MAILACH MAILED IN AS 2023 YSN SETTER OF THE YEAR

CORTLAND OH- Anyone who knows volleyball knows how important the position of setter is to a team’s success.  In the YSN family, great setters aren’t hard to find. Ranging from young players who will be here for a while, to senior leaders having an awesome send off, the setters in the area have been putting on a show. That is why making the decision of setter of the year was so hard.  In the end it was Lakeview’s Mallory Mailach that stood out the most.

Mailach absolutely put up the numbers to compete with setters in the area, she finished the season with 854 assists, averaging over 11 a set.  In 1856 total sets, Mailach only made 13 ball handling errors all year.  The numbers obviously speak for themselves. However, there were other setters with just as impressive numbers.  The thing that tipped the scales in Mailach’s favor was the fact that this was her first season running a 5-1 offense for the Bulldogs. She set last season in a 6-2 splitting time with Maggie Pavlansky, who graduated.  This year it was Mailach’s show.  A lot of the offense from last season also graduated with Pavlansky, so not only did Mailach have to step up big time, she also had to do it with a majority of the hitters being in much bigger roles on the varsity level. She upped her assist total from a year ago by nearly 400.  Simply put Mailach was not set up for easy success.  She had to absolutely flex her leadership muscles, and she got the best out of the hitters on the floor.

Because of her incredible season and stepping up in a big way for her team when they needed her most, Mailach is named the 2023 YSN Setter of the Year. We want to congratulate her and the Bulldogs on an incredible season. You can check out Mallory, and all your favorite YSN volleyball players one more time this year in the YSN All Star Game on November 5th at 4:00 at Westminster College!

POLAND SETS UP SECOND MEETING WITH WILDCATS

POLAND OH- Poland continued their blazing hot streak as they ventured into the playoffs, securing a resounding victory over East Liverpool with a final score of 42-14.

Right from the kickoff, Poland asserted their dominance, surging to a commanding 21-0 lead before East Liverpool could even catch their breath. The Bulldogs displayed their offensive prowess, amassing a total of 336 yards.

Quarterback Dom Pagano orchestrated the offense brilliantly, completing 9 of 10 passes for 164 yards and connecting for two crucial touchdowns. He didn’t stop there, contributing on the ground with a touchdown run of his own.

The ground game was equally impressive for Poland, with Cole Fulton and Danny Nittoli shouldering much of the workload. Both players found the end zone with rushing touchdowns, and Fulton led the way with an impressive 94 yards on just seven carries.

Poland’s defense was relentless for the majority of the game, keeping East Liverpool’s offensive efforts at bay for three quarters. The Bulldogs’ defensive starters yielded little to their opponents, limiting their progress.

Although East Liverpool managed to score two fourth-quarter touchdowns, with Gavin Wright connecting with Blake Adkins and Dorian Burchett, Poland’s defense proved dominant throughout. The Potters were restricted to just 167 total yards, including a mere 34 rushing yards.

With this decisive win, Poland advanced to face Struthers, who narrowly defeated Girard 21-16 in their recent matchup. The Bulldogs had already squared off against Struthers in the regular season finale, narrowly edging out a thrilling 28-27 overtime victory. The playoffs promise even more exciting matchups, and Poland’s impressive form carries them into the next round with high hopes.

LAKEVIEW GETS STUNG BY THE HORNETS

By Ty Bartell

MEDINA OH- One of the best parts of the state tournament in volleyball are the stories that are created
in the postseason. 4 different divisions, 16 different regions and 64 different districts, each with their own unique set of stories. In the Division 3, Region 9, Northeast 1 district, the story of The Kirtland Hornets versus The Lakeview Bulldogs in a district semi-final had a tie in of a third team. The Crestview Rebels. Rewinding it back to last year, The Rebels defeated both Lakeview in the district semis and Kirtland in the district final en route to their District Championship a year ago.

This year, the #3 seeded Bulldogs rolled into the tournament with a 20-4 record, while the #11 seeded Hornets were 15-8 prior to the match.
Both teams battled it out in a close set one; however, Kirtland got key plays down the stretch to clinch the opening set 25-21. The heartbreak did not stop there for The Bulldogs, both teams exchanged in another back-and-forth affair in set two, but again The Hornets saw themselves ahead of Lakeview 25-21 in set two. Holding a 2-0 set advantage, Kirtland had all the pressure applied on The Bulldogs. Lakeview would grab an early 10-5 lead in an attempt to get a set back. But The Hornets would not be denied on Wednesday night, winning a third straight close set 25-20 to claim the district semi-final in straight sets over Lakeview. Kirtland (16-8) will now square-off with Crestview (25-0) in a District Championship rematch from a year ago!

We here at YSN wish the best of luck to the Lakeview players  in accomplishing all their future goals. It was and always is an honor to be a small part of your season! Stay tuned with YSN to keep updated on all Lakeview Bulldogs athletics scores, stats, stories and more!
