WARRIORS SEE SEASON END AGAINST STREETSBORO

BELOIT OH- The Warriors soccer team (9-7-1) fell to Streetsboro (8-9-1) by a 2-0 score at West Branch High School on a brisk and chilly night in an OHSAA Sectional Tournament game on Monday.

The Rockets got on the board in the 31st minute with a goal and took a 1-0 halftime lead.  The Warriors were pressed for most of the game, but held strong.  The back breaking goal came just 13 seconds into the second half when the Rockets were able to get their second goal and effectively put the game away.

Streetsboro peppered Warrior goalie Will Weingart with shots all night but Weingart was up to the task stopping 14 of them and keeping his squad in the game.  Unfortunately, the Warriors didn’t have quite enough offensively and were unable to put mount much of an attack on the Rockets end.

The season comes to an end, but it was a season that saw a lot of growth with only one senior on the squad.  The team finished the year winning seven of its last nine games including a six game winning streak.

TOPORCER IS A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH

CANFIELD OH- Canfield girls soccer has been one of the most successful programs in the area. They’ve won 11 straight AAC championships coming in to this season. They clinched a share of their 12th earlier this season. Their recent success comes with incredible talent. One of their biggest weapons in junior Maci Toporcer.  Maci is a huge talent. She is a tremendous asset to this Cardinal team that has continued to leave most of their opponents in the dust. She drives herself to be better every day. Being this good at anything doesn’t happen over night. Maci has taken the time and effort it takes to get to where she is at. And she isn’t close to slowing down. After she is done at Canfield, Maci already has a home at the next level.  Toporcer is committed to play in the Horizon League at Purdue Fort Wayne.

Toporcer has led Canfield to a record of 12-2-1 and 7-1 in the AAC.  The Cardinals have had big matchups with Kenston, Mooney, Ursuline, and Poland to name a few. They have won all of those matchups except for Kenston, who they tied 1-1.  In all of those games Maci has been a huge cog in what the Cardinals do well  She is one of the best players in the area, and someone that any soccer fan has ton and a point to go and see.

Maci was gracious enough to take some time to talk with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about her Cardinals career. They talk about committing to Purdue Fort Wayne before her senior season, what made that decision so easy for her, and much more. HOWLAND CLINCHES A PIECE OF THE AAC

BOARDMAN OH- After their big 2-1 win over Canfield on Monday, Howland was one win away from earning a piece of the AAC title. The opponent standing in their way was Boardman. The Spartans gave quite a fight, but eventually the Tigers came away with a 2-0 win.

Ava Yanucci scored both of the goals for Howland.  Both goals were assisted. Riley Villwock picked up one, and so did Madelyn Monroe.  The Tiger defense kept Howland goalie Taylor Fairchild clean. She didn’t need to save any shots on goal.

The Tigers end the regular season with a record of 12-4-1 overall and 7-1 in the conference.  They have a share of the AAC Championship with Canfield.

MCGAVIN GIVES HIS ALL FOR BOARDMAN

BOARDMAN OH- Ian McGavin is the definition of a Spartan in Boardman. He has dove in to the community and school system in ways that go way beyond being a standout on the soccer field. He is a part of as many clubs and extracurricular activities as he can fit into his schedule. He believes in giving back to the school system that was so welcoming when he joined it his freshman season.  That is going to be an attribute that college coaches will love when looking into him as a soccer player. Coaches love a player that will get involved with the campus and emerge themselves into the college community. There’s no doubt Ian will do just that wherever he lands.

Boardman is sitting at 8-5-1 on the season. They’ve definitely been able to navigate a tough schedule and earn a solid record. They haven’t let a loss or two turn in to even more by putting their heads down. McGavin’s strong positive influence is a big reason for that. He is always there to lift his teammates up in times when they could be down.  He’ll be big in Boardman’s final game of the season against Howland, and even bigger when the Spartans start their tournament run against Brush.

Ian took the time this week to sit down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to discuss his senior year.  He talks about his leadership qualities, being a part of the Boardman community, and so much more. Don’t miss a second of the latest Boardman Soccer Player Profile only on YSN!

NOVAK NETS IN SUCCESS

COLUMBIANA OH- It’s been an exciting time in Crestview for the soccer program.  The Rebels are fresh off their best season in program history where they stormed their way to a state championship appearance. They won their fourth straight MVAC championship, and their second program district championship. Their senior class in 2022 accomplished a ton, but as is the case for everyone they had to graduate and say goodbye to the program. The big question this season was of course could the new senior class shape success the way they did the season before. Nick Novak has answered that with an emphatic yes. Novak has become one of the best players in the area. He’s staring down the barrel of a season that will feature a lot of postseason awards. Those accolades are part of the personal goals Nick has set for himself this season, and he well on his way.

In 14 games with stats recorded, Novak has netted 29 goals. If you do the math that is over 2 per match.  He is incredibly hard to stop, and he makes his teammates better as well. With 22 assists on the year Novak has his hands in a total of 51 goals.  To put that number in perspective, Crestview has scored 69 goals as a team. That’s 74% of the team goals to be responsible for in some way.  You can tell why he’s is the conversation for Division III player of the year.

Novak took the time to talk with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig this week to talk about his senior year.  They discuss the standard at Crestview, all the success the athletic department of the school has had, and much more. Check out the latest Crestview soccer Player Profile only on YSN!
