CANTON SOUTH CURLS LADY QUAKERS

SALEM, OH- Elly Exline singled twice, stole a base and scored two of the four Quakers runs in the loss to the Wildcats. Hayden Carner doubled twice and ended the evening with two more rbi. She now has 22 on the season and is one away from tying the single-season Quaker record for rbi. Fellow teammate Taylor Thorpe now has 19 rbi with her sac fly in the 7th scoring Jenna McClish. Brooke Veglia blooped a single to extend her hitting streak to 9 games. As Brooke heats up in the 6th position in the lineup, one spot in front of her is Meg Rossero who had another two-hit game and is poised to stay hot. The freshmen duo of Jenna McClish and Rylie Troy each made an impact with a hit as well as scoring a run. Rylie Troy and Meg Rossero also stole a base.

The defensive gem of the game was turned in by catcher Hayden Carner on a perfectly placed bunt from Canton South. As the ball rolled down the first base line Hayden took control and sacrificed her body to make one heck of a nice off-balance throw for a big time out. This season Hayden has taken over the pitch calling and has done a superb job. The things great catchers do – don’t always end up in the press but those that watch the game know that Carner is a beast. The pitching staff has 181 ks this season and only one batter has reached on a drop third strike and that was only because there was a runner at third and Hayden opted to allow it. Only 6 stolen bases by our opponents this season. Hats off (or helmet) to Miss Carner for leading behind the dish this season.

Salem is home vs Howland on Wednesday.

ALLIANCE TOO MUCH FOR QUAKERS

ALLIANCE, OH- The Quakers just wanted to play ball on Monday.  They found an opponent- just couldn’t find the victory on Monday as Alliance scored a pair in the fifth to seal the Aviator win.

Holt led things off on the mound for Alliance. He went one inning, allowing zero runs on two hits and walking zero.

Brock Young was on the hill for Salem. He surrendered four runs on six hits over six innings, striking out two. Offensively, the Quakers had six hits in the game. Joey Watson and Ricky Enlow all managed multiple hits for Salem. Enlow and Watson each collected two hits to lead the team.

Alliance collected six hits on the day. Datz and Heater all managed multiple hits for Alliance. Alliance didn’t commit a single error in the field. Strata had six chances in the field, the most on the team.

SALEM, MR. WILSON MENACE MINERVA

MINERVA, OH- Senior southpaw continued his dominant season on the mound Wednesday as he got his 3rd EBC win of the year going 7 innings, giving up 1 run on 7 hits and striking 7 Minerva batters in a 4-1 victory.

After giving up a run in the first inning on a balk call with a runner on third base, Eastern Gateway commit Wilson went the rest of the way without giving up another and leading the Quakers to the sweep over Minerva and the 5th conference win on the season for Salem.

The Quaker offense struck back in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by freshman Darius Beck and an error on the third basemen to give the Quakers a lead they would never relinquish.

That would be all the scoring in the game until the 6th inning when Sophomore second baseman Nick Coletta led off the inning with a double down the line and would later score on junior Dylan Sinkovich’s RBI single. The Quakers would add another insurance run in the seventh on a sac fly by freshman Blaise Exline scoring sophomore Lane Rhodes.

Salem evened their record to 8-8 on the year, 5-3 in the EBC and are back in action Friday night at Ray Reisbeck Field against United.

RHODES, SALEM BLANK MINERVA

SALEM, OH- Despite having a stellar season on the mound for Sophomore pitcher Lane Rhodes, boasting a 1.4 ERA and 27 strikeouts, the Quakers had failed to give the right-hander any run support in any of his 5 starts; until Tuesday.

After a 1, 2, 3 inning for Rhodes and the Salem defense, the Quakers erupted for 5 runs in the bottom of the frame giving Rhodes all the run support he would need to finally earn his first win as a varsity starter. Salem would add 2 more in the second, 2 in the fourth and 1 in the fifth capped off with an at-bat by who else but Lane Rhodes.

