LADY SPARTANS TOPPLE MOONEY

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- In a thrilling matchup that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Boardman girls’ basketball team soared to victory against Cardinal Mooney High School with a decisive score of 53-39. The clash between these two rivals showcased the Spartans’ prowess and determination on the court.

From the opening tip-off, it was evident that both teams came prepared to battle for supremacy. However, it was the Spartans who seized control early on, setting the tone for the game with their relentless offensive and defensive efforts.

The scoreboard tells a story of resilience and teamwork for Boardman High School. Throughout the game, they displayed remarkable cohesion and balanced scoring, with four players reaching double figures. Leading the charge was freshman sensation Mikayla Rivera, whose stellar performance off the bench saw her net 12 crucial points, including a flawless 5-5 from the free-throw line.

Mackenzie Riccitelli showcased her all-around skills, contributing 11 points along with an impressive 5 steals, demonstrating her impact on both ends of the court. Meanwhile, Sarah Bero’s commanding presence in the paint yielded 10 points and 7 rebounds, showcasing her versatility and determination.

MY OH MYER

COLUMBIANA OH- In her first year as a varsity starter, Crestview’s junior Myer Miller has embraced the challenge after limited varsity time last season. The leap to a starting role was significant, but Myer proved she was up for it.

During the opening game of the season, Myer faced nerves but conquered them with a game-sealing three-pointer at Springfield. This pivotal moment marked her ability to rise to the occasion under pressure.

Myer attributes her growing confidence to the unwavering support of her coaches and teammates. Their encouragement has played a crucial role in her development on and off the court.

Known for her fun-loving nature, Myer maintains a sense of looseness on the floor. This characteristic not only adds to the team’s dynamics but also allows her to perform at her best when it matters most.

As she observes the team leaders, Myer recognizes the valuable lessons she can learn. Watching them closely will undoubtedly contribute to her growth, shaping her into a fantastic leader as she progresses into a senior role next season. CANFIELD CAUSES CONFERENCE CHAOS

CANFIELD OH- The All American Conference (AAC) in high school  basketball might as well be call the wild west with constant conference shootouts and how often there happens to be a new sheriff in town atop the conference standings! On the girls side of the AAC this season, it has been a wild ride to this point with multiple teams looking for the top spot in the conference. On Wednesday night, the conference birds battled it out when The Austintown-Fitch Falcons took the short trip down the road to matchup with The Canfield Cardinals!

A low scoring first half of play commenced and both teams prioritized defense against one another as points were at a premium through the first 16 minutes. Both teams struggled to get points in the first half, unless your name was Grace McQuiston! The Cardinals senior put up 10 of the 15 points for Canfield in the first half as the two teams were all knotted up 15-15 at the halftime buzzer.

After an even first half, The Cardinals separated themselves from Fitch as seven turnovers from The Falcons in the third turned into Canfield outsourcing Fitch 15-7 in the quarter to take a 30-22 lead into the fourth! Keeping the pace the following quarter, Canfield would emerge a bucket better than Austintown in the fourthat 16-13 in the quarter to win the ballgame by a final of 46-35.

Players of the Game went to both Grace McQuiston and Camryn Hritz as McQuiston finished with 17 points and provided big time shots in big time moments, while Hritz finished with 12 points and established herself as a rebounding force in the second half! For Fitch, they were led offensively by Ayla Ray who had 13 points.

Canfield (10-6, 3-3) will stay in conference action when they host Howland (12-4, 2-2) on Saturday, January 27th with a 7 p.m. tip-off. Fitch (11-5, 3-2) will now travel to their rival Boardman (12-4, 4-1) for a big matchup in the AAC, also on Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. tip-off. EAGLES STUMBLE IN CANTON

CANTON OH- Despite a valiant effort, Warren JFK faced a tough challenge in Canton Central Catholic on Tuesday, falling 70-56 after a long journey.

Jaden Rishel led JFK’s scoring with 15 points, closely followed by Nick Ryan with 14 and Michael Condoleon with 13. Henry Phillips contributed 7 points to the effort.

With a 12-2 record, JFK looks to bounce back on Friday during another road matchup against Mogadore.

URSULINE COMMANDS RESPECT IN THE STEEL VALLEY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- In a commanding performance on Wednesday night, Ursuline dominated their Steel Valley rival Chaney, securing a decisive 75-41 victory.

Lily Scott led Ursuline’s scoring with 18 points, followed by Julie Lee with 15, Carly Casey with 13, Kennedy Carpenter with 12, and Meredith Gray with 10.

Despite a notable 29-point effort from Alyssa Brown, Ursuline’s collective strength proved too much for Chaney to handle.

Ursuline (9-8) will move on to play Canfiekd at home on Monday.  Chaney (11-7) will try to bounce back on Monday as they travel to Aquinas.

SALEM CANT GET PAST THE DUKES

SALEM OH- In a hard-fought battle, Salem displayed resilience against Marlington on Wednesday night but succumbed to the Dukes with a final score of 59-50.

Leading the offensive efforts for Salem were Rylee Hutton with an impressive 21 points and Lauryn Barton contributing 16 points. However, Marlington’s Chelsea Evanich had an outstanding performance, scoring a remarkable 36 points for the Dukes.

Salem, with a season record of 6-10, looks to bounce back as they prepare for their next game on Saturday, where they will host Poland. The upcoming match will also serve as their senior day celebration, honoring three seniors.

EAGLES SPREAD THEIR WINGS AGAINST AQUINAS

WARREN OH- In another convincing performance, JFK soared to victory on Wednesday, defeating St. Thomas Aquinas with a final score of 56-46.

Key contributors for JFK included Didi Ryan, leading the scoring with an impressive 19 points, while Ava Darney and Gianna Pompelia each added 14 points to secure the win.

With this triumph, JFK maintains their impressive season record at 12-3. The team looks to continue their success as they host Bristol in their upcoming game on Monday.

WEST BRANCH ARE THE WARRIORS ON TOP

Beloit, OH-
On Wednesday night, West Branch 13-2 (8-0 EBC) hosted Carrollton who was coming in with a really solid 13-3 (6-2 EBC) record. In the matchup earlier in the year, Coach Deshields and the Warriors had their way with Carrollton. Tonight’s game was much the same as West Branch played outstanding both offensively and defensively. The final score was a team effort decisive 59-23 win 

 

Livvie Showalter was the big performer of the game leading the Warriors in scoring with 19 points. Her teammates set her up for some great opportunities to score, and she capitalized on the open shots. Sophie Gregory was also in double figures with 11. Gregory’s defense and offensive passing played a pivotal role in the Warriors success. Chloe Dennisson tallied 7 points, while Carter Shepard had 6. It was a collective effort by the team throughout the game as they played unselfishly. 

 

Although Carrollton was disappointed with the outcome of the score, they did have one bright spot. Warrior Guard Hillari Baker scored her 1,000th career point. She finished the game with 10. West Branch made it tough for Carrollton to score the entire game with their pressure defense. Brae Roudebush knocked down 2 threes and finished with 6 points.

 

With the win West Branch improves to 14-2 (9-0 inside the EBC), and they are now the outright EBC champions. Catch the Warriors back in action on Saturday at Struthers. Carrollton drops to 13-4 (6-3 EBC) with the loss. They will look to bounce back on Saturday at home vs Sandy Valley.
