By Ty Bartell

CAMPBELL OH- It is amazing what high school kids can accomplish in the world of sports when given the
right kind of care, love and attention. Championships can be won, programs could be established and relationships will be built that last a lifetime. Looking at The Campbell-Memorial Red Devils volleyball team, they are rapidly becoming one of those comeback stories. In the midst of one of their best volleyball seasons ever, The Red Devils have won a program best 8 conference matches this season and were 13-5 overall heading into Wednesday night. The always competitive, Maggie Martin led Heartland-Christian Lions came to town with plenty of height to their credit. Setting up a fun non-conference Wednesday showdown on the network!

Both The Red Devils and The Lions exchanged early scores as no real leader emerged early on. Stopping at just about every score in the opening set through the first nine points. In the middle portion of the set, Campbell went on key rally and separated themselves from Heartland-Christian, securing the 25-16 set win for The Red Devils. Continuing the momentum in the second set, Campbell continued to find success both defensively at the net and behind the service line. The Red Devils won more convincingly in set two 25-12. By set three, Campbell had firm hold of the momentum up 2-0 in sets at home. The Devils got even better as the match rolled along, winning set three by the largest margin at 25-10 to complete the straight set sweep of The Lions.

Ms. 2000, Carla Ramirez-Ortiz continued to be one of the best setters in the area, racking up 28 assists and 8 digs in the match. Kendall Brunn dominated at the net once again with 3 blocks while leading the team with 12 kills! Campbell put in a team effort defensively, as both Angeliz Diaz and Cyra Cross led the team with 9 digs a piece and Gabriella Villanueva-Santos recorded 7 digs herself. Cyra Cross also got it done behind the service line with 4 aces. Elysia Rudolphi made noise with her time on the court, notching 5 kills in the match. One of the Players of the Match, MiLeena Williams was impressive all over the box score, with 10 kills, 4 aces and 3 blocks on the night!

Campbell (14-5)(8-4) will now set up a fun home conference matchup with LaBrae (15-4)(9-3) on Thursday, October 5th. Both teams went to five sets in their prior meeting with The Vikings getting the edge 3-2. Heartland-Christian (7-12) will play back at home on Saturday, October 7th against The Bristol Panthers (5-13). The Lions won a prior meeting with The Panthers this season 3-1.