The Quaker offense scored 10 runs on 15 hits and saw 4 players with multi-hit games. Rhodes led the way at the plate as well with 3 hits, including 1 double and 3 RBI’s. Yet another sophomore Nick Coletta had 3 hits of his own to match his 3 RBI’s. Junior Joey Watson and senior Adam Wilson had 2 hits each hitting run-scoring doubles.

The Quakers remain undefeated at home running their record at The Ray (Ray Reisbeck Field) to 5-0. Salem is now 7-8 overall and 4-3 in the EBC. They will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Minerva for an EBC rematch against the Lions. First pitch is set for 5 pm.

BASH AT THE BEACH: QUAKERS CONQUER MOUNT TABOR

MYRTLE BEACH, SC- Despite allowing three runs in the sixth inning, Salem defeated Mount Tabor 6-3 on Friday. The offensive onslaught by Mount Tabor was led by Kronin and Craver, all driving in runs in the inning.

The Quakers got things moving in the first inning, when Senior, Adam Wilson doubled, scoring one run.  Salem also tallied three runs in the fourth inning.

Seth Seddon led things off on the mound for Salem. He lasted seven innings, allowing two hits and three runs while striking out five.

Stoppenhagen started the game for Mount Tabor. He went four innings, allowing six runs on five hits and striking out one. Daniels threw three innings in relief.

Salem had one ball leave the yard on the day. Joey Watson went yaya in the third inning for the Quakers.  Wilson led Salem Quakers Varsity with two hits in four at-bats.

LADY QUAKERS SHAKE UP STRUTHERS

STRUTHERS, OH- The Salem Quakers jumped out of the gate with a 13 run first inning. Hayden Carner & Jessica Slocum each homered in the first. For both these young ladies, it was their first career home run.  Every Quakers in the lineup had at least one hit in the victory.

Madison Markovich and Elly Exline each doubled and singled. Taylor Thorpe and Jess Slocum had two hits apiece. Brooke Veglia, Jenna McClish, Meg Rossero, and Bailee Thorn each singled. Thorn also stole two bases while Alyssa Bricker, Elly Exline, Rylie Troy, and Brooke Veglia added a stolen base each. Sara Castles reached base in her at-bat.

Rylie Troy went 4 innings in the circle for the Quakers. The freshman struck out 5, allowed 0 earned runs and walked just 1. She showed great poise and composure throughout. Taylor Thorpe got the start and gritted through the leg injury pitching one shutout inning with a K.

Jessica Slocum shot down two runners attempting extra bases from her centerfield position. Bailee Thorn (SS) made a fantastic sprinting catch on a soft liner up the middle. As impressive was Jenna McClish’s (2B) leaping attempt (all air and dirt) behind Bailee. It’s quite possible both girls could have caught the would be single, showing impressive range.

The Lady Quakers will return home Tuesday to battle Carrollton.

WEEKEND WARRIORS TOP LAKEVIEW

BELOIT, OH- Lakeview watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 16-3 loss to West Branch on Saturday. West Branch scored on a single by Rito, an error, a single by Blake, and a single by Alazous in the first inning.

The Lakeview struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing West Branch, giving up 16 runs.

R Pittman was credited with the victory for West Branch. She lasted five innings, allowing nine hits and three runs while striking out two and walking one.

Cait Kelm took the loss for Lakeview. She allowed 13 hits and 16 runs over four innings, striking out two.  Offensively for the Lady Bulldogs, they tallied nine hits on the day. Kelm and Laura Garvin all managed multiple hits for Lakeview. Kelm led Lakeview with three hits in three at-bats.

West Branch scattered 13 hits in the game. Alazous, Rito, S Mercer, S Morris, and Blake each racked up multiple hits for West Branch. Alazous went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead West Branch in hits.

 

In the second game, Lakeview fell behind early again and couldn’t come back in a 13-3 loss to the Lady Warriors. West Branch scored on an error, a single by Rito, and a groundout by Rockwell in the first inning.

