STRUTHERS, OH – Coming off a district championship for the ages, head coach Mike Wernicki and the Struthers Wildcats are eager and hungry to keep on playing! The ‘Cats defeated Chardon on Saturday night 116-108 in double overtime to win the district and advance to the regional semi-finals where they will meet up with Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish at Barberton on Thursday night.

YSN’s own, Steve Leslie, caught up with Coach Wernicki this week via video chat to discuss the Wildcats playoff run so far, the thrilling double overtime victory over Chardon, what the Wildcats need to do to win and advance against Akron SVSM, and much much more!

MCDONALD, OH – The Lady Blue Devils are back in the OHSAA State FInal Four for the first time since 199 and head coach Tony Matisi, Mike Kollar, and the team are all excited and eager to hit the hardwood in Dayton on Thursday afternoon! The Lady Blue Devils defeated Shadyside 58-50 to capture the regional championship on Saturday afternoon to set up a final four match up with Waterford.

YSN’s own, Steve Leslie, had the opportunity to sit down with Coach Matisi and Coach Kollar this week via video chat to discuss the regional championship game, the incredible run that McDonald is currently on, what this final four berth means to the community, the team, and them, as well as what the Lady Blue Devils need to do to advance to the state championship game.

CARDINAL MOONEY BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 3) WITH CAREY PALERMO

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Coming off a thrilling district championship game victory, head coach Carey Palermo and the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals are eager and ready to take on the regional semi-finals! The Cards defeated Waterloo in overtime, 58-55, in that district championship game on a Michael Pelini three with 1.8 seconds remaining and they will now advance to the regional semi-finals to take on Cleveland Heights Lutheran East on Tuesday night!

SOUTH RANGE GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 9) WITH JEFF FISHEL

CANFIELD OH- One step closer. Although the Raiders have kept the day by day mentality, they have also been clear that getting to the state tournaments in Dayton felt like a tangible goal. Well, after Tuesday night’s 51-44 win over Warrensville Heights, the Raiders find themselves one win away from a trip to Dayton. People on the outside have been expecting this since the end of last season after the Raiders were just a few plays away from getting to state. Returning virtually everyone, the expectations were real. Those messages and expectations were kept away from th team though, that is until now when the day by day mentality has gotten them to a regional final. The Raiders will play Waynedale for a trip to Dayton on Saturday at 1:30 at Cuyahoga Falls High School.

Jeff Fishel caught up with Anthony Hartwig again this week to recap the regional semifinal win over Warrensville Heights. Also discussed in this episode is a preview of the regional championship, what it took for the Raiders to get here, and much more. STRUTHERS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 5) WITH MIKE WERNICKI

STRUTHERS OH- 25 games later, and yes the Wildcats are still undefeated. Struthers has had a remarkable season to this point, but as head coach Mike WernIcki says in this episode the story has not come to a conclusion. The Wildcats have punched their ticket to a district championship with a big win over fellow Wildcats, Canton South. Struthers can now look ahead to facing the Cinderella story of the bracket Chardon who won another road game upsetting Canfield.

Before the Canton South game, coach WernIcki called in to Running Point to give Ron Potesta and Anthony Hartwig an update on the Wildcats. YSU BASEBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH DAN BERTOLINI

YOUNGSTOWN OH- YSU is coming off a week where they may have only gathered one win in the win column, but they definitely opened some eyes with their performance on the field. They played four games in Louisiana. Two against LSU, and two against Nichols State. The Penguins won one game on the weekend, on Sunday they salvaged the series with a win over Nichols 7-4. They competed well against 11th ranked LSU, and in the second game against the Tigers, they needed a walk off home run to beat the Guins.

SOUTH RANGE GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 8) WITH JEFF FISHEL

CANFIELD OH- We are one step closer to the girls basketball state tournament. Four YSN teams are still alive on their run to Dayton. South Range, Poland, Western Reserve, and McDonald. South Range is making their second straight trip to Cuyahoga Falls, and their third in four seasons.

The Raiders won their district championship 41-20 over Brookfield. Last season, the Raiders won the regional semifinal against Champion, and lost the regional final game to Elyria Catholic. South Range will look to take the next step this season, as they take on Warrensville Heights on Tuesday night at 6:15.

Poland is making their second trip to regionals in the last three seasons. They won their district championship game 40-38 over Marlington. In their last rip to regionals, Poland won their regional semifinal game against Akron Buchtel, and lost the regional final to Akron St Vincent St Mary. They will try to take the next step this season, as they match up with Perry in the regional semifinal Tuesday night at 8:15.

Raider head coach Jeff Fishel and Poland head coach Nick Blanch joined each other in this special edition of Coach’s Corner to preview both of their regional semifinal games. LOUISVILLE BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH TOM SIEGFRIED

LOUISVILLE OH- Louisville was a team fortunate enough this season to get all 22 games in their regular season slate. They finished with a record of 13-9 and have plenty of reasons to be optimistic in the tournament. The Leopards opened tournament play with a dominant 63-44 win over NDCL. They then had to go on the road to face seventh seeded Salem. The Leopards did go on the road and upset the Quakers 75-61 to advance to the district semifinals where they’ll have to travel again to Poland.

Louisville head coach Tom Siegfried took the time to call in to YSN’s Running Point this week ahead of their win over Salem. He talks with Ron Potesta about playing all 22 games on their schedule, previews the matchup with Salem, and much more. POLAND GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 8) WITH NICK BLANCH

POLAND OH- DO YOU BELIEVE IT?!?! Poland snatched victory right out of the jaws of defeat on Wednesday in the district semifinals against West Geauga. Coach Nick Blanch isn’t naïve about the fact that luck was definitely on the Bulldogs side. However, he was proud of his team’s effort and ability to never stop fighting. It all worked out for a win, and now Poland moves on to play Marlington in the district championship on Saturday at 7:00​.
Coach Blanch took the time to catch up with Anthony Hartwig this week to recap his team’s exciting win over West Geauga, and to preview the championship matchup with Marlington.
