POLAND DEFENSE LOCKS UP THE TIGERS

POLAND OH- In a defensive showdown on Tuesday night, both Poland and Springfield battled in their season opener in Poland. The Bulldogs’ stifling defense set the tone, holding the Tigers scoreless in the first quarter. This early advantage paved the way for Poland to secure a 41-27 victory.

Poland’s offensive efforts were led by Carmine Tukala, who contributed 15 points, with solid support from Jacob Hayes, who added 9 points, and Danny Nittoli with 7 points.

Springfield showed resilience, with Aiden Appel and Carson Cunningham each putting up 9 points, but Poland’s early defensive prowess proved decisive in this hard-fought matchup.

POLAND ESCAPES A OVERTIME THRILLER IN HOME DEBUT

POLAND OH-  In a thrilling encounter, Poland hosted Springfield for their first home game of the season on Monday night. The Bulldogs provided ample excitement for their home crowd, facing a Tigers team that reached the State Final Four last year. In a closely contested battle, Poland secured a hard-fought victory with a last-second defensive stand in overtime, clinching the win with a final score of 42-41.

Poland’s offensive efforts were led by Mary Brant, who notched an impressive 16 points, and Leanne Williams, contributing 15 points.

On the Springfield side, Mariana Tuscano led the scoring with 13 points, followed closely by Jameka Brungard with 12 points and Kerrigan Mullen with 8 points.

The overtime drama and the one-point difference in the final score showcased the competitive nature of the game. Poland will continue their home stand, welcoming Boardman on Saturday for the United Way Classic, while Springfield prepares for league play with a Thursday matchup at Jackson Milton.

After a remarkable season that saw the Tigers reach the state semifinals—an unprecedented achievement for the program—Vecchione understood the challenges that lay ahead. With key leaders graduating, she recognized the need to step into a prominent role. Embracing this challenge, she dedicated herself to enhancing both her offensive skills and her already formidable defensive capabilities.

Known for her ability to keep spirits high and confidence soaring, Vecchione takes pride in being a motivational force within the team. Her dedication extends beyond personal improvement, as she actively contributes to the development of future leaders within the program.

Last season’s statistics showcase her multifaceted contributions: 118 total points, averaging 4.5 points per game, along with 55 assists and 40 steals. In the early games of the current season, Vecchione has elevated her performance, averaging an impressive 13 points per game, complemented by 9 steals and 3 assists.

Vecchione’s defensive prowess shines through as she revels in getting into the heads of opposing players, forcing them into critical mistakes. Her work ethic, coupled with her strategic approach on the court, makes her an invaluable asset to the Tigers.

With her sights set on leading the team back to another regional championship, Vecchione exemplifies resilience, dedication, and a fierce competitive spirit. TIGERS BOUNCE RIGHT BACK

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Securing a solid non-conference victory, Springfield demonstrated their prowess on Thursday with a convincing 58-33 win over Brookfield.

Leading the scoring charge for the Tigers was Karigan Mullen, who delivered an impressive performance with 19 points. Mariana Tuscano also contributed significantly, finishing in double figures with 12 points.

Springfield’s well-rounded effort and strong team play set the stage for their success in this non-conference matchup. Looking ahead, the Tigers will face another challenging non-conference test on Monday as they hit the road to take on Poland.

CRESTVIEW WINS BACK AND FORTH BATTLE WITH THE TIGERS

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- In a thrilling matchup between Crestview and Springfield, Monday’s game proved to be a battle of two talented teams. The first quarter set the tone with an even contest, concluding with an 11-10 lead for Crestview. From there, the teams engaged in a back-and-forth, with both squads trading runs throughout the game. Ultimately, it was Crestview that secured the last gasp, holding on for a narrow 54-52 victory.

Crestview’s standout performer was Addison Rhodes, who notched an impressive double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Luvrain Gaskins contributed 12 points and 5 rebounds, while in her first varsity start, Myer Miller showcased her skills with 9 points, including a crucial late three-pointer that helped keep the Rebels in front. Emily Downey added 8 points to the winning effort.

On the Springfield side, Jameka Brungard delivered a stellar performance with a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds. Ava Vecchione and Mariana Tuscano each contributed 13 points, while Karigan Mullen added 7 points.

Looking ahead, Crestview will return to the floor for their home opener against Lowellville on Thursday. Springfield, aiming to bounce back, will face Brookfield in their next matchup on Thursday at home.

