LIONS PAW THEIR PATH TO THE SECTIONAL FINALS

BROOKFIELD OH- Heartland Christian got a big boost on Tuesday night to propel them past Warren JFK in four sets and advance them to the next round. (25-18 16-25 25-15 25-22)

Lauren Miasek had a great night for the Lions leading the way in kills with 14. She also served up 6 aces. Emma Hall finished with 6 kills, and led the defense with 27 digs. Jordan Webb contributed 26 digs. Bella Drokin set up the offense well finishing with an impressive 27 assists.

Chloe Coates led the Eagles with 10 kills on the night. She came two digs away from a double double finishing with 8. Ellie Rinck led the defense with 13 digs in the back row. Katie Ruggieri ran the offense totaling in 22 assists.

Heartland advances to the sectional final where they’ll meet second seeded Western Reserve. That game is set for Thursday at 6:00 at Western Reserve.

JFK ROUTS THE ROVERS

ROOTSTOWN OH- There was never a question about who the better team was on Friday between Warren JFK, and Rootstown. The Eagles scored 14 points in each of the first three quarters to stomp to a 48-7 win. Antwan Brown set the tone with a 66 yard touchdown to put the Eagles on the board. It was all smooth sailing from there.

Next week the 4-2 Eagles will continue their season against St Thomas Aquinas.

EAGLES CANT GRASP MOGADORE AT THE END

WARREN OH-. The visiting Mogadore Wildcats barely hold off the home town Warren JFK Eagles as they just get by winning by just two points 16-14.

The Mogadore offense was led by quarterback Will Butler who helped the Wildcats put up 16 points against the strong Eagles defense.

On the flip side of the ball the Eagles were led by quarterback Caleb Hadley and runningback/wide receiver Antwan Brown who broke away for a couple of huge runs to set up multiple scores for the eagles offense as the game came down to the final drive where Hadley’s pass just bounced off of the hands of an open receiver and the eagles lose a tough one to the Mogadore Wildcats 16-14.

CLIPPERS KEEP JFK GUESSING

COLUMBIANA OH- The Columbiana Clippers have been busy this week, after a strong win on Saturday, the Clippers quickly turned around to host Warren JFK. The quick turnaround didn’t cause any issues, as Columbiana swept the Eagles. (25-9 25-6 25-10)

Tori Long had a great night for the Clippers collecting 8 kills, and 9 aces. She also finished with a pair of digs. Julia Rapp was also a big contributor on offense with 7 kills. Liv Cmil led the Clippers defense with 13 digs. Toni Ross set up the offense well, finishing with 14 assists.

Columbiana will remain at home on Tuesday as they return to league action hosting Valley Christian. Warren JFK will travel to St Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday.

GARFIELD PROVES TOO MUCH FOR EAGLES

WARREN OH- Garfield has had Warren JFK’s number for a couple of years now, and that would not change on Friday night. Garfield used a steady dose of Anthony Demma to outscore JFK 28-14.

Demma would end up scoring three touchdowns for the G-Men on 137 yards rushing including a 57 yard burst to erase any doubt late in the game.

JFK’s offense finally found a rhythm in the fourth quarter as Caleb Hadley and Antwan Brown both found the endzone in the final frame. Garfield answered both scores to stay ahead.

Garfield head coach Mike Moser earned his 55th win to become the winningest coach in the program.

Garfield remains undefeated and will host LaBrae next week. JFK hits the road traveling to Conneaut.

JFK STANDS TALL AGAINST BLUE DEVILS

WARREN OH- The reigning state runner up JFK Eagles continued to look impressive in the young season on Saturday night. After storming out to a big lead, they were able to stand tall during a second half Western Reserve wave. JFK held on to win 44-28.

Chris Campana led the Eagles ground attack running for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns on 15 carries. Caleb Hadley chipped in running for 80 yards and a touchdown. Hadley wasn’t asked to throw a ton, but when he was, he was efficient. He went 7-8 for 123 yards through the air with a touchdown.

Per usual David Altiere did a lot of work on the ground. He ran for 84 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. One of those carries was a 40 yard scamper for a score. He was helped out greatly by Dominic Ricciardi who ran for 97 yards and two touchdowns.

JFK will look to continue their win streak in Week 3 as they host Garfield. Garfield beat the Eagles last season, so JFK will have revenge on their mind. Western Reserve’s schedule won’t get any easier. They look to bounce back against Brookfield in Week 3.

JFK DOESN’T MISS A BEAT

CHAMPION, OH – The Warren JFK Eagles came into Friday night’s game attempting to match the ferocity of last season’s reign. Many wondered how they would adapt to new kids stepping up on the turf to take the place of superstars like Hollobaugh and Likens from last year’s past team. Well with the likes of Brown, Mauro, and Rivera, I don’t believe they’ll need to worry too much. Champion put up a great fight all game, however the blue storm’s defense was simply too powerful. The Eagles took the game 48-6, and scored 27 points in the first half.

Antwan Brown of the Eagles had three rushing touchdowns, along with one kickoff return touchdown after Champion’s only score of the day. Brown was the lead rusher for the team, and made quite the debut for the team. Midway through the game, he suffered an ankle injury that seemed like he would be out for the majority of the game. He proceeded to come back on the field for the kickoff from Champion, where he clutched the ball from the air and took it about 75 yards to the house. After the touchdown, he seemed to tweet it once again, and that is where he called it quits for the rest of the game. Michael Mauro of the Eagles and Abram Rivera had scores of their own, Rivera scoring a 2 point conversion after a Brown rush in the end zone. Mauro in the first half picked off QB Joey Fell, which led to a Brown TD. On the other side of the ball, the Golden Flashes’ Mason Sabo was the only one with points on the board for the day. Champion tried their hardest to swing momentum back into the game, but it was too little too late.

Champion will be playing Rootstown next Friday, August 27, and Warren JFK will be home playing Western Reserve that same day.

WITH ICE RUNNING THROUGH HIS VEINS

WARREN, OH- It’s a rarity to encounter a young student-athlete that “the moment” never outgrows.  Ladies and Gentlemen: Let us reintroduce Warren JFK’s Michael Mauro.  The junior multi-sport party starter with more ice running through him than a snowplow on a cold day in February.

The kid is unshakable.

He’s a once-in-a-lifetime type leader, who knows what to say, and when to say it.  Oh, and by the way, he walks the walk as well.  Typically suited to come through in clutch situations in football with his relentless pursuit to find the sticks, Mauro has become a bulldog with a nose for the goal line as well.  However, this baseball season, Mauro became the voice of reason as well as one of the 11 young men who held the trophy high in the state’s final baseball game.

Mauro helped propel the Eagles to their first-ever baseball state title and learned some important lessons along the way that will help him push towards gold this fall as well.

We caught up with “The Ice Man” Michael Mauro for this week’s Warren JFK Player Profile!
