RAIDERS FIGHT TO THE END

MENTOR OH- From the start of the playoffs, and possibly before that people had a possible matchup between Kirtland and South Range circled. It finally came to pass on Saturday night and both teams proved why the hype was so great.

The Raiders looked to make a statement on their first possession as they converted a fourth down conversion in their own territory. Later in the drive on a 4th and long the Raiders threw out a fake punt. The spot put them inches short, and gave the Hornets the ball.

Kirtland who is known much more for their physical run game than their air attack saw an opportunity to grab quick momentum and took it with a long touchdown pass on their first play from scrimmage. It would establish a tone that would haunt the Raiders all night.

Kirtland scores again on another big play. And just like that the Raiders were playing from behind. Their offense stabilized things in the first half though, making it a manageable 28-13 halftime Kirtland lead.

Kirtland scores on their first possession of the second half, but then the Raiders answered, got a stop, and scored again to cut the game to a one possession 35-27 game. On Kirtland’s next possession, the Raiders got a big sack that pushed the Hornets to force a 3rd and 12. Kirtland quarterback Liam Powers hit Joey Grazia for maybe the biggest play of the game to convert the 3rd and 12. Kirtland would go on to score, and eat up a lot of clock while they were at it to go up 42-27. Both teams would trade scores to make the final 49-35.

The Raiders scored the most points given up by Kirtland all season. Michael Patrone was electric as always running the ball 14 times for 78 yards and a touchdown. He went 15-22 through the air with 201 yards 3 TD, and 2 INT. Dylan Dominguez finished with 64 yards on 13 carries. Luke Crumbacher had 3 receptions for 61 yards.

RAIDERS ROLLING ON ALL CYLINDERS

CANFIELD OH- South Range is on yer another playoff run. That’s become a normal thing in the 25 years of head coach Dan Yeagley’s tenure with the program. The Raiders have advanced to the regional semifinals with a 49-16 drumming of Beachwood.

The Raiders set the tone early, marching down the field on their first drive. After Michael Patrone hit Jake Gehring for a long pass up the middle, Dylan Dominguez capped off the drive with a trip to the endzone from 3 yards out. Later in the half, Luke Blasko bolted for a 46 yard touchdown on a reverse, and then after a turnover Dominguez scampered to a 48 yard touchdown run. Beachwood was keeping afloat, trailing just 21-10 just before halftime. Then Patrone found Luke Crumbacher for a massive 57 yard score to make it 28-10 before the half. The Raiders kept their foot on the gas and outscored the Bison 28-6 in the second half.

South Range now sets their sights on an all to familiar foe. The Raiders will host Crestview, who is coming off a big upset over Garfield. That game is set for Saturday at 7:00.

RAIDERS SAIL PAST HARRISON CENTRAL

CANFIELD OH- After a slow start and an early deficit, South Range stormed ahead of Harrison Central in round 2 of the OHSAA playoffs. The Raiders used 42 unanswered points to blow out the Huskies 55-14.

Dylan Dominguez ran for 116 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 10 carries for the Raiders. Michael Patrone went 4 of 7 with 188 yards and 2 touchdowns through the air. He was also a threat with his legs gaining 72 yards on the ground with a pair of scores. Luke Crumbacher has a big night with 3 catches and 173 yards with two touchdowns.

The Raiders advance to host Beachwood in the next round of the OHSAA playoffs on Saturday night at 7:00.

SOUTH RANGE CRUISES TO NE8 TITLE

HUBBARD, Ohio – On the finale of the regular season, Hubbard and South Range faced off to decide the NE8 conference champion. The Eagles needed to win to grab at least a share of the conference title, partnered by a Poland loss would have given them the outright championship. All South Range needed was to beat Hubbard to secure their first NE8 Football title, and they did it in style.

