NEWTON FALLS GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MARK BAKER

NEWTON FALLS OH- Newton Falls has been one of the highlights of area girls basketball the last couple years. Just three seasons ago, they were in the regional finals and lost in three overtimes to Elyria Catholic. Now that those freshman are now seniors, the goals could not be higher for the Tigers. They came in to Thursday with 2 losses in the MVAC, both to Brookfield. They suffered a tough loss on Thursday night however, dropping a 37-27 contest to Crestview. The Tigers will host Heartland Christian on Saturday.

Tiger coach Mark Baker still has high goals for his squad. They are senior led, and poised to make some waves as the 3 seed in Division 4. Mark called in to YSN’s Running Point this week to catch up with Ron Potesta, and Anthony Hartwig. They talk about his senior leaders, being a teacher with the student athletes, and much more. BROOKFIELD GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH KEN FORSYTHE

BROOKFIELD OH- The young Brookfield Warriors team has soared past expectations this season. The Warriors have run to a 12-1 record, and they are 7-1 in the MVAC Gray Tier. Brookfield is coming off an impressive two point win against Newton Falls where they gave the Tigers their second loss in the league. However, the Warriors fell to Champion on Thursday night 39-29. The Warriors will need to bounce back as they continue through the second half of their MVAC schedule.

Ken Forsythe head coach of the Warriors took the time to call in to YSN’s Running Point to tell us about his team and his season. He talked with Anthony Hartwig and Ron Potesta about going through COVID, his young talent, and much more. STRUTHERS WILDCATS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 4) WITH MIKE WERNICKI

STRUTHERS, OH – Head coach Mike Wernicki and the Struthers Wildcats are off to an undefeated start as they are currently 17-0 overall and 9-0 in the NE8 conference! The ‘Cats took the floor last night in a non-conference game against Warren JFK and they came out with an impressive 74-57 victory. Struthers will get back at it on Friday night as they Hubbard Eagles will invade the Fieldhouse in hopes of giving the Wildcats their first loss on the season.

YSN’s own, Steve Leslie, was able to sit down via video chat this week with Coach Wernicki to talk about how special this team truly is as the Cats are looking to achieve their preseason goals, what the “secret” is to how the Wildcats are playing such a high level of basketball, what he and his staff are doing to maintain the focus of everyone in the program to keep winning, what his thoughts are on the playoff voting and where Struthers might land in the bracket, and much much more!

POLAND GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 5) WITH NICK BLANCH

POLAND OH- It has been another successful week for Poland as they continue their long win streak. The Bulldogs have won 14 in a row and sit at 14-1 heading in to the week. Poland’s last win was a 67-26 win over Hubbard. This week Poland has a late add of Liberty on Wednesday, and a huge matchup with South Range on Thursday.

Speaking of South Range, the Raiders head coach Jeff Fishel crashed the party this week and became a special guest. These two coaches have formed a strong friendship over the last two seasons and the mutual respect they have for one another is displayed in this week’s episode as both coaches preview Thursday’s clash.

MCDONALD BLUE DEVILS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 3) WITH JAMES FRANCESCHELLI

MCDONALD, OH – The McDonald Blue Devils and head coach, Jimmy Franceschelli, seem to be playing near-perfect basketball right now as they currently 14-0 overall and 8-0 in the MVAC! The Blue Devils will look to put their winning streak on the line this week as they will travel to their “neighbors” to take on the Mineral Ridge Rams on Friday night!

YSN’s own, D.J. Yokley, was able to sit down with Coach Franceschelli this week via video chat to discuss the fourteen game winning streak, the huge win over Waterloo last week, his outlook for the conference match up Friday with the Rams, and what the Blue Devils have to do to keep taking care of business and keep winning!

POLAND OH- Earlier this week Ken Grisdale became just the 47th coach in the state of Ohio to get to 500 career wins. In his 28 years with the Bulldogs he has seen many players come and go, and has found a fountain of success. He has won the Mahoning Valley Coach’s Association Coach of the Year award 18 times. Poland has two wins over Jefferson under their belt this week and will look to honor their seniors with a win on Saturday night against Liberty on senior night.

BOARDMAN OH- The Lady Spartans come in to the 20202-2021 season under new management. Brett Green ventures in to a new job as as the head coach of the Spartans. A young team is getting visibly better each time they step on the court. Starting to find an identity on the offensive side has been critical to their success. The Spartans are currently on a temporary shut down due to COVID concerns, but when they return to action they’ll be a dangerous team to deal with.

However, he says the girls play every night for their coach and when he finally got back to practice it was a welcomed sight. McDonald is 1-1 on the week, dropping a three point contest against West Branch, and dominating Mineral Ridge.