TIGERS PUSH THROUGH TOUGH GAME IN HUBBARD

HUBBARD OH- In a thrilling season opener, Springfield showcased their resilience, using a powerful fourth quarter to secure a 52-43 victory over Hubbard. The game remained tightly contested through halftime, with the score deadlocked at 24-24. Even after three quarters, the teams were evenly matched at 35-35. However, Springfield took control in the final quarter, embarking on a 10-0 run and ultimately outscoring Hubbard 17-8.

Jameka Brungard emerged as a standout for Springfield, contributing an impressive 27 points and 11 rebounds. Ava Vecchione added 13 points to the scoreboard, while Mariana Tuscano chipped in with 9 points.

On the Hubbard side, Rheanna Barr and Cara Green each scored 9 points, with Barr also securing 6 rebounds. Claire Murphy and Khamyah Haynes contributed 8 and 6 points, respectively.

As both teams look ahead, Springfield is set to return to action on Monday, hosting Crestview. Meanwhile, Hubbard will defend their home court against Youngstown East on Monday. The strong performance in the season opener undoubtedly sets the tone for an exciting basketball season for both teams.

SPRINGFIELD GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH JOHN MATISI

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Last season, Springfield girls basketball got further than any other hoops team on YSN, getting all the way to Dayton. As they’ll carry the momentum from their state tournament run, they also bring some new faces into the fold.  Springfield returns three varsity starters to the floor, and a bunch of others that played a big role in their success.

Head coach John Matisi was kind enough to take the time to talk with YSN’s Ty Bartell and Anthony Hartwig about what their season will look like. He talks about the leaders that he’ll have on the floor this season, why there is such excitement around the program this season, and so much more. NEW MIDDLETOWN, OH – Coming off an impressive round one victory, head coach Sean Guerriero and the Springfield Tigers are looking to keep their momentum going as they will advance to the second round. The Tigers hosted Monroeville last week and came away with a 35-21 victory. Up next for Springfield is a road test as they will travel to Mount Vernon to take on the #2 seed, Danville on Friday night.

SPRINGFIELD REIGNS SUPREME

NEW MIDDLETOWN, OH – The Springfield Tigers played host to Monroeville in the first round of the playoffs last week and came away with a 35-21 victory. Two seniors, Kolten Ruark and Tyler Young led the charge for the Tigers as they helped pace Springfield all night long. Up next for the Tigers is going to be a long bus ride down to Mount Vernon to take on the #2 seeded Danville on Friday night.

YSN’s own, Steve Leslie, sat down with Kolten and Tyler this week at the Tiger’s Table to talk about the first round match up against Monroeville, what the boys did well and what they want to do moving forward to keep the momentum going, what their keys to victory are for this week, and so much more!

TIGERS BEGIN A NEW PLAYOFF PUSH

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Springfield kicked off their playoff journey in impressive fashion with a 35-21 victory over Monroeville, setting the stage for an exciting postseason run.

In the first quarter, Dante Gentile led the charge for Springfield, running for a 5-yard touchdown with 6:04 on the clock. Kaesen Kosek’s successful extra point made it 7-0 in favor of Springfield.

The second quarter saw Monroeville respond, as Evan Benfer dashed for a 23-yard touchdown run, and Landon Stein’s extra point tied the game at 7-7. However, Springfield wasn’t to be outdone, and Kolten Ruark connected with Sean Guerriero on a 17-yard touchdown pass with just 51 seconds left in the quarter. Kaesen Kosek’s extra point put Springfield ahead 14-7 at halftime.

Springfield continued to build their lead in the third quarter, with Dante Gentile scoring his second touchdown of the game, this time with a 3-yard run. Kosek’s extra point extended Springfield’s lead to 21-7.

The fourth quarter brought further excitement. Dante Gentile showcased his speed and agility with a spectacular 58-yard touchdown run, and Kosek’s extra point made it 28-7 in favor of Springfield. Monroeville mounted a comeback effort, with Evan Benfer connecting with Derek Ackerman for two touchdown passes, one from 12 yards out and another from 18 yards away. Landon Stein’s successful extra points narrowed the gap to 28-21.

However, Springfield’s Dante Gentile wasn’t finished yet, capping off his exceptional performance with a 59-yard touchdown run with 1:32 left in the game. Kaesen Kosek’s extra point sealed the victory with a final score of 35-21 in favor of Springfield.

This playoff victory marked a strong start to Springfield’s postseason journey, and it promises an exciting path ahead as they continue to chase their championship aspirations.
