WARRIORS PLACE THIRD AT BOB MACLAREN INVITATIONAL

BELOIT OH- The West Branch boys golf team placed 3rd in the Bob MacLaren invitational Monday with a team score of 358.

Individual scores were Landon Wilson 86, Christian Starcher 89, Westley Daley 90, and Jaxon Robb 93. They will be right back to the links Wednesday morning at the Alliance Country Club early bird tournament.

RAMS DRIVE HOME WIN OVER LOWELLVILLE

LOWELLVULLE OH- Mineral Ridge took a big win on Monday over Lowellville 190-202. The Rams rebounded from dropping their invitational to McDonald on Thursday. They travel to the Brookfield invitational on Wednesday at Yankee Run Golf Course.

PORTER AND MCDONALD SHINE IN MINERAL RIDGE INVITATIONAL

MINERAL RIDGE OH- Michael Porter and McDonald took the top spots in the individual and team scored at the Mineral Ridge invitational. Porter shot a 69, while the team finished with a mark of 335.

POTTERS OPEN SEASON WITH A WIN

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- The East Liverpool golf team teed off their season with a win over Oak Glen, and BROOKE. The final scores from today’s match were:

1st East Liverpool – 179
2nd Oak Glen – 198
3rd Brooke – 210

Nathan Kelly and Brad Chaney from Oak Glen were co-medalist with a score of 40.

Next match will be Thursday (August 5th) at the Beaver Creek Meadows in a tri-match against Beaver Local and Oak Glen.

GREATEST GOLFER: LOCAL STANDOUTS SHINE ON FRIDAY

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Valley’s best teen golfers are dialing in their games for next week’s ‘Joe’ Dickey Electric Greatest Golfer Championship, and Friday at the Olde Dutch Mill qualifier was a great shootout.

Struthers’ Chaz Ekoniak and Boardman’s Ryan Sam posted 71s to lead u17 Boys Joseph Nohra Insurance Division.

It was Ekoniak’s third round in the 70s this season, and Sam’s second.

East Liverpool’s Nathan Kelly posted a 75 to win the finals qualifier spot. Ekoniak and Sam qualified earlier this season.

More than 50 players teed off Friday — the 9th qualifier of the ‘Joe’ Dickey series. Tuesday is the final qualifier before the championship series launches Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

In u17 Girls Magnolias on the Green Division, Boardman’s Zoey Fick -Mills scored an 80 to become the 9th u17 Girls player to clinch a championship spot.

She was trailed by Ursuline’s Daniella Patrone, who shot 85, and Canfield’s Jackie Kinnick, who shot 86.

In Boys u14 Kreps Drywall Division play, it was another Fick-Mills — Carter — who shot 92 to clinch his spot in the finals.

Two other u14 players — Hubbard’s CJ Brew, 87, and Canfield’s Ray McCune, 88, led the way in the division. They clinched spots earlier this season.

In u14 Girls Ambrose Family Eye Care Division play, Southeast High’s Gracie Westover made her Greatest debut on her home course and scored a 93 to earn a finals spot. She was followed by classmate Taylor Blazek, 96, and Canfield’s Miya Cohol, 104.

‘Joe’ Dickey Greatest Golfer is a part of the Greatest Golfer championship golf series for amateurs ages 12 to 80. The Dickey series is 10 events for boys and girls in ages 15-17 and 12-14 from May to July at some of the Youngstown area’s top family-owned courses. The top performers play in the championship July 23-24 at Avalon Lakes.

SWAN, HILLER LEAD IN AJGA EVENT AT MILL CREEK

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- Anna Swan of North East, Pennsylvania, leads the Girls Division at 1-over-par 141 after 36 holes. She was one of just two girls in the field to shoot par in either round. Swan, a 2024 grad, carded three birdies on the day, all in the first round of the Mahoning Valley Hospital Junior All-Star Tournament

Zoe Wynn of Irvine, California, trails Swan in second at 3-over-par 143. In a four-way tie for third at 4-over-par 144 are Sawyer Brockstedt of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware; Michelle Ho of San Ramon, California; Lanzhi (Victoria) Wang of (Hong Kong) Laguna Niguel, California, and Allyson Duan of Buffalo Grove, Illinois.

Over in the Boys Division, John Hiller of New York, New York, tops the field at 2-under-par 138. He was the only junior to shoot under par in each round. Hiller, also a 2024 grad, birdied the par-5 No. 14 on both occasions.

Hot on Hiller’s tail is Michael Lee of Fairfax, Virginia, at 1-under-par 139.

Tied for third at 1-over-par 141 are Emil Nielsen of Wellesley, Massachusetts, and Eric Zhao of (Canada) North York, Ontario, Canada.

Winston Shen of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, Jack Chung of Greenwich, Connecticut, and Vibhav Alokam of Ypsilanti, Michigan, are T5 at 2-over-par 142.

SHERRY SIGNS WITH WEST LIBERTY FOR GOLF

EAST PALESTINE, OH- East Palestine Senior Payton Sherry has officially signed with the West Liberty University girls golf program as a scholarship athlete.

Sherry is a four-year letter winner for the Bulldogs in both girls golf & basketball, helping lead them to two consecutive appearances in the district golf tournament. She was also the starting point guard on the girls’ basketball team that won the EOAC and sectional championships this year. 

HUTTON TO KEEP PLAYING AT YSU

SALEM, OH- The Salem Quakers held a press conference Thursday announcing that standout golfer, Kelly Hutton will be continuing her career as a Youngstown State Penguin.

COLUMBIANA, OH- The Heartland Christian Golf Team took on Leetonia and were successful in their quest for a victory on the links.

The Lions shot 220 to Leetonia’s 235.

The Bears recorded scores included Ben Shasteen’s 55, while Johnathon Simpson, Tucker Stark, and Grant Mertzweiller all shot 60.
