COLUMBIANA, OH- As the fate of the spring sports season in Ohio looms in the balance, coaching staffs across the country are yearning for America’s favorite past-time. There may be no more eager team than the Columbiana Clippers as they were preparing to live up to their billing as the “Team to Beat” in the EOAC.

SOUTH RANGE SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EPISODE 1) WITH JEFF DEROSE

CANFIELD OH- The South Range softball program was back on an upswing last season winning the district championship after two straight seasons of not making it to the title game. The win made it seem like the program was back to its former glory, being its 6th title in 10 years. COVID-19 has put a damper on the program’s momentum this spring, however, as now the season’s fate is up in the air. The Raiders join every program in the state in juggling ways to respond to the current situation. Coach Jeff DeRose has tons of experience at the helm, and there are not too many people more qualified to steady the Raiders ship through this storm.

COLUMBIANA, OH- With the talent that Crestview keeps pumping out on the playing fields and track, the COVID-19 has sure been a tough pill to swallow. They say that momentum is everything in sports, and Crestview has seemingly controlled the momentum for the last few years on the track and in the field.

This year was supposed to be no different, as the Rebels were prepped to perhaps have their best showing yet in 2020. We sat down with the Boys Track and Field Coach, Greg Woolman to discuss the potential of what could be (or what could have been) this spring.

LAKEVIEW SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH NATE SCHICK

CORTLAND, OH- The foundation is strong for Lakeview in 2020, as the Lady Bulldogs will line up with a young, but talented lineup this season.  It’s been a long time coming for Lakeview to try to return to the top of the mountain, but second-year coach, Nate Schick feels he has the pieces to compete in an uber-competitive conference.

We sat down to talk to Coach Schick to discuss the situation at hand with the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as what his favorite parts of coaching in today’s culture.

URSULINE BASEBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MATT WEYMER

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- It’s an era of uncertainty for all in the state of Ohio, as speculation is running wild with rumors on both sides whether spring sports will happen in 2020.  Amidst that speculation, coaches must prepare in the shadows of this news, and be prepared at the drop of a hat to pick up activities and have their program in the best situation possible.

In the case of the 2020 Ursuline Baseball Team, Manager Matt Weymer has circled this season on the calendar.  Going into his presumed 5th season at the helm of the Irish, Weymer has his team primed on defense with the bats to spark the offense in the Division II level.

We sat down with Coach Weymer to discuss his team, as well as the unknown factor of where things are heading into the 2020 season for the Green and Gold.

SOUTH RANGE GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EPISODE 14 WITH JEFF FISHEL)

History has been made at South Range. For the first time, a Raider basketball team is playing in the regional final. After dominating Champion in the regional semis the Lady Raiders prepare for maybe their biggest challenge yet. The AP 4th ranked team in the state, Elyria Catholic. The Lady Raiders find themselves a breath away from a state tournament appearance. South Range would have its fourth different team at that level since 2015. Everyone feels good about making history, but the message the next couple of days from Coach Fishel is “don’t stop.”

Anthony Hartwig made sure to catch Coach Fishel before their big game against Elyria Catholic on Saturday. They discuss making history, the ripple effects it can happen on the program’s future, and much more. SOUTH RANGE GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EPISODE 13 WITH JEFF FISHEL)

The Raiders are district champions yet again. This marks the program’s fourth title in seven seasons. However, no Raider basketball team boys or girls has made it past the regional semifinal. Jeff Fishel thinks this team has a good chance to make history. Standing in their way is Champion. Known for their dominant softball program, Champion flies a little under the radar in Girls Basketball. Make no mistake though the Golden Flashes are a worthy opponent. Coach Fishel describes them as a hybrid of South Range and Poland, which sounds terrifying for opponents.

POLAND GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EPISODE 12 WITH NICK BLANCH)

The train keeps rolling in Poland as the Lady Bulldogs advance in the tournament. After a hard fought win against a familiar Struthers team, Poland now turns their attention to Southeast. The Pirates are a newcomer to the Fitch district, but not to success. They are the reigning division 3 Struthers district champions. Now moved up a Division, they have plenty to prove. A tough task is in front of the Dogs with a trip to the championship on the line.

Anthony Hartwig got to catch with Coach Blanch this week before their semifinal match up against Southeast. It’s finally tournament time in South Range. The Lady Raiders had played only one game in the last sixteen days, but it didn’t matter as they looked fresh as ever against East Palestine. They dispatched the Bulldogs and moved on to play Columbiana in the district semifinals. This is the round the Raiders bowed out in last year’s tournament, and everyone remembers it fondly. Hungrier than ever the Raiders prepare for their next test.

POLAND GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EPISODE 11 WITH NICK BLANCH)

It’s officially tournament time in Poland. The Bulldogs finished the regular season with a decisive win over rival Canfield. Now their sights are set to their first tournament game against Struthers. It will mark the third meeting between the two schools. Poland won the first two, but they are not taking the Wildcats lightly.
