TIGERS TAKE THEIR TALENTS TO UNITED

HANOVERTON OH- In a challenging road game on Saturday afternoon, Springfield showcased resilience and determination, securing a 48-40 victory against United.

Springfield’s dynamic duo, Jameka Brungard and Ava Vecchione, each contributed 18 points, leading the Tigers in scoring. Mariana Tuscano added 6 points to round out Springfield’s offensive efforts.

United put up a strong fight, with Grace Knight leading the way with 14 points, closely followed by Addy Blazer with 9 points and Grayson Kidder contributing 7 points.

The hard-fought win improves Springfield’s record to 8-4 as they head back into league play on Monday against McDonald. United, with a record of 8-3, will look to bounce back on Monday with a matchup against Lisbon.

CHANEY POSTS BIG WIN OVER HUBBARD

HUBBARD, OH- In a thrilling road encounter, the Chaney Cowgirls showcased their resilience and determination, overcoming an 8-point deficit in the final quarter to secure a hard-fought 42-37 win against Hubbard. The victory propels Chaney to an impressive 8-3 record on the road, highlighting their ability to perform under pressure away from home.

The game unfolded with Hubbard taking an early lead, but Chaney demonstrated their tenacity by staging a comeback in the crucial final quarter. Freshman sensation Alyssa Brown played a pivotal role in the victory, contributing a stellar performance with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists. Brown’s all-around effort was instrumental in Chaney’s ability to turn the tide and secure the win.

Janiya Burley Anderson added to the scoring with 13 points, further bolstering Chaney’s offensive output. Meanwhile, Janiah Eiland made her presence felt on the boards, grabbing an impressive 10 rebounds to help control the paint.

UNITED SURVIVES SCARE FROM THE BULLDOGS

EAST PALESTINE OH- In a closely contested battle, United managed to secure a hard-fought victory over a resilient East Palestine team, emerging triumphant with a final score of 45-36. The game remained closely contested throughout, with United showcasing their ability to act decisively in the late stages to avoid an upset bid.

United’s offensive efforts were led by Grace Knight and Katie Dees, both contributing 10 points to the team’s overall score. Grayson Kidder added 9 points, and Sam Lippiatt contributed 8 points to round out a balanced scoring effort.

East Palestine, despite the loss, saw strong performances from Leila Martin, who led all scorers with 15 points, and Gabby Andre, who added 11 points to the team’s effort.

United (8-2) will carry the momentum from this hard-fought win into their next game on Saturday, where they will face Springfield at home. East Palestine (5-5) looks ahead to their next matchup on Monday, taking on Columbiana in their continued campaign.

EAGLES SHOW THEIR MUSCLES

WARREN OH- On their last day of winter break, Warren JFK showcased their basketball prowess with a spectacular showing against Badger, controlling the entire game and cruising to a commanding 78-41 win. The Eagles’ well-rounded performance highlighted their strength on both ends of the court.

Warren JFK’s scoring was led by Michael Condoleon, who contributed an impressive 21 points, while Nico Ciminero added 18 points, and Nick Ryan and Jaden Rishel each tallied 16 points. The Eagles’ balanced scoring reflected their depth and offensive efficiency.

Badger’s Duncan Moy delivered a standout individual performance, putting up 26 points in a resilient effort.

With this convincing win, Warren JFK improves to an outstanding 9-1 record and will carry their momentum into the next challenge as they travel to face Lake Center Christian on Friday. Badger, now standing at 7-2, faces a tough road test against Bristol in their upcoming matchup.

VALLEY LOCKS IT DOWN LATE

Youngstown, OH- Valley Christian hosted Lowellville in a non-conference match Tuesday evening. Both teams were coming off a loss and were looking to get a key win. Both teams were going back and forth throughout the night as the score was 30-25 at half in favor of Valley. In the second half, Lowellville was able to take a lead and had the Eagles on the ropes. The Eagle defense was suffocating during the final 3 minutes of the game not allowing the Rockets to get hardly any shots off. In the end Valley Christian held on for the thrilling 47-43 win! 

