RED DEVILS LOCK DOWN REVENGE ON LABRAE

By Ty Bartell

CAMPBELL OH- In the final two weeks of the high school season, many volleyball teams are wrapping up
their conference play and a good amount are facing common opponents for the second time. Looking at the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference’s (MVAC) Grey Division, there has been plenty of parity amongst the teams below The Crestview Rebels. These teams include The LaBrae Vikings and The Campbell-Memorial Red Devils who met for their second match of the season on Thursday night. With both teams taking the full five sets to determine a winner in their first meeting at Leavittsburg, The Vikings emerged victorious in comeback fashion 3-2. Two great coaching staffs on both sides with Coach Kish leading LaBrae and Coach Allen with The Red Devils, setting up all the right ingredients for another fun match!
Wasting little time, both teams duked it out in a momentum-swinging war to start set one.

Both teams held the lead and struggled to hold it once having it. Campbell would get enough key plays down the stretch to sneak away with the 25-23 opening set win. The Vikings understood the assignment in set two, realizing that falling behind two sets on the road to The Red Devils was not going to be favorable. LaBrae ensured a set win by grabbing the initial lead off an early rally and riding that advantage all the way to a 25-17 set two win. With both teams even at a set, Campbell came out hungry in set three. Doing all the little things right, The Red Devils recaptured a set lead with a convincing 25-14 victory in set three. With The Vikings backs against the wall, Memorial had a chance to take the match in set four. Despite showing great resiliency and battle throughout the match, LaBrae could not force a set five, falling to The Red Devils 25-18, giving Campbell their revenge and a season split!

Kendall Brunn led Campbell in both kids with 19 and blocks with 4 in the match. Angelina Diaz had the double-double performance with 10 kills and 11 digs. MiLeena Williams also recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs. Elysia Rudolphi made great work with her time on the court, notching 5 kills in the win. The most impressive stat lines of the night came in a pair of program record breakers! Cyra Cross had a defensive performance for the ages, breaking the single match record in digs with 36! 2K, Carla Ramirez-Ortiz added her name to another assists record in Campbell history, as the all-time assists queen is the single match assists queen, recording an outstanding 49 in the win!

Following the win, Campbell-Memorial (15-5)(9-4) will look ahead to non-conference action when the entertain The Badger Braves (14-6) on Monday, October 9th. Also on Monday, LaBrae (15-5)(9-4) will get back to action when they stay on the road to face The Warren G. Harding Raiders (3-13).
