CARDINALS BEAT THEIR BIGGEST RIVALS TO RAISE THE TROPHY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Is there any better feeling than being able to get a win over your rival to win a championship? That’s a question that Canfield can now answer as the Cardinals beat Poland for the second time this season to win a district championship. Malena Toth was masterful, shutting out the Bulldogs 4-0.

Maddie Angelo did serious damage out of the three spot on the night. She went 2-3 with a HR pair of RBI to lead the offense. Gianna Pannunzio also had multiple hits going 2-3 with a RBI.  Bella Kennedy went 1-3 with a run scored as well.

Toth struck out 13 batters on her way to a shut out win.  She also went the game without a walk while only giving up 3 hits. It took only 95 pitches to get through the game.

Three different players collected hits for Poland. Connie Cougras got the Bulldog’s first hit of the game in the fourth.  Leanne Williams, and Mary Brant both followed up with base hits later in the game.

Katie McDonald pitched the complete game for Poland giving up 4 runs on 7 hits and striking out 3. She stayed away from free passes as she didn’t walk a single batter.

Canfield advances to the regional semifinals on Wednesday where they’ll meet Wooster Triway who was state runner up last season. That game will be at Nordonia, and the first pitch is scheduled for 2:00.
