CARDS AND EAGLES BATTLE TO A DRAW

CANFIELD OH- It was a perfect night on Wednesday for soccer in Canfield. A premiere matchup between JFK and Canfield boys soccer headlined the night as both squads have high hopes of a successful season.  This early season test was one both teams were looking forward to. The two titans battled all night, but couldn’t separate themselves from each other. The entertaining game ended in a 2-2 tie.

For Canfield they had a pair of contributions to their offense.  Drew Snyder, and Ethan Mulichak both found the back of the net.  They also were both credited with the assist on the others’ goal.  Luke Rupeka got JFK on the board first, and then in the second half JFK got a goal from Will Davis.  Nico Ciminero made a bunch of nice saves to keep the Eagles in the match.

Canfield will move on to rivalry night against Poland on Tuesday on the road.  JFK will be on the road next as well as they travel to Brookfield on Monday.

LADY REBELS RUN RAMPANT IN THE RAIN

* CONTRIBUTED BY NATE DICROSS

The Rebels and the Potters welcomed the start of 2023 girls soccer Monday night as East Liverpool played host to the visiting Crestview squad. The party got kicked off right on time with a killer rendition of the national anthem and then they were underway. Mother nature brought enough rain for both teams, which set the stage for. opening night. The Lady Rebels made sure not to show up empty handed, bringing all the goals for the night.

Karagin Miller opened scoring early for Crestview with a goal in the 3 rd minute of play. Potter Nation was unfazed by the early goal and the girls regrouped valiantly, slowing the Rebel attack for quite some time, but the senior leadership and experience of Crestview proved to be too much. Goals by Sydney Wellman, Bailey Wonner and Rylee Shaffer were enough to put Crestview firmly in control through the first half of play. The Potters found themselves with some opportunities during the first half, with a couple runs past the Rebel back line and some balls that bounced around in the box long enough to keep both fan bases on their toes, but key saves by Lexi Huff. and great combined effort by the defense helped keep the sheet clean at the half.

The rain would let up by the start of the 2 nd half but the Rebel attack did not. Seniors Karagin Miller and Rylee Shaffer both found the back of the net from distance. Rylee placing a great ball in the top corner from somewhere near the 18 and Karagin taking advantage of space she found from what seemed like the Newell bridge and driving another home for the Rebels. At one point, Crestview strikers seemed to be racing to a hat trick, with Senior captains Rylee, Karagin, and Bailey – plus sophomore Syd Wellman all sitting at 2 goals. It was Miller who was able to capitalize for a 3rd goal, as she would lead both teams in scoring on the night. Finally, freshman Bri DiCross was determined to get the 2027 class in on the scoring and slipped one past the keeper for her 1st varsity goal. Crestview will take a week off before kicking off MVAC league play against Springfield in their home opener next Wednesday. The Potters will look to regroup and grab their first win against Oak Glen on Thursday.

Scoring: Karagin Miller (3), Bailey Wonner (2), Rylee Shaffer (2), Sydney Wellman (2), Bri DiCross (1)

TIGERS RIGHT BACK WHERE THEY BELONG

TWINSBURG OH- Howland boys soccer being in the state tournament has become second nature to area soccer fans. Coming in to this season, the Tigers had been to two of the last three final fours.  Standing in their way of making it three of the last four was CVCA. It was a battle, CVCA is a solid program, but the Tigers pulled out the victory 2-1.

For the Tigers offense it was Jak Kenney that did the damage.  He scored both of the Tigers goals to seal their victory.  The win for Howland took them to 19-1-2 on the season and they will advance to their third state semifinal appearance in four seasons.  The Tigers opponent will be Shawnee who beat Revere 3-2 in their regional championship.  That game will take place Wednesday at 7:00 at Clear Fork in Bellville.

MOONEY MAKES THEIR RETURN TO STATE

WARREN OH- Mooney came in to Saturdays Regional Final looking to get back to the state tournament. After punching a ticket in 2020, the Cardinals had a disappointing overtime loss to Crestview last season to end their year. Almost immediately, Mooney got hungry to get right back. They brought back just about everyone that made big contributions in their run. Throughout the year, Mooney faced every challenge their schedule had to face with precision and focus. That is how they handled this matchup with Beachwood, and that’s why they came away with a 2-0 victory.

