville in a shootout 90-86 to advance to the regional final. The Leopards memorable season would end in the regional final, dropping the game to division two state champions, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary.

The Leopards return a lot of talent from last years regional final team, including there two top scorers. Will Aljancic was the leading scorer as a junior last season averaging 21 points per game, along with 69 three pointers made and 31 steals defensively. Also coming back is junior shooting guard Hayden Nigro. He averaged 17 points per game as a sophomore, while also shooting 51 percent from the field. SALEM GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH SARAH HAMILTON

SALEM OH- The time has come once again to get excited about high school basketball.  Salem is coming off of one of their best seasons in program history so there are plenty of reasons to get excited for Quaker fans. Last season the Quakers finished the year with a record of 20-5 (10-2). They went all the way to the Regional Final before falling short against Norton. Although they graduated 5 seniors, the Quakers have a lot of pieces to work with that should keep them one of the best girls programs in the area.

Head coach Sarah Hamilton is back for another year at the helm of the Quakers. She was kind enough to take her time and talk to YSN’s Ty Bartell to help preview the season.  She talks about the ride last year was, how this team will separate themselves from last season’s, and so much more. NEWTON FALLS BOYS BASKETBALL COACH’S: (EP 1.) WITH ROY SEMBACH

NEWTON FALLS, OH- The Tigers boys basketball team has a lot coming back from a year ago. Newton Falls brought back three starters from a season ago including: point guard Mac Haidet, shooting guard Alex Pennington and post player Jake Kline. The Tigers also ave letter winners coming back from last season including: Dom Greathouse, Carmelo Moore and Dylan Mcgregor.

Head Coach Roy Sembach sat down with Ty Bartell to preview the 2022-2023 Newton Falls boys basketball season. Coach Sembach emphasizes defense as the teams priority, along with execution on the court with the size and experience coming back this season. EAST BOYS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER: (EP 1.) WITH CHIVAS WHIPPLE

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The East Golden Bears have a lot to look forward to on the hardwood in 2022-2023. The Golden Bears return a ton of varsity basketball players from a year ago. The Golden Bears bring back sophomore point guard Jared Colon. As a freshman, Colon started every game and averaged just under 14 points per game. Other sophomores to look for are Michael Brogdon, Arjay Pierce, Jamari Crum and Michael Franklin jr. All of these guys got valuable varsity minutes last season for the Golden Bears.

East boys basketball Head coach Chivas Whipple sat down with Ty Bartell to preview the 2022-2023 East Golden Bears roster and expectations. Whipple likes the young talent coming back, along with some transfers including Isaiah McCray and Cam’eron Sly. HEARTLAND CHRISTIAN BOYS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER: (EP 1) WITH JOSH SCOTT

COLUMBIANA, OH- The Heartland Christian boys basketball team will have to reload some talent after losing the top three scorers from a season ago. Jonathan Bertovich was a standout athlete on the hardwood for the Lions, leading the team scoring close to 25 points per game. The Lions also lose Sam Osborn and Nate Garzanich who scored over 6 points per game last year. Heartland Christian looks to build off of a 19 win season from last year, while making it to the district semifinal before falling in a close one to Lowellville.

Head Coach Josh Scott joined Ty Bartell to discuss the upcoming Heartland Christian boys basketball campaign. He talks about the great numbers coming back to the program, along with the importance of defense now that they lose the scorers and size from last years team. AUSTINTOWN FITCH GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH NATALIE LYNN

AUSTINTOWN OH- It’s a new era of basketball in Austintown. While searching for a new coach, the Falcons girls program turned to a familiar face. They found their coach in former Falcon Natalie Lynn. It’s always a bonus having an alumnus be a coach. No one will take more care of the program’s success than someone who has played in it.  Coach Lynn has plenty of tools in her new tool chest this season to work with. The Falcons return a ton of talent to the floor, and with the rest of the AAC graduating some of their key pieces, Fitch looks to make some waves in the conference. Last season Fitch ended the year at 14-9 (4-4). The Falcons open their new campaign on November 11 at home against Ashtabula Lakeside.

New coach Natalie Lynn took the time to do an interview with YSN’s Ty Bartell and Anthony Hartwig to give us a great preview of the season.  They talk about what it’s like to come back home, how much the experience of last season will be a factor, and so much more. COLUMBIANA BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH TODD JOHNSON

COLUMBIANA OH- It is the time all basketball fans have waited for. The start of the season is just about here. We continue our basketball previews with a trip to Columbiana to check in on their boys program.  The Clippers play in a very competitive EOAC. Lots of teams have hopes of ending the year at the top. The Clippers hope to be in the mix as well, like they have so many times in the past.  Last year they finished 10-4 in the conference, and 11-12 overall.  With plenty of games that they feel they could have won, Columbiana has high hopes.  This season the Clippers open their campaign on November 25 on the road at Mineral Ridge.

Head coach Todd Johnson returns to the helm of the team this season. He was kind enough to give us a solid preview of the season by chatting with Ty Bartell. COLUMBIANA GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH DAVE CRISMON

COLUMBIANA OH- Winter is coming. You can feel it in the air, as the leaves continue to fall. Basketball is fastly approaching with the winter season. Columbiana has a girls program that you won’t want to miss this year. The amount of young talent the Clippers are about to put on the floor is reason to show up.  The Clippers have a lot of straight up athletes.  Last season the Clippers finished the year at 15-7 (11-2). They were serious contenders in the EOAC, and there’s no reason to think they won’t be again.  That campaign to a conference crown will start on November 28th against Lowellville.

Clippers head coach Dave Crismon took the time to come on to Running Point with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig, and Scotty Mincher.  They talk about what the outlook of the season should be, who he is going to lean on to be a leader in the season, and much more. URSULINE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 12) WITH DAN REARDON

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- It wasn’t pretty, but a second half onslaught helped catapult Ursuline into the Division 3 Region 9 semifinals. The Irish fell behind Tallmadge 14-0 early in the second quarter, but 38 unanswered points by Ursuline was more than enough for the Irish to pull away from the Blue Devils. Ursuline will face off with another valley power this week, the Canfield Cardinals. Canfield and their star quarterback Broc Lowry defeated Aurora 42-14 a week ago in a dominating performance.

WEST BRANCH GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH WALT DESHIELDS

BELOIT OH- West Branch girls basketball is one of the few teams in the YSN family that can say they’ve had multiple appearances in state over the last decade. Their most recent coming in 2020.  Although last season, they didn’t quite reach that goal, you can always see the Warriors as a threat to go that far. Last season West Branch finished with a record of 21-6 (9-3). They won a district championship before falling in the regional semifinals. They return a lot of pieces from a season ago, and have added some new weapons. You can always count on West Branch to be a contender. The season will top off for them on November 18 at home against Canton South.

Head coach Walt DeShields is back at it for the green machine.  He graciously took the time to conduct an interview with YSN’s Ty Bartell to give us a solid preview of the upcoming campaign.
