OLEXA, TURN ON THE POWER

BOARDMAN OH- When it comes to power in the Spartans lineup, you need look no further than Jenna Olexa. There aren’t too many players in the game who can hit a softball harder. That doesn’t always mean a home run either. While Olexa is certainly capable of launching balls over the fence, she’ll gladly take hard hit doubles to the gap.

Jenna has taken a lot of pressure off herself this season by making the decision to not play in college. As a sports society, we take so much time to wonder where someone will play at the next level, and how far they’ll go. However, sometimes playing after high school just isn’t the right fit, and that takes nothing away from the player or the person. Olexa has become a great example to young players that you can love the game, work hard at everything you do with it, but also not be defined or wrapped up in it. In a time where we are seeing athletes at all levels struggle with value and identity being tied to results, Jenna has made the mature decision to get away from that mindset, and it’s setting her up for maybe her best season yet.

Olexa comes in to today batting .423 which is good for 2nd on the team, and with 14 RBI on the season. But even more impressive than her consistent offensive presence is how good the globe is now that Jenna has taken a loose and pressure free mindset. She has 99 total chances so far at short, and has an impressive fielding percentage of .960. She’s in the middle of what might just be the best defensive infield in the area.

Jenna was able to join us on YSN’s Running Point to talk about her final season at Boardman. She talks with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about taking pressure off herself, what she does to lead the team, and so much more. Spartans fans catch up with one of the best in the latest Boardman softball player profiles.

LIFE OF BRYAN

BOARDMAN OH- Ten seniors dawn the Boardman softball field, and each brings their own unique leadership capabilities. When it comes to keeping the Spartans loose on the field, it is Cassidy Bryan.

Cassidy Bryan does an excellent job at not riding the roller coaster that the sport of softball can easily bring. When asked which teammate can make them laugh, crack a joke, and keep everyone light hearted. However, don’t let her loose nature distract you from just how good of a player Cassidy Bryan is. She sits as a staple in the middle of the lineup. When you have hitters like Maddie Lester, and Jenna Olexa on your team, and you’re still sitting in the clean up spot, you got something going for yourself.

Bryan is currently hitting.371 with an on base percentage of .436.  She has 9 RBI on 1 HR. She hit that home run in a game against Massillon Jackson which was the first home run she had ever hit. Talk about a moment to remember during your senior year of high school!

Cassidy took the time to come on to YSN’s Running Point to talk about her senior season, and give us a glimpse into the Spartans program. She talks with Anthony Hartwig and Ty Bartell about going through everything for the last time, keeping the team loose, and much more. Don’t miss the latest Boardman softball player profile.

HAUS IN THE HOUSE

BOARDMAN OH- The Boardman softball team is stocked full of seniors. Ten of them to be exact. Not many teams get to be blessed with such an abundance of leadership.  One of those senior leaders is Dana Haus. And she feels right at home in Boardman.

Every senior on the team has something they can teach the younger players. One of Dana’s biggest character strengths is confidence. Softball is a sport that demands confidence when things get low. If you get too down in the valleys, you won’t get out of them. Dana hasn’t had the results she has wanted at the plate yet this season. That hasn’t stopped her from going into every at bat believing in her abilities. She also doesn’t let her struggles at the plate effect her defense. Haus is a vacuum in the outfield. Boardman underclassmen have someone to show them what it takes to get out the struggles this sport, and life will inevitably bring.

Haus was able to take the time to come on to Running Point this week to talk about her senior season. She talks with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about being a leader, some of her favorite memories, and so much more. SHE STRINES SO BRIGHT

BOARDMAN OH- Varsity softball is always depicted as a massive step up from the levels below it. You can imagine then how hard the transition can be for student athletes. It makes it particularly impressive when freshmen come in and make immediate impacts. That is exactly what Boardman freshman Tori Strines has done.

Tori has become crucial to the Spartans success this season. You could call it a pleasant surprise. Coming into the fall, not too many people in the program would have guessed that Strines would enter May as the team leader in innings pitched. Strines is sitting at 70.2 innings pitched. She has struck out 62, and currently has an ERA of 2.97.  So far the performance that may have solidified how impressive she is was actually a loss. Tori Strines tied the circle against Massillon Jackson. On the other side in the circle, the Polar Bears featured Purdue commit Julia Gossett. Tori went toe to toe with her the whole game, and ended up being a tough luck loser in a 1-0 decision.

Tori took the time to join YSN’s Running Point to give us an insight into her freshman season. She talks to Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about what it’s been like making a sudden impact, the biggest thing she’s learned over the year, and much more.
