URSULINE DOMINATES STEEL VALLEY RIVALS

By Tim Corso

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Ursuline took down Chaney 37-6 in Steel Valley Conference play Friday night.

Both teams got off to a slow start, punting on their first drives.

Once the Irish got the ball back though, they put together a sustained drive, converting on fourth down once, then breaking the scoreless drought halfway through the first on a 21-yard Joe Balog touchdown run.

Chaney’s defense hung in there for the Irish’s next drive by forcing an Anthony Tabak field goal attempt.

Tabak nailed a 40-yard kick that set a new Ursuline record to extend the Irish lead to 11-0.

That was the last piece of resistance seen from the Chaney defense as Ursuline got another three-and-out on defense before DC Ferrell had a 21-yard run of his own.

Ferrell accounted for three total touchdowns on the night, including two through air.

One was to Devonte Taylor (22 yards) and the other to Ray Javey (39 yards).

The Ursuline defense also forced four turnovers. They forced a pair of Cowboy fumbles, while getting an interception from both Todd and Tizzel White.

Ursuline (8-1) will take on Cardinal Mooney (3-6) next Friday 10/25 in the Holy War at Stambaugh Stadium with a chance to capture their 6th straight conference crown.

Meanwhile, Chaney (3-5) will play East (5-4) in a huge rivalry matchup at Rayen Stadium next Friday as well.

MOONEY FINDS THEIR GROOVE

By Matt Maher

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The race for the top of the Steel Valley Conference is starting up as we shift to the second half of the season and Thursday night saw half of the conference duke it out for a piece of first place. Chaney visited Cardinal Mooney for an always large conference matchup where we saw some good defense and an opportunistic offense.

Chaney received the ball to begin the contest and had a nice first possession but the Mooney defense was not messing around and made a big stop on their own side of the field and started a run of their own.

Chaney showed some very tough and strong defense, so strong they quickly forced Mooney to a 4th and long situation. The Cardinals punted the ball and took advantage of Chanel’s miscue on reception and recovered the ball for great field position. From here Vince Gentile would connect with Dennis Clark on a 21 yard pass into the end zone to give Mooney the lead with 4:56 still up on the clock.

Chaney went into the second quarter with the ball and started another run down the field but the Mooney defense looked stronger as the game progressed and Chaney would end up giving the ball back over to Mooney where their defense would make an impressive stop. This game saw a lot of back and forth between the two sides where it was looking like either team could break through.

The Cardinals would break through with exactly one minute remaining in the half with a 4 yard touchdown run from Adyn Paige. With another successful PAT from Anthony Spirko the lead would be 14-0 going into halftime.

Mooney got the ball to begin the second and we saw more defense come from Chaney from the onset and more back and forth between the two sides. Both teams looked like they would score with Chaney getting their biggest possession yet that would be tainted by flying flags and well read defense.

With Chaney down by two Mooney had been trying to find progress through the air but all of the passes ended up too high over the receiver through the game. That changed in the third where Vince Gentile finally connected with Rocco Gentile for a first down. Not too long after they tried it again, Gentile connected with Gentile and this time Rocco ran it into the end zone from about 30 yards out! The PAT missed just to the right and Mooney led 20-0.

Cardinal Mooney would make another big stop after their late TD and forced Chaney to punt. With high pressure coming from the Mooney defense the Chaney kick went straight up in the air and moved maybe 3 yards up. Brady Desmond was waiting under the ball when he saw it was staying close by. Desmond caught the ball and immediately ran it into the end zone for another touchdown this time from about 10 yards out. Spirko hit his kick this time and Mooney took a comfortable 27-0 lead into the 4th.

Both teams would get the ball throughout the 4th and neither side could get anything going in the final frame. Defense would come out strong for both teams even when both sides decided to switch up their lines and introduce different players to the game. Chaney finished with possession but conceded with about 25 seconds left and Mooney would go on to win their 2nd game of the year.

It was a good night for Cardinal Mooney who showed some great defense against a red hot offense from Chaney who had just upset the Cardinals from Canfield a week ago. Mooney took full advantage of the situations put forth either due to their own skills or due to some mistakes made on the field, Cardinal Mooney flew high over their conference foes. Chaney ( 2-4, 0-1) will be back in action next Friday at 4pm when they visit University School while Cardinal Mooney (2-5, 1-0) will travel up 422 to take on the Warren G Harding Raiders next Friday at 7pm.
