URSULINE HAILS OVER HAWKEN

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio- The Ursuline Fighting Irish started their journey that will hopefully lead them back to Canton with a first round matchup at Stambaugh Stadium against the Hawken Hawks.

The third-seeded Irish wasted little time in tonight’s battle, marching down the field on their first drive, capping it off with a 6-yard touchdown run by Jack Ericson. A successful two-point conversion made it 8-0 Irish just over a minute-and-a-half into the ballgame. A 27-yard TD run by Ericson towards the to begin the second-quarter plus another two-point conversion gave Ursuline a 16-0 edge. The 14-seed Hawks did not go down easily though, as speedster Jordan Johnson took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the end zone as Hawken got on the board for the first time, making it 16-7. A 6-yard touchdown run by DC Ferrell as well as a 66-yard touchdown pass from Ericson to Marc Manning gave the Irish a 28-6 lead heading into the break.

The second half was dominated by Ursuline as well, as Christian Lynch got in on the scoring party on Ursuline’s opening possession of the second quarter, rushing the ball 47 yards to the end zone to make it 36-6 with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. A 25-yard pick-six by Tairan Davis was the icing on top of a matchup dominated by the Irish, as they came out victorious by a final score of 43-12.

Ursuline will host the Tallmadge Blue Devils next Friday night at 7:00 at Stambaugh Stadium as the look to continue on their quest towards Canton.

PLAYER OF THE GAME:

Jack Ericson did it all for the Irish offensively tonight, finding the end zone on three separate occasions, twice on the ground and once through the air. Ericson also caught a pass in the first half for Ursuline.

BURNEY’S THE BOSS

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Ursuline Irish have made it to Week 11 of the high school football season, and they hope that this is just the beginning of what could be a long playoff run. Senior Will Burney has been one of the biggest playmakers during his four years at Ursuline, and the Irish will need to lean on his leadership and experience throughout this playoff run. Will has over 400 yards receiving and 4 TD’s this year for Ursuline, while also being a game-wrecker on the defensive side of the ball.

In this week’s Player Profile, Will talks about the feeling of beating Mooney four years in a row, the current energy around the program, and more!

URSULINE OWNS THE NIGHT; HOLDS OFF MOONEY

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- There’s not much that Ursuline can do these days that they haven’t done before.  Last night was not one of those nights, as the Irish did defeat Cardinal Mooney for the fourth consecutive time- a feat that had not been accomplished in the nearly seven decades leading up to this year’s matchup by a final score of 13-7.

However, it wasn’t easy.

These games rarely are.

Ursuline came out looking like they were going to roll their cross-town rivals jumping out to an early 10-0 lead in the first quarter.  Jack Ericson scampered up the middle for 20-yards to put the Irish up 2 scores in the opening stanza, and the way it would remain all the way to the second half.

Coming out of the locker room, Mooney had a spark.  Following an electric kickoff return by the Cardinals, Junior QB Ashton O’Brien quickly connected with Alec Delsignore to get him involved in the offense, which would include a 15-yard strike from AOB to Delsignore to bring the game within 3.  O’Brien would finish 13-21 for 151 yards with that score, and three interceptions.

Ursuline would rack up 358 yards of offense, but was held to only one trip to the endzone in the contest- something that was out of the ordinary for this up-tempo offensive juggernaut.

Mooney would have opportunities to tie or take the lead throughout the second half, but the stout Irish defense led by Ty’Req Donlow would stomp out the flames that the Cardinals continued to fan.  Donlow supplied one of the biggest plays of the game late in the contest when he chased down Ashton O’Brien on a third and short for a loss of 13.

The Irish finish the season 8-2 and await finalization of the bracket with West Branch and Salem’s contest on Saturday night which has secondary point implications for Canfield and other teams in the region.  Mooney finishes a tough schedule at 4-6 and projects to be in the playoffs on the road next Friday night.

YSN will have both playoff games available along with many others with the Playoff Power Pass on October 28th.

URSULINE IRISH FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 9) WITH DAN REARDON

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Week 10 is upon us in the 2022 high school football season, and that only means one thing…it is time for the Holy War. Ursuline and Mooney will face off Friday night at Stambaugh Stadium for the 69 th time with Mooney leading the all-time series 42-23-3. This rivalry is one of the most well-known in the state, as there is so much history for both programs as they have won a combined 12 state titles in football. The Irish have had the upper hand as of late, winning the last three matchups between the two bitter rivals, including last year’s 43-12 victory en route to a state championship game appearance.

LURKIN’ LORENZO

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Ursuline Football team has seen a lot of new faces shine in big roles on this year’s squad, and junior Lorenzo Rohrbaugh has been one of those players who has stepped up. Rohrbaugh has played a key role on this year’s defense from the Linebacker position, clogging the gaps for the opponents trying to gain yardage. Rohrbaugh has helped this Ursuline defense hit its stride at the right time as the Irish have given up a combined 8 points in the last two games leading up to this week’s big matchup with Cardinal Mooney.

In this week’s Player Profile, Lorenzo talks about his junior season up to this point, this week’s big matchup with Mooney, and more!

URSULINE IRISH DUAL COACH’S CORNER WITH LIZ AND RYAN KELLY

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Friday nights in Northeast Ohio mean a lot to communities for a lot of different reasons, but the football teams get most of the shine. The Ursuline Irish cheerleaders have become just as big of a part of Friday nights as the football team itself, and Cheerleading advisor Liz Kelly has done a phenomenal job leading the way for this squad.

The Ursuline Football team has been known for much of this season with how explosive of an offense they have, but the defense for this year’s team has been equally as impressive. The Irish come into this week’s matchup with rival Cardinal Mooney after giving up a combined eight points in their last two matchups against VASJ and Youngstown East combined. Defensive Coordinator, Ryan Kelly, an Ursuline Football alum, knows just how important this week’s matchup with Cardinal Mooney is.

In this week’s coaches’ corner, Liz Kelly talks about the time that has to be put into every week during the season, what she enjoys the most about coaching the cheerleaders, Ryan talked about what to look forward to on Friday night, some of the standouts on this year’s team, and more!

ELECTRIC ERICSON

YOUNGSTOWN, OH -The Ursuline Football team had to replace a key piece of their 2021 squad that was less than a minute away from winning a state title, and that was the school’s all-time leading passer Brady Shannon. Shannon has moved on to the college ranks where he plays baseball at UCF, and the Irish have been blessed to have a new guy come in and fill those shoes so quickly in Jack Ericson. Ericson, a junior, started at Safety last year for the 11-4 team, but moving to quarterback was a whole different job. From opening night against Brookfield to this week’s clash with Cardinal Mooney, Jack has shown that he has the ability to lead the Irish on another deep playoff run in 2022.

In this week’s Player Profile brought to you by the Golden Dawn, Jack talks about the importance of this week’s matchup, what it has been like being the quarterback of this team this season, and more!
