Under the leadership of Coach Ed Reese, a revered figure whose commitment and expertise have been influential, the team is honing their skills and preparing for a challenging schedule.

Despite being young on paper, the team is bringing back 11 or 12 letter winners, armed with significant experience after last season’s rollercoaster. Reese highlighted the importance of learning how to win games in high-pressure situations and believes his players are poised for success. “We’re going to learn how to win games a little bit,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of situational practice in cultivating consistency. The schedule is stacked with tough contenders, including local rivals Ursuline and JFK, as well as formidable teams like Akron Hoban and state champ West Branch. Reese isn’t shy about the team’s goals, aiming for a long-lasting presence in the tournament. “I want to be the team that plays the longest in the area, and that’s our goal every year,” he stated.  More than just a team, the Cardinals embody a strong sense of camaraderie and tradition, qualities deeply rooted in the Mooney family. As Coach Reese, a proud alumnus with championship accolades, stated, “The Mooney family is a real thing,” reflecting the unwavering support the program receives from its community.  As the season unfolds, Mooney baseball fans can expect a team that not only competes fiercely but also represents the legacy of Cardinal Mooney with pride and passion.

CANFIELD FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 5) WITH JOE IGNAZIO

CANFIELD, OH-  The Canfield Cardinals are navigating the challenges of a season marked by growth, learning, and pivotal adjustments under the leadership of first-year head coach Joe Ignazio. Despite facing hurdles, the team’s commitment remains unwavering and the belief among players is still strong.

During a recent episode of “Coach’s Corner” at Cocca’s Pizza, Coach Ignazio spoke candidly about the learning curve both he and his players are experiencing. “A lot of this year is about them figuring me out and me figuring them out,” Ignazio shared. “They want to test the boundaries of what they think they can get away with. Some guys have found out the hard way that I’m firm and fair.”

Following a significant win against Poland, which many compare to the famed Ohio State vs. Michigan rivalry, Ignazio emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and not underestimating opponents. However, a subsequent game against Cheney proved to be a lesson in vigilance. “Our kids took their opponent a little too lightly, and you can’t do that. Week in and week out is a grind for us,” the coach reflected.

One of the ongoing efforts is the integration of young talent, with many sophomores seeing substantial playing time. Ignazio highlighted the challenges these younger players face, including the increased speed and physicality of varsity football. He stressed the necessity for these players to become “students of the game,” dedicating time to watching film and understanding the intricate aspects of football.

As the Cardinals prepare to face a formidable Dover team, the necessity of a sound game plan and the ability to adjust on the fly become paramount. Ignazio pointed out the team’s detailed preparation process, which includes creating an extensive play sheet and making strategic adjustments based on weekly performances.

Off the field, Ignazio embraces the essence of the fall season, albeit briefly. When not engrossed in football strategies, he enjoys the seasonal change and takes delight in simple autumn pleasures like indulging in pumpkin spice coffee and blueberry donuts from White House Fruit Farms.

As the Canfield Cardinals progress through their season, a blend of discipline, learning, and adaptation stands out as the cornerstone of their efforts. With Coach Ignazio at the helm, the team continues to build resilience and focus, aiming to finish the season on a high note.

The senior tailback’s journey has been one of resilience, hard work, and unyielding determination, transforming him into the player everyone is talking about this season.

Lindsey’s path to gridiron glory was not without adversity. Overcoming a collarbone injury during his sophomore year and grappling with self-doubt as a junior, Lindsey’s ability to bounce back has been nothing short of remarkable. This year, he’s the epitome of confidence and athleticism, largely attributing his success to a rigorous offseason regimen inspired by his father, a military man. With an eye-watering routine of up to 5,000 pushups and 3,000 air squats daily, Lindsey packed on 20 pounds of muscle, enhancing his durability and explosiveness on the field.

“Man, it’s been amazing. Seeing how my game has progressed, I just feel a lot better out there,” Lindsey said, reflecting on his journey. “The 20 pounds of muscle has really helped with my durability and performance, allowing me to get up play after play, ready to go again.”

Through five games, Lindsey’s stats are phenomenal, amassing almost 600 yards over the last two matchups with just over 30 carries. His success is a testament to his relentless work ethic and the powerful synergy with his offensive line, who he credits for opening up “holes you could drive a car through.”

Yet, it’s not just his physical prowess that sets Lindsey apart. Mentally, he’s entering each game like a chess match, preparing methodically, much as he’s recently taken to the strategic game off the field thanks to his dad’s guidance. This combination of physical and mental preparedness has made him a force to be reckoned with.

Off the field, Lindsey’s aspirations are equally impressive. Aiming to become a nurse practitioner, he’s driven by a passion for helping others, showcasing his humility and unwavering focus on giving back. “I’m a person that likes to help people, to save lives and help people get better,” he shared.

In dedicating this season to his parents, Lindsey acknowledges the pivotal role they’ve played in his success. “This season is for my parents. My father pushed me into this fitness journey, and my mom has been relentless about the importance of school.”