From the start, the Raiders looked to attack. After winning the toss, the Raiders elected to receive and only needed 7 plays to get on the board. On a drive that saw big gains from junior running back Dylan Dominguez and senior quarterback Michael Patrone, Dominguez was able to punch it in from 13 yards out just a little over two minutes into the game.

Hubbard, set to start their drive at the Eagle 31-yard line, marched out their third starting quarterback in three weeks. Following injuries to first string Kobe Krisuk and backup Evan Jarvis, sophomore Nik Hendrix got the start week 5 against Poland. With Jarvis back in the lineup this week, he was now tasked with the quarterback duties.

Unfortunately for Jarvis, things got off to a rocky start. On the third play of the drive, Jarvis’ first pass of the game was intercepted and set the Raiders up at the Hubbard 33.

Four minutes after his first score, Dominquez was able to find the endzone again, this time from 7 yards out, increasing the Raider lead to 14. Hubbard already trailing by two scores needed to produce on their second drive of the game, and who else to turn to but T.C. Caffey. On the first play of the drive, all Jarvis needed to do was give the ball to Caffey and watch him work. Bouncing it out to the left before snapping a defender off with an impressive spin move, Caffey had nothing but green in front of him on his way to a 67-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 14-7.

Just as Hubbard got their first bit of momentum, South Range struck fast to rip the rug right out from the Eagles. Responding to Caffey’s big run, Dominguez took one of his own runs up the far sideline into the endzone from 68 yards out.

Following a Hubbard three and out, South Range moved the ball down the field at will. The Raiders went 65 yards in 6 plays, capping their drive with a 28-yard jet sweep to pay dirt from senior Luke Blasko.

Trailing by three scores, Hubbard was in desperation mode and not looking to go away easily. The Eagles attacked the edges of the South Range defense, hitting them again and again with the outside run. Brant Boraweic would put an exclamation point on Hubbard’s first sustaineddrive of the game on a jet sweep from 26 yards out, bring the score to 28-14.

On the Raider ensuing possession, Dominguez would put the ball on the ground, allowing Hubbard to take over at the Raider 32. This was the Eagle’s time to strike and make it a one-score game prior to halftime, but instead would go three and out and allow South Range to march down the field and see Harley Novak put one through the uprights from 32 yards out going into the half.

While the first half saw these two teams trading blows, the second half was all South Range. Scoring on 2 of their first 3 drives of the half, the Raiders were able to expand their lead to 44-14 and put the running clock into effect. Having no answer for the South Range defensive line, Hubbard failed to put points on the board to stop the running clock.

*Last night was just the 2nd time in Hubbard’s history that the running clock has come into effect with them on the losing side. *

RANGE TAMES WILDCATS

CANFIELD OH- South Range has been rolling through the NE8 all season, and Friday night was no different. They stormed out the gates with 20 first quarter points, and never looked back in a 40-6 rout of Struthers.

Mike Patrone went 6-11 for 162 yards and 3 TDs all in the first half. Luke Blasko had a stellar night scoring twice for the Raiders, and also bringing the hammer several times on defense.  Luke Crumbacher has an 80 yards INT return to set up a Connor Jones touchdown, which gave the Raiders a 20-0 lead in the first quarter. Dylan Dominguez carries the ball 11 times for 70 yards. The Raiders picked up 344 total yards.

Dylan Greenwood went 11-21 with 197 yards and a TD for Struthers. Anthony Carter led the Wildcats on the ground with 55 yards on 6 carries.

South Range will look to finish the regular season undefeated as they take on Hubbard in week 6. Hubbard dropped their first game of the season to Poland in Week 5. The Wildcats have a big test hosting Poland next week.

