CANFIELD DOESN’T GIVE THE SPARTANS AN INCH

Malena Toth struck out 10 batters as the starting pitcher led Canfield past Boardman 10-0 on Saturday at Hoban’s softball field. Toth allowed three hits and zero runs over five innings while walking two.

Canfield scored seven runs in the second inning on the way to victory. Sami Economous singled, scoring two runs, Alexa Ignazio laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring one run, Marina Koenig doubled, scoring one run, Jenna Triver tripled, scoring one run, Faith Morell singled, scoring one run, and Leah Figueroa doubled, scoring one run. A single by Triveri extended the the Cardinals lead to 9-0 in the bottom of the third inning.

Gabi Sferra opened the game for Boardman. She surrendered two hits and five runs over one and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking two.

Triveri and Figueroa each collected two hits for Canfield. Triveri went 2-for-3 at the plate as the left-handed hitter led the team with three runs batted in. The team had patience at the plate, piling up five walks for the game. Toth and Economous led the team with two walks each. Canfield didn’t commit a single error in the field. Figueroa had the most chances in the field with 10.

Olivia LaCivita, Maddie Wymer, and Ava Freeborough each collected one hit for Boardman on the day.