 

Rashaun Bell came up big for Valley Christian all night. It seemed like anytime the Eagles needed a basket, he came through. Bell led the Eagles with 23 points and was an effective 6/9 from the foul line. What was most impressive is that Rashaun Bell was excellent defensively making it tough for anyone to score on him. Deion Miller was also solid, scoring 11 points in helping Valley to victory.

 

Although it wasn’t the outcome they wanted, Lowellville had three players score in double figures. Michael Balone led the Rockets with 12 points. Matt Lucido chipped in 11, while Tino Ocasio-Rivera added 10. Lowellville had multiple chances from the foul line, but that was an area of struggle. The Rockets were just 9/23 from the foul line which proved to be the difference in the game.

 

With the win, Valley Christian improves to 4-3 on the season. They will host Southern Local on Friday at 7:00 pm. Lowellville, drops to 2-5 with the loss.The Rockets will hit the road again this Friday at Mineral Ridge.

 

 

MOONEY RULES THE ROOST IN YOUNGSTOWN

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Some days you’re feeling good and some days you’re feeling great and on Saturday afternoon Cardinal Mooney felt the latter when they traveled to Valley Christian and dominated with a capital D. The Cardinals never looked off and their shots reflected that in the final score which ended as a 75-45 win for Mooney.

 

Mooney came out with a statement and that statement was “get out of the way, we’re going to score” and score they did as they put up 22 points to the Eagles 8. Mooney saw some great scores from the likes of Nick Pregibon, Nico Genova and Jibri Carter but it was Ashton O’Brien who dazzled in the first. O’Brien put up 9 points including two elite looking 3’s and a beautiful drive to the net that resulted in an and-1 that he delivered on. The Cardinals would just be getting started while the Eagles just couldn’t get much past Mooney’s defense but what they did get through was 4 points for Deion Miller and two more scores from two separate sources.

 

Valley Christian looked much better in the second and as a result they doubled their score from the first with 16 points. Jaylen Robinson hit a dramatic and-1 and Patrick Riley went 3-for-4 from the stripe. While we saw some good individual efforts from the Eagles we saw greatness from Ra’Shaun Bell who found 8 points against a menacing cardinals defense. Bell had two field goals but he also went a perfect 4-for4 from the line which helped, not only himself, but his team find more confidence. 

 

While Valley Christian looked better, Mooney was still, well, Mooney and they put up 24 more points to end the half with 46 points! Pregibon added to his total with two and-1’s and O’Brien found two more points for his day but the real story was Carter who not only found 7 points but also hit his 200th career 3-pointer and cemented himself in school history! 

 

Valley Christian continued to stay consistent into the second half. The Eagles found 11 points in quarter number three with 5 of them coming from Robinson and 4 more coming from Bell. Mooney started to settle down a bit by only scoring 20 points with Carter putting up 7 more points including his 201st 3 and O’Brien and Pregibon both found 5 points. 

 

The final frame went by in a flash due to Mooney scoring enough to trigger the running clock and as a result saw them only score 9 points as a team with Carter scoring 4 more to end his night at 20 points. Valley Christian was able to out score the Cardinals in this frame but finding 10 points with 6 of them coming from Bell with a nice 3 and yet another and-1, he would end the game with 18 points. 

 

While Cardinal Mooney played an exceptional game, Valley Christian still looked very good defensively but just left some holes that were just big enough for Mooney to squeeze through which was ultimately what allowed Canfield to put up 75 but if anything they still played a good game and proved that the score doesn’t tell the whole story. Cardinal Mooney (6-3) will continue their road trip when they travel to East Liverpool on January 5th at 7:00PM while Valley Christian (3-3) stays home when they host Lowellville on January 2nd at 7:00PM. 

WARREN JFK GETS THROUGH TEST ON THE ROAD

BOARDMAN OH- Warren JFK faced a formidable challenge on Friday night as they ventured into one of the toughest environments in the area, taking on Boardman. In a tightly contested matchup, JFK emerged victorious, edging out the Spartans 57-52 in a thrilling contest.