RAIDERS LIGHT UP JEFFERSON

JEFFERSON OH- Friday night the Raiders made the long drive up route 11 to face the Jefferson Falcons, the long drive was worth it. South Range came away with a 52-20 win on Friday night to improve to 4-0 on the season. It was a beautiful night for high school football. Both teams came out ready to go. Jefferson started out slow and couldn’t get a drive together. A blocked punt gave the Raiders great field position and it didn’t take them long to take advantage of it. Raiders had the ball inside the 30 yard line and scored quickly. The drive was capped off by a 9yd strike from Michael Patrone to Corey Penick for the touchdown. The next drive for Jefferson was promising but an interception gave the ball right back to the Raiders. South Range again drove right back down the field and scored on a 4 yard pass to Luke Blasko. But Jefferson wasn’t going to go away. Sophomore QB Grant Hitchcock took his team right back down the field and he connected with Austin Jones for a 24 yard touchdown to cut the lead to 14-7. Raiders next drive stalled and Jefferson had some momentum. But the Raiders defense came to play Friday night. They were able to hold off the Falcons drive and get the ball back for Patrone and company.  The Raiders scored 3 more times before halftime.

South Range keep that rolling into the second half and was able to get a running clock into the 3rd quarter. Jefferson had some promising drives but just weren’t able to finish them off. But they are a young team with a lot of talent. Hitchcock is only in his first year at starting qb and has a bright future. He was able to finish with 249 total yards on the evening. Senior running back Daniel Bruckman contributed with 90 yards of his own on the ground.

The Raiders offense was clicking on all eight cylinders. The run game, pass game, defense, and special teams all looked very good for them Friday night. Michael Patrone had 364 total yards. 220 passing and 144 on the ground. He threw for 5 TDs. That is a school record. Dylan Dominguez had 163 total yards, 2 rushing TDs, and 2 receiving TDs. And senior kicker Harley Novak chipped in with 10 points of her own, making all 7 extra points and making a 26 yd field goal in the forth.

Both teams have their final regular season home games next week as Jefferson welcomes in Girard, and the Raiders will  take on Struthers.

RAIDERS WRECK GIRARD’S HOME OPENER

GIRARD OH- Girard and South Range matched up on Friday night for what was one of the more anticipated games of the week. Both teams were coming off impressive victories in week 1. The Raiders made a statement with a 56-28 victory.

It was all South Range to start. The Indians could do nothing to slow down the mighty rushing attack of the Raiders. They quickly jumped out to a 28-6 halftime lead. Girard would fight back in the third however, and score 15 unanswered points to make it 28-21. After trading touchdowns, the Raiders once again locked down the Indians offense, and they cruised to a 56-28 victory.

Dylan Dominguez ran the ship for the Raiders gaining 117 yards on 18 carries. Mike Patrone only played a half, but he threw for 95 yards and 2TDs.

The Raiders will look to stay unbeaten as they host Niles next Friday. Girard will need to bounce back quickly as they will face Poland.

RANGE BARRELS THROUGH BULLDOGS

CANFIELD,OH- Turnovers, special teams and field position played a big factor in week one of the high school football season for all teams in Northeastern Ohio thanks to mother nature. The South Range Raiders used these factors to their advantage against the Poland Bulldogs. The Raiders would force 3 turnovers that led to South Range Quarterback Michael Patrone scoring twice on the ground for the Raiders. The Raiders outrun the Bulldogs in soaked weather conditions 24-21.

The Raiders kicked off scoring with a 17 yard touchdown run by Running Back Dylan Dominguez to give South Range the early lead, 7-0. Poland would answer after coming out of a lightning delay when Running Back Peyton Mrakovich rushed for 49 yard to the endzone to tie the game up at 7. South Range continued their rushing attack with a 73 yard touchdown run down the middle by Quarterback Michael Patrone to regain the lead 14-7 in favor of the Raiders.
In the third quarter, the Bulldogs would tie the game again with a hard fought touchdown run by Fullback Christian Colosimo from 4 yards to tie the game at 14. The Raiders would score in the following possession with a 22 yard run by Patrone to regain the lead for the third time tonight. Poland, with under a minute left, would score when Quarterback Jack Fulton scored from two yards out but it would not be enough to catch up to the Raiders. South Range wins 24-21.
