CONNEAUT CARVES UP EP

EAST PALESTINE, OH- It’s a season of small victories for East Palestine this year.  The Bulldogs continue to battle each week and keep one eye on this season while keeping the other eye focused on the future.

A long bus ride from a powerhouse Conneaut team was rewarding in a 70-15 pummeling of East Palestine on Friday night.

The Spartans racked up 321 yards on the ground with seven different rushers, the leading horses were Fedor and Davison with 2 touchdowns apiece, Davison had 172 yards on 5 carries.

East Palestine was led on offense by Dominic Cathers under center who went 3 for 7 through the air for 84 yards and a score, while receiver Dalton Vance had 3 receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown.  Cathers also returned a fumble for a score on defense and ran in the 2-point conversion.  Tyler Bistarkey provided the sizzle on special teams with 6 returns for 81 yards.

The Bulldogs (0-9) will conclude their season next week against EOAC rival, Columbiana.

RUN FOR FUN; EP’S CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM KEEPS ROLLING

EAST PALESTINE, OH- It’s not Friday Night Lights, it’s not high-octane violent spikes of a volleyball, in cross-country, it’s about grace, finesse, endurance, and breaking down walls that keep you from a finish line.

As in life, this sport is about You versus You.  While all student-athletes deserve coverage, many times it’s the (quite literally) off the beaten path sports that don’t have a light shined upon them.  As you know with YSN, we try our best to provide coverage for as many of our school’s sports as we can.  Today we shine a light onto the seniors of East Palestin’s “XC” squad.

The YSN Voice of East Palestine, Tim Figley caught up with the East Palestine Cross-Country Team about their season, challenges, and obstacles they’ve faced in 2019.

LAKE CENTRAL UPSETS PALESTINE IN THRILLER

East Palestine Volleyball’s season came to an end Saturday night with a five set heartbreaker to Lake Central Catholic in the sectional finals. (24-26 25-22 25-17 22-25 15-17)

The match was very even from the start. The teams were pretty similar in style and in talent level. East Palestine was able to get a little separation late in set one with a 20-17 lead, but in what would be a theme all night Lake Central fought back to grab the set 26-24.

Min set two Palestine jumped out to a big 9-4 lead to start but the Tigers would not go away. Eventually, the set ended up tied at 14. The Bulldogs made some big-time plays while the set was tied up at 21-21 to pull enough away to win 25-22.

Set three was the only set that was one-sided. East Palestine came out strong. Emily Berger started to flex her muscles and help the Bulldogs keep their separation. An ace from McKenna Griffith gave the Bulldogs set three 25-17.

Just when it seemed that East Palestine had all the momentum, Central responded with a big run in set four. A 5-0 rally while trailing 14-8 got the Tigers within one. The Tigers then went on a 9-6 stretch to lead 22-20, and eventually take the set 25-22.

It was Lake Central that came out strong in set five. They pushed ahead 9-3 before the Bulldogs had to use a timeout. The Bulldogs came out of the time timeout and went on an 8-2 run to tie it up at 11-11. The teams traded points until the set was tied up at 15-15. Lake Central then scored two points in a row to take the set 17-15 and the match 3-2.

Emily Berger led the Bulldogs with a double-double she had 22 kills, 17 digs, and 3 blocks. Olivia Figley also had a strong night with 17 kills. Morgan Cheurco finished with 37 assists, 11 digs, and an ace.

East Palestine finishes the season with a record of 15-8.

BEARS BEAT BULLDOGS, BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA

LEETONIA, OH- Leetonia came into tonight’s matchup (4-3) coming off a 48-27 win last week against Lisbon. For East Palestine, they came into the game (0-7) losing to Southern Local 57-0.

To open up Leetonia’s senior night, Leetonia’s Jorden Baker took a kickoff return deep into the Bulldogs territory. Baker’s return later led to a Marco Ferry rushing touchdown to put the Bears up early 7-0 which would be signs to come for the Bear’s offense. The Bulldogs first drive would be only one play which resulted in a fumble and recovered by the Bears, giving them great field position. The Bears would finish the first quarter handling the Bulldogs 28-0. During the second quarter, Leetonia’s quarterback Dylan Lennon would throw his only touchdown on the night to Jorden Baker and Leetonia’s Dylan Durick would contribute two touchdowns to put the Bears up 41-0 to end the half.
The second half would be a low scoring affair. Leetonia’s Dylan Durick and Jacob McCool would be the main running-backs as Durick would score the only touchdown for the rest of the game to bring Leetonia a win against the Bulldogs 48-0.
Leetonia will advance to (5-3) beating East Palestine which falls to (0-8) on the season. The Bears head on to face United next week as the Bulldogs will face Conneaut.
Leetonia Stats
Passing: Dylan Lennon 5/7 91 yards and one touchdown.

EP UNITED

EAST PALESTINE, OH-  In East Palestine, there’s a special family that has given their all to the school’s soccer program, and over the better part of the past two decades the Patterson family have been engaged in one form or another on the pitch for the Brown and White.

The patriarch of the family is Rob Patterson who began his coaching career just trying to learn as much as he could to help his boys get the most out of the game.  Over time he has become one of the most respected coaches in the area in regards to soccer and continues to churn out top-caliber players from one side of the field to the other.

What many might not know is that Coach Patterson and his family have battled way more than soccer matches as of late, but that does not stop the tenured coach (or his family) from making every practice no matter the conditions.

We had the honor to catch up with Rob Patterson before their postseason opener to discuss all that was, is, and could be with the EP Soccer program, and how it’s impacted him.

LADY BULLDOGS ICE CHANEY IN POST SEASON PREP

EAST PALESTINE, OH-  It was a special night from the onset on Thursday in East Palestine.  Four members of the East Palestine Volleyball team were recognized for their service to the program, and as seniors, they took the floor in East Palestine for one final time.

It was one to remember for the Lady Bulldogs as they acted as a buzzsaw through timber against Chaney in straight sets, 25-10, 25-5, and 25-1.

McKenna Griffith led the charge as she had 14 points, 9 aces, and a dig.  Sophomore Big Dog of the Valley nominee for this week, Paige Snyder more than held her own with 18 points, 5 aces and a pair of digs.  Malynn Bistarkey was an assassin in the front row with 10 kills while Morgan Cheurco had a double-double with 10 points, 21 helpers, 6 aces and 2 digs.

A special moment prior to the game as the Gorby’s MVP for Thursday, Liv Figley’s Dad (Dave Figley) played the National Anthem on his guitar on his daughter’s Senior Night.

East Palestine now turns its attention to the postseason and awaits the winner of Lake Center Christian, and Liberty.  The game is hosted by Salem High School.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES’

EAST PALESTINE, OH- Twins have a bond that can never be separated.  The only time Juli and Jami Jones are not together is on the volleyball court.  Both seniors at East Palestine, Jami is known for her specialty in serving and digs, while Juli is a utility player who is known for her defense and can play the entire floor on either side of the net.  Lucky for their competition, these two perfectly harmonize one another and substitute in and out for each other every game.

These two young ladies have been teammates their entire life, but certainly, compete with each other as well for competitive balance in the Jones house!

Two hearts with one heartbeat and the passion for the game is what you’ll find when our Tim Figley sits down with the Jones sisters in this week’s East Palestine Player Profile.