Jaden Rishel led the scoring charge for Warren JFK with an impressive 20-point performance, displaying skill and composure on the court. Michael Condoleon contributed significantly with 16 points, while Nick Ryan added 12 points and Nico Ciminero chipped in 9 points to round out the scoring for JFK.

Boardman fought valiantly in front of their home crowd, with Grayson Eicher leading the team with 14 points. Noah Ziak added 12 points, Kaden Mayhew contributed 9 points, and Nico Hozschuli tallied 8 points in a collective effort.

The hard-fought victory propels Warren JFK to an 8-1 record, and they will look to maintain their momentum when they host Badger on Wednesday. Boardman, now standing at 3-5, will hit the road on Tuesday for a matchup against Canfield, seeking to bounce back from a challenging but competitive contest. The game showcased the intensity of high school basketball and sets the stage for both teams as they continue their respective seasons.

EAGLES TURN UP THE THROTTLE IN THE SECOND HALF

HANOVERTON OH- In a clash of two formidable teams each boasting seven wins, Warren JFK showcased a commanding offensive display in the second half to overpower United with an 85-49 triumph. The game held high stakes as both squads were evenly matched with seven victories apiece entering the contest.

The first half set the stage for an intense battle, with JFK holding a 39-30 lead at halftime. However, it was the explosive offensive surge in the second half that truly defined the game.

Leading the charge for Warren JFK were standout performances from multiple players. Ava Darney led the scoring onslaught with an impressive 22 points, while Didi Ryan contributed 18 points. Gianna Pompelia added 11 points to the tally, with Hannah Myers and Maria Saunders chipping in 10 and 9 points, respectively.

On the opposing side, United fought valiantly with Grace Knight leading the charge, amassing 21 points. Addy Blazer and Sam Lippiatt contributed 8 and 6 points, respectively, while Camryn Cody matched Lippiatt’s 6-point contribution.

RAIDERS FIND WHAT THEY’RE LOOKING FOR

HUBBARD OH- South Range displayed the consistency they’ve been seeking all season, leading from start to finish in a commanding 47-28 triumph against Hubbard.

Gwen Lowry delivered a standout performance for South Range, achieving a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Supporting the scoring effort were Taylor Dado with 11 points, and both Devin Saurwein and Sydney Penick contributing 9 points each.

Hubbard faced a resilient South Range defense, with Khamyah Howell leading the scoring for the team with 9 points, accompanied by Rheanna Barr adding 5 points.

South Range’s well-rounded performance, coupled with a strong defensive showing, propelled them to a significant victory. With this win, South Range moves to a 2-5 record and will aim to build on this momentum in their upcoming road game against Rootstown on Saturday. Hubbard, now at 4-4, will look ahead to a post-Christmas road trip to face Western Reserve on December 29th. The wire-to-wire victory for South Range highlights their improved consistency and sets a positive tone as they approach the midseason mark.

WRESTLING WEDNESDAYS WITH GARY ALTHISER (EP 4) FEATURING NICK BOWSER

The Wrestling season is starting to hear up as the callender inches closer to January.  With our YSN grapplers getting into the groove of the season, we start to see who is going to be separating themselves from the rest.  YSN’s wrestling guru, and the head coach at Wellsville Gary Althiser joins Anthony Hartwig on Running Point for another edition of Wrestling Wednesdays.  They discuss the hot start Beaver Local is out to, West Brach sending their first girls team representative to a match in school history, and much more.

Also in the Episode, special guest Nick Bowser from Hubbard.  Nick is one of the area, and states best heavyweight wrestlers.  His sophomore he missed out on a trip to state thanks to a tough 1-0 decision and last season although he pushed through to Columbus, injuries hampered his ability to shine the way he knows how on that stage.  That just means the lights are ready to shine the brightest in his senior season.  He’s certainly no stranger to big time wrestling. He has clear goals to be the first wrestler to bring a trophy back to Hubbard. The road is long, the journey is tough, but what can’t Bowser do?