West Branch scored five runs in the third inning. West Branch batters contributing to the big inning included Mesler, Grace, Mercer, and Rito, who each had RBIs in the inning.  Pittman led the West Branch to victory on the rubber. She went four innings, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out three and walking one. Rockwell threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Raegan Schick took the loss for Lakeview. She allowed 13 hits and 13 runs over four and two-thirds innings.

Mariah Tackett, Schick, Beady Titus, Abbie Campana, and Laura Garvin each collected one hit to lead Lakeview.

West Branch racked up 13 hits in the game. Rito, Mercer, Alazous, and Mesler all managed multiple hits for West Branch. Rito went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead West Branch in hits.

CLIPPERS FALL TO WARRIORS

BELOIT, OH- For the third time this week Columbiana found themselves in an early hole as the defense continued to struggle in the first inning.  West Branch took advantage of several miscues to score five unearned runs in the opening frame and won it going away, 12-2. David Cunningham moved to 5-0 on the campaign as he stymied the Clippers over five innings, giving up no runs on just two hits.  He struck out six.

Chase Franken was the tough-luck loser.  The Warriors were able to put up a crooked number after the errors when Brock Hillyer delivered a big two-out, two-run base hit.  Zach Pleska worked three innings of relief for the Clippers giving up 3 runs. The big blow being a double to deep left field by Cole Bates.  Mason Walker sent everyone home in the sixth with a bases-clearing double off Wayne Davis.

The Clippers will look to right the ship on Monday as they get back into league play down on the river against the Wellsville Tigers.

SALEM CAGES THE CARDS

CANFIELD, OH- A night after beating West Branch for the first time in over 8 years, the Quakers rolled into Canfield and beat the Cardinals for the first time in over 20 years.

The Quakers’ recently lethargic offense came alive early putting up 3 runs in the first inning. After 2 hit batters and a base hit by sophomore Lane Rhodes loaded the bases, senior catcher Bryce Owen came through with a 2 out base hit, scoring two. That was quickly followed by an RBI single from freshman Blaise Exline.

That would be all the run supports junior starting pitcher Seth Seddon would need. Seddon went the distance for the Quakers giving up 1 run on 5 hits and struck out 4. Seth somehow improved upon the Quaker pitching staff’s already ridiculously low ERA to a sparse 2.13.

The Quakers added a couple of insurance runs in the 5th for good measure on a 2 out, 2 run single by senior Adam Wilson. Seddon did the rest.

Seniors Turner Johnson and Bryce Owen both had 2 hits for the Quaker offense.

The Quakers have evened their record to 5-5 on the season (3-3 in the EBC) and have the rest of the week off before they return to action on Monday at Beaver Local with the first pitch at 5:00 pm.

QUAKERS, WILSON WILL THEIR WAY TO VICTORY

SALEM, OH- The Quakers improved to 4-0 at Ray Reisbeck Field Wednesday night after rallying from a 3 run deficit to beat the Warriors 4-3.

Senior starter Adam Wilson went the distance for the Quakers giving up 3 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits while striking out 8 West Branch batters.

After West Branch took a 1 run lead in the second inning, they added 2 more in the 4th to stake a 3-0 lead. But the Quakers struck back in the bottom of the 4th to tie it at 3 after an RBI single by freshman Darius Beck and an error by the West Branch shortstop with the bases loaded that led to the 2nd and 3rd runs.

After getting into a little trouble in the 5th with runners on 1st and 2nd and only 1 out, Wilson got a ground ball out to get the lead runner at third and then a line drive that hit a West Branch runner in the foot ended the threat.

The Quakers would capitalize in the bottom of the 5th when sophomore Lane Rhodes blooped a base hit over the third baseman’s head and hustled out of the box to stretch it into a double. Wilson would help his own cause on the very next pitch as he lined a single to left field that scored Rhodes.

That would be the difference as Adam Wilson finished the deal over the next two innings to earn his third win in the EBC and bring the Quakers record to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the EBC.

The Quakers are back in action Thursday as they travel to Canfield to take on the Cardinals at 5pm.