The first half both teams were feeling each other out. Both programs feature excellent defense, and they proved it. There were only 5 combined shots on goal in the first half. Beachwood had 3, Mooney had 2.  As the wind gusted in the second half, Mooney took advantage of going with it.  They scored two goals in two minutes in a quick strike. The first one came from Angel Alvarez in the 51st minute, then just a minute later Mason Janis netted the Cardinals second goal.

Mooney advances to their second state semifinal in three seasons. They’ll square off with Ottawa Hills on Wednesday at 7:00. That game will take place at Sandusky Perkins High School, the host of Ottawa Hills win over United in the regional semifinals.

CVCA has scored 85 goals in 24 matches played this season, while allowing just 12 total goals on defense all season long. Good luck to the Tigers on there opportunity to advance to state.

PREGIBON’S HAT TRICK ADVANCES MOONEY

BOARDMAN OH- Cardinal Mooney didn’t miss a beat on Wednesday night in their regional semifinal matchup. After dropping out of the tournament earlier than expected last season, the Cardinals have been hungry to prove what they can do this season. Their opponent Wickliffe couldn’t keep up in a 4-0 Mooney victory.

Junior Nick Pregibon was a force to be reckoned with.  His first goal came about half way through the first half. Once the first goal was scored, any nerves that Mooney had washed away.  They stayed on the attack the rest of the game. Even though Wickliffe withstood the storm for a while, with 15 minutes left in the second half, Mooney blasted three goals.  Pregibon scored two more, and Mason Janis added one in the final seconds.

With the win Mooney has advanced to the regional championship.  They’ll square up with Beachwood on Saturday at 4:00 at Howland High School.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF IN CANFIELD WEST BRANCH MATCHUP

BOARDMAN OH- Canfield and West Branch are all too familiar with each other, especially cod tournament time. Canfield has been haunting the Warriors for three years in tournament action. In 2019, the Cardinals knocked out West Branch 2-0 in a District Championship, last season Canfield won in the sectional final on penalty kicks.  This year was the biggest stage yet for the showdown in the regional semifinals. History repeat itself as Canfield once again won the match in the penalty kick round.

By the time regulation was finished it was tied 1-1. Overtime didn’t solve the issue, neither team could punch through.   Canfield then defeated West Branch 6-5 on penalty kicks to survive the thriller and improve to 17-2-1.  Canfield’s lone goal was scored by Maci Toporcer.  Canfield Outshot West Branch 24-14 on the night putting a lot of pressure on their defense. Canfield goalie Lolo Padget had 9 saves in the net.  The Warriors only goal of the night was scored by Daphne Snyder. It put the Warriors on top to start the game.

Canfield moves on to the regional championship on Saturday. They will be heading up against Bay Village Bay at 11:00 at Twinsburg High School.  West Branch finishes the year with just 1 loss, and their program’s first District Championship.

POLAND ONE STEP AWAY FROM THE STATE BRACKET

The previous two meaning carried the fate of the league, but even more was at stake this time around.  The winner of this game would be one step closer to the coveted state championship trophy.  Poland who had beaten Lakeview by a combined 18-0 in the last 4 meetings continued their dominance of their conference rival with a 4-0 victory.

Ariel Grischow had a tremendous day for Poland. Her pair of goals led the team in scoring.  Kailyn Assion notched a goal as well.  Those two came in with a combined 7 goals on the entire season. Freshman standout Elliana Thompson scored a goal as well.

DANIELS SCORES BY THE DOZEN

POLAND OH- Ariana Daniels has been a key cog in this extremely successful Poland girls soccer team over the years. However until this season, her main job wasn’t to score but rather defend. After a big chunk of the Bulldogs offense graduated in the class of 2022, coach Huda saw an opportunity to use Daniels athleticism to help build offense. Did that decision ever pay off for Poland. In her first season as a striker, Daniels broke the program record for goals in a season.  That output helped Poland earn their way to a district championship.

In her 20 games played this season, Daniels has scored 26 goals. That mark was by far good enough to claim the team lead.  With 4 assists as well Daniels had her hands in 30 goals this season.  Daniels has played for 1257 minutes this soccer season.

Daniels has made her decision on her home after high school. The Bulldogs standout has committed to play at the next level at Slippery Rock.  The atmosphere of the program made the decision east for Ariana. Poland will play in the Regional Semifinals on Tuesday against Lakeview.  That game is set to be played in Ravenna at 5:00.  Poland has beaten Lakeview twice this season in conference play.
