BIG FINISH IN BULLDOG COUNTRY; EP WINS OVER EAGLES

EAST PALESTINE, OH- Bulldog Head Coach, Bill Stanton knew how teams would approach his offense this year.  “Stop number 11.”  What he had up his sleeve was that if he could carve out a scorer or two with the heart his team possesses, it could give teams fits.  To open up the new year, East Palestine did things a bit different in their 64-57 victory over United, they found confidence with the basketball, which in turn, made them a very dangerous team.

John Bertovich, AKA “Number 11”, was able to muster up 31 points in what was an impressive showing all around the floor.  Dazzling buckets on the inside, and shots from beyond the arc that would make Steph Curry blush.  However, it was the combination of Tyler Bistarkey, Brandon Turcola, Zion Figley, and Westin Jones that sealed the deal in this one.  Figley showed incredible heart and determination when he splashed a pair of three’s at crucial moments to keep the Bulldogs surging while finishing with 12 tallies on the night.  Bistarkey had 10 points, but his defense was his calling card on Friday, as he was tasked with defending 6’7 Nate Miller down low, and at one point had a rejection that sent the Dog Pound into a frenzy.  Brandon Turcola and Westin Jones combined for 11 points, but the hustle and drive throughout the game closed out the victory for East Palestine.

United continues to look for its first victory on the season.  Nate Miller finished with 22 for the Eagles on the inside, while Keaton Baker had 14.  Parker Berdine would finish with 6 on the night for the Eagles as well.

East Palestine (2-5) will now prep for EOAC leader, Columbiana on Tuesday in the Dog Pound.  Tip is set for 7pm, with Dan and Tim Figley on the call on YSN.

RUTLEDGE GOES FOR CAREER HIGH; DOGS EDGE UNITED

EAST PALESTINE, OH- When it comes to Christmas, it’s better to give than to receive.  For East Palestine Junior, Morgan Rutledge, she gave a Christmas performance her parents will never forget as she and her teammates outlasted EOAC rival United to the tune of 45-42 Monday evening.

In a game that came down to last-minute free-throws, the Lady Bulldogs cashed in diamonds when the pressure looked to burst pipes.

Rutledge posted a career-high 16 points in a physical game, controlling the paint against the Lady Eagles.  Payton Sherry had a double-double with a team-high 18 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals while Sophomore Paige Snyder continued to thrive with 11 tallies, 8 rebounds, and 3 rips for East Palestine.

For the Lady Eagles, Bailey Boosz had a game-high 23 points, while Morgan Briceland contributed 6.

Both teams will break for Christmas before they return to action.  East Palestine will welcome Springfield to town on December 30th, while United will have some time to regroup when they meet Lisbon on January 6th.

LANCERS TRAP EAGLES; UNITED FALLS TO NESHANNOCK

EAST PALESTINE, OH – Game three of the 2019 YSN Border Battle between Ohio and Pennsylvania teams, saw the United Golden Eagles face off against the Neshannock Lancers. Going into the game, the “battle” between Ohio and Pennsylvania was even at one game a piece, as the Lady Bulldogs of East Palestine won the first game for Ohio over the Wilmington Greyhounds. The Shenango Wildcats represented Pennsylvania in game two as they defeated the Campbell Memorial Red Devils.

The first quarter saw the Golden Eagles fight hard but trail 14-6. As the second quarter got underway, the Neshannock press also started to fire on all cylinders. The Lancers trapped United and forced some turnovers, which resulted in the Lancers taking a 42-20 lead into the half. The third quarter was much of the same for Coach Kadvan’s team as they couldn’t get the offense clicking. The fourth quarter saw the Golden Eagles continue to battle and never give up in the game, although they eventually would fall to Neshannock, 82-31.

The Neshannock Lancers were led by Russell Kwiat who finished with 21 points.

The United Golden Eagles were led by Keaton Baker with 10 points.

Up next for United is a home test against the Hornets of East Canton on Thursday, January 2nd.

THINGS ARE KEATON UP IN UNITED

HANOVERTON, OH- The youth movement is upon Eagle Nation, and there’s a Junior leading the charge for United this year.  The only returning letterman on an outstanding team, Keaton Baker has big shoes to fill when it comes to adding to the foundation of a stellar program in Hanoverton this year.  A program that seemingly is always in the thick of things in conference play now looks to the future in 2020.

Coach Kadvan must lean on his positive approach that his team appreciates and drives off.  However, it’s players like Baker that must provide a glimpse of the tradition and heritage with some new-school flashes of what could be in the years to come for the Blue and Gold.

We caught up with the junior bucket-filler for this week’s United Local Player Profile: THINGS ARE KEATON UP IN UNITED!
