BEAVER LOCAL BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH NICK MILLER

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- In anticipation of the 2024-2025 basketball season, Beaver Local’s boys basketball team is poised for action under the sage guidance of Head Coach Nick Miller. In an exclusive conversation on YSN’s latest podcast episode, Coach Miller shared insights into the team’s preparation and expectations.

Reflecting on last season’s close games, Coach Miller emphasized, “We lost some tight games early on which shaped how we approached the rest of the season. This year, we’re focusing on those lessons to be better prepared from the start.” He pointed out that the team needs to excel in the “grit and grind” aspects of the game, such as winning 50-50 balls and making free throws, to turn those narrow losses into victories. As the team fine-tuned its half-court strategies in preparation for the opener, Coach Miller highlighted the importance of sharp execution in their competitive Buckeye 8 conference. The conference promises to be highly competitive, with key opponents such as Harrison Central, St. Clairville, and cross-town rival East Liverpool.

Non-conference matchups will also test the Beavers, including an intriguing opening game against Crestview and challenging contests against strong basketball programs like West Branch and Minerva later in the year. Coach Miller’s dedication to the Beaver Local community and its athletic program is evident, stating, “We’ve really grown in terms of camaraderie. The kids and coaches from different sports work together each summer, and it’s a great experience here at Beaver Local.” Miller, a proud Beaver Local alum, cherishes his role, saying, “Every day I’m living my dream.”

He also credited his extensive coaching staff and dedicated volunteers for their tireless support of the program, underscoring that the success of the team is a collective effort. Beaver Local fans can catch the boys in action at their home opener against Crestview on December 4th. Coach Miller and his squad are excited for the support and are eager to make this season memorable. YSN will provide comprehensive coverage of the Beaver Local boys basketball team throughout the season, ensuring fans don’t miss a moment of the action.

SOUTH RANGE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 13) WITH DAVE RACH

CANFIELD, OH- The South Range Raiders’ Football team, currently boasting an impressive 13-0 record, is on the brink of advancing to the state semifinals. In the latest episode of the South Range Football Coach’s Corner, hosted by DJ Yokley and featuring head coach Dave Rach, discussions ranged from past performances to the highly anticipated upcoming match against conference rival Poland.

The Raiders have been on a roll this season, and Coach Rach attributes much of their success to the maturity and resilience of his players. Reflecting on last week’s game against Garaway, Rach noted how his team remained composed even after a significant play by the opposition. “Our guys came to the sideline, self-diagnosed the issue, and fixed it immediately,” he said. This level of poise, according to Rach, is critical, particularly in high-stakes games in the later stages of the season.

The interview also highlighted the significant advantage technology, such as sideline film review tools like Hudl, has brought to the Raiders. Rach recalled his first encounter with the technology in the 2017 season and emphasized how it allows teams to make real-time adjustments, which has been key in maintaining their flawless record.

As the conversation shifted towards the offensive strategy, praise was given to Coordinators Coach Allegretto and Coach Toy for their ability to stay ahead of the opposing defenses. Rach emphasized that their teamwork and planning have been instrumental, especially against disciplined teams like Garaway.

One standout player, Luke Starkey, received particular acclaim for his versatility and performance—earning him YSN Defensive Player of the Year. “He feels like he’s been starting for 20 years,” Rach joked, noting Starkey’s continuous improvement and impact both defensively and offensively.

Anticipation is building for the upcoming game against Poland, a team that previously had South Range down 14-0 before the Raiders rallied back. Rach remarked on the importance of resilience and preparation, emphasizing the significance of appreciating the opportunity to compete at this level.

Looking forward to Friday’s playoff clash at Spartan Stadium, Rach is excited about the community turnout and media coverage. “We view it as an opportunity to showcase our brand of football on a big stage,” he said. With both teams being local contenders, the game promises to be a highlight for high school football fans in the area.

As the Raiders gear up for this pivotal match, Coach Rach remains focused on maintaining their unbeaten streak, driven by the dedication and hard work of his players.

POTTERS MARCH AWAY FROM MINERVA

MINERVA OH- The East Liverpool Potters entered the 2022 campaign with a ton of question marks. Friday night the young Potters hopefully answered some of those questions en route to a dominant 44-7 win over Minerva. First year head coach Don Phillips brought his over 30 years of coaching experience to East Liverpool in hopes of getting a young Potters squad headed in the right direction.  Early in the 1st quarter it appeared that the stage may have been too bright for the Potters as a muffed snap to the punter led to a Minerva 5 yard touchdown giving the Lions an early 7-0 lead.

The Potters would quickly answer, marching 60 yds before Sophomore QB Gavin Wright scampered untouched 4 yards to pay dirt, followed by a 2 point conversion giving the blue and white an 8-7 lead.  The East Liverpool defense took control from that point. Minerva, held without a first half first down, muffed their own punt in the endzone leading to safety increasing the East Liverpool lead 10-7.  Gavin Wright on the ensuing possession would strike through the air finding a wide open Michael Harty for a 26 yard touchdown pass, the 2 point conversion made it 16-7 at the half.

The second half was pure domination by the Potters as Gavin Wright struck quickly on a 63 yard touchdown finding Stephen Dorsey increasing the lead 22-7.  Wright would finish the game 4/5 121yds 2TDs. Running Back Trent Davis and the Potters offensive line took control from that point. Davis would put his team on his back carrying the rock 20 times for 128 yards, adding a one yard touchdown in the 4th quarter making it 28-7. MInerva would botch the ensuing kickoff giving the Potters another opportunity.

The next possession would see Jaymin Hainey take it 34 yards to the endzone making it 36-7. Michael Harty would cap the night for the Potters, scooping up a blocked punt and taking it to the house for his second touchdown . East Liverpool would finish the night out gaining Minerva in total yards 366-36, while limiting the Lions to just 2 first downs.  The Potters look to continue their winning ways next Friday at Indian Creek.
