SPRINGFIELD SETS THE TONE IN CONFERENCE PLAY

NORTH JACKSON OH- The Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC) looks to be an interesting and competitive conference in both the scarlet and gray divisions in girls basketball. With conference play opening up for MVAC teams on both sides. Thursday night, it led to a lot of intriguing matchups within the divisions. One of those matchups were, winners of the scarlet division a year ago, The Springfield Tigers taking on the returning Jackson-Milton Blue Jays for the first time since February 2nd, 2022!

Springfield came out with a fury as three different Tigers scored in the first 65 seconds to take an early 7-0 advantage. Tigers continued to play at their tempo in the opening quarter as Jameka Brungard scored 9 points in the first quarter, helping Springfield hold a 17-2 advantage after the first quarter. The Tigers continued to display their dominance in the second, expanding on their lead and taking a 32-8 edge into the halftime locker room.

Springfield looked to be on the same trajectory in the second half as following the third quarter they were up by a commanding 46-14 lead. However, a scrappy bunch of you Blue Jays refused to throw in the towel and continued to battle for the full 32 minutes, managing to win the fourth quarter 11-7. However, it would not be enough, as The Tigers set the tone in conference play with the 53-25 victory over Jackson-Milton.

Springfield’s Jameka Brungard won Player of the Game honors with her 18 points in the game all of which were scored in the first half! Following her was Mariana Tuscano who finished with 7 points, Reagan Rogenski who finished with 6 points and both Karigan Mullen and Kristina Vecchione who each had 5 points. Primary scorers for The Blue Jays were both Emma Johns and Amani Yasin who both had 9 points on the evening.

Springfield (3-2)(1-0) will now get back home where they will continue conference play, hosting The Western Reserve Blue Devils (1-2)(0-0) on Monday, December 11th with a 7 p.m. tip-off. For Jackson-Milton (1-2) they will go back out of conference when they host The Heartland-Christian Lions (3-1) on Saturday, December 9th scheduled for a 1:45 p.m. tip-off.
