BOARDMAN CLOCKS RUN ON WYME TIME

BOARDMAN OH- A pitching staff is only as good as their catcher. It’s a detail about the sport of softball that is often overlooked. When you put a player behind the plate, it’s not just someone who can catch a fastball, they have lead the infield, communicate perfectly, know all their pitchers, and be able to keep wild pitches in front of their body. Boardman has another year with a solid backstop in junior Maddie Wymer.

Maddie is now in her second season as the consistent varsity catcher.  This year is unique for Maddie though because Boardman features three pitchers that rotate in the circle. At the high schools, most schools have 1 or 2 they use consistently, however Wymer is able to handle a whole staff.  Each pitcher has their own personal strengths and weaknesses that Maddie has to always keep in the back of her mind. The Spartans can pitch any of them at anytime. If coach Mootz was asked he’d probably tell you how easy Maddie makes it to have a three pitcher rotation.

Wymer is having a great year at the plate as well.  She is currently second on the team in batting average with a .413 clip so far.  Wymer is also second on the team in RBI with 13.  Wymer uses patience at the plate her .462 on base percentage proves that.

Wymer took the time to talk with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig about her junior season. She also talks about the mental aspect of her game, how she manages a pitching staff, and much more. Check out the latest Boardman softball Player Profile exclusively on YSN!
