SPRINGFIELD GIRLS SOCCER COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH JUSTIN KOSEK

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Springfield is one of the most successful girls soccer programs the area has seen in the last two seasons. The Tigers have only lost three games in two years. The Tigers are coming off a 15-1 season, but a disappointing ending, losing to United 2-0 in the District semifinals. Springfield returns seven starters from a season ago, two of which were named 1st team all district in 2020. They do lose the YDSSCA Division III Player of the Year in Kylee Kosek. The core is still there and that gives head coach Justin Kosek reasons to be optimistic. Coach Kosek is 18 wins away from 100 in his career, and a deep tournament run might just get him there.

Coach Kosek was kind enough to stop by YSN’s Running Point this week to preview the 2021 season. He talks with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about his own journey to be a head coach, building team chemistry, and much more. Earn your stripes by checking out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Justin Kosek.

COLUMBIANA VOLLEYBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH JENNIFER MARTIN

COLUMBIANA OH- The Clippers volleyball program is coming of a very impressive 20 win season in 2020. They made it all the way to the district finals where they eventually fell to mineral Ridge. The Clippers lost 4 seniors, which may not sound like a ton but statistically they lost over 300 kills, their team leader in digs, and their team leader in assists. So yes, there are some key parts missing for the Clippers coming into the new season, but they do return their team leader in kills in Tori Long who finished 2020 with 229 kills. URSULINE SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER: A NEW SOFTBALL U

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- For the last 19 years, Coach Mike Kernan has dubbed Ursuline Softball “Softball U” and now the right opportunity has come along for the longtime captain of the Lady Irish Ship to advance his career to the next level.

For the first time in nearly two decades, Mike Kernan will not be in the third base coach box for Ursuline, but rather will pack his bags and head down to Ave Maria University in Florida to accept their head coaching position.

A shock for many in the local ranks, Kernan has invested time, and many resources to bring championships back to Ursuline, and the teams he had during his tenure.  He sent many young ladies on to top programs around the country to not only continue their careers but gain an education along the way to become outstanding outside the lines as well.

To be frank, Kernan was a game-changer for local softball.

It took the right situation to pull Coach K away from the program he’s helped build, but with every door closing, a new one opens.  It was imperative to Kernan to not leave behind a program with an empty cupboard, but instead, he leaves a program that can compete for a state title as early as next year.

We at YSN are honored to feature an exclusive sit down with Coach as his final appearance as the Ursuline Skipper in this week’s Ursuline Softball Coach’s Corner: A New Softball U.
