By Michael  Wolfgang

CANFIELD, OHIO – The Boardman Spartans set the tone early at all phases of the game against Ursuline on Sunday, shutting out the Irish 8-0. Boardman came out swinging in the first inning, hanging up a three spot, then tacked on two more runs in the top of the third inning and three more in the top of the fourth inning.

Maddie Dravecky led Boardman with two hits in her four plate appearances. In the field, Tori Strines and Natalie Davis stepped to the pitching circle and combined for a shutout, only giving up 3 Ursuline hits, and the defense behind them was squeaky clean as they did not commit a single error.

TOTH SHOWS OFF ON A SUNDAY; CARDINALS TAKE TWIN BILL SWEEP

CANFIELD OH- Weather may have dampened the JoAnn Kernan Strikeout Cancer Classic over the weekend, but that didn’t stop them from getting games in.  Canfield saw a Sunday double header end up as part of their schedule.  The Cardinals had all the right moves as they swept two games on the day. Their first matchup was a 2-0 pitcher’s duel against Champion, and their second game was an offensive show as their bats drove in a 12-2 win.

GAME 1:

In the matchup between two of the premiere teams in the area, it quickly became clear that both arms in the circle came to play.  Canfield got some momentum early however, as Hailey Freedy tripled with one out, and then was hit in on a RBI double from Marina Koenig.  After that, Champions pitched Gabby Gradishar kept the Cardinals lineup in check. Unfortunately for her and the Flashes, Canfield’s Malena Toth was locked in.

Toth pitched the complete game and shut out the Flashes line up.  She struck out 15 hitters and walked zero.  72 off Toth’s 101 pitches were strikes.  Offensively not only did Koenig drive in a run, but Leah Figeuroa went 1-2 with a RBI.  Bella Kennedy also went 1-2.

The final line for Gradishar in the circle was 6.0 IP 6 H 2 ER 10 K 0 BB.  She also went 2-3 with a double at the plate.  Bella Meyer also had a 2-3 day at the plate with a double.

GAME 2:

After their big win over Champion, the Cardinals had a quick turnaround against Geneva.  It was an opportunity for the Cardinals to show off their depth on the bench. 5 players in the lineup weren’t in the lineup for game 1.  Canfield’s offense broke free in this game scoring 12 runs on the day.

Jenna Triveri set the tone at the top of the lineup going 3-3 with 4 runs scored and 2 RBI. Marina Koenig went 2-3 at the plate a pair of RBI as well.  The most productive bat of the lineup was Taylor Morrison who went 2-4 with 4 RBI.  Emma Campbell capped off the lineup by going 2-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.

Bella Kennedy pitched the Cardinals to victory in the circle.  She went 5 innings and gave up 1 earned run on 5 hits and striking out 11.

Geneva got production out of their offense from Carmen Alvarez who went 2-2 with a RBI and a run scored.  Alyssa Palmisano went 1-2 with a RBI.  Bailey Evangelista went 1-1 at the plate with a run scored.  She also pitched a clean inning of work.

Canfield will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Hoban. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00.  Champion will return to conference action on Monday as they host LaBrae at 5:00.  Geneva will take the field again on Monday as they travel to Perry for a 4:30 first pitch.

FITCH’S STELLAR WEEK CONTINUES

By Ty Bartell

Following back-to-back victories against All American Conference (AAC) opponent The Howland Tigers, The Austintown Fitch Falcons softball team was scheduled  for their first non-conference opponent. Their competition? The two-time regining and defending Suburban-American Conference champions, The Aurora Greenmen. Another premier pitching matchup was slated, as Greenmen had The Suburban-American Pitcher of The Year a season ago in McKennah Metzger. Of course, Fitch has The AAC Pitcher of The Year and YSN Player of The Year in Sydnie Watts in the circle.

The first inning saw Austintown strike first when Ayla Ray opened the game with a single and later came home to score off of a Sydnie Watts RBI single. Great pitching ensued for the following innings, with Metzger retiring The Falcons on weak contact, while Watts struckout ten of the first eleven batters!  Fitch padded their lead in the third when the top of The Falcon order got ducks on the pond for the middle. McKenna Hogan brought home a run on a sacrifice fly, following that,  Kylie Folkwein brought home two additonal runs on a single which allowed Fitch to take a 4-0 lead.

The score remained the same until the sixth, as both Metzger and Watts got into a groove! Aurora got some traffic on the basepaths in the top half of the sixth, which would be The Greenmen’s best opportunity to score at that point. Watts faned the two following batters to keep one of Portage County’s best teams scoreless through six innings. In the bottom half of the inning, The Ace of Bases, Ayla Ray hit a triple to the gap and scored off a throwing error to third, capturing an additional insurance run for The Falcons! Watts sent The Greenmen down in order in the top of the seventh and finished with 16 strikeouts in route to a 3-0 start for Fitch!

Aurora (3-2) will be in-action next on Monday, April 3rd in a home matchup against conference-rival Tallmadge (2-1) as those two squads shared the conference a season ago. While Austintown-Fitch (3-0) will stay home and be right back on the field Friday, March 31st where they will host The Mentor Cardinals (0-0) for a 5:00 p.m. first pitch!
