POLAND GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH (EP 7) WITH NICK BLANCH

POLAND OH- It is officially tournament time in Poland for the girls basketball program. The Lady Bulldogs finished the regular season by falling to South Range in the team’s second matchup of the year. Splitting with the Raiders secured that both teams would share the top spot in the NE8. It snapped Poland’s 40 game winning streak inside the NE8. Poland then moved on to tournaments where they won their opening game against Jefferson 53-35. Poland will now play West Geauga in the district semifinals on Wednesday.

Head Coach Nick Blanch caught up with Anthony Hartwig to update us on the Lady Bulldogs. In this episode we hear about the NE8 streak coming to an end, what makes tournament time different, and so much more. Get your fill of Poland basketball with Episode 7 of Coach’s Corner with Nick Blanch.

UNITED COMPLETES COMEBACK ON SENIOR NIGHT

HANOVERTON OH- United brought a four game win streak in to Monday night’s contest with Jackson Milton, and looked to keep it alive. The Eagles have been winning close games left and right this season, and Monday would be no different. After trailing 36-29 going into the final frame, United outscored the Jays 18-9 to win on senior night 47-45.

Freshman Grace Knight led the way for the Eagles scoring 13 points. Madison Kibler, and Mickey Shasteen both had 8.

Chelsea Williams had a game-high 16 points to lead the Blue Jays. Kelsie Taylor, and Ava Darney both finished with 8.

United will return to play January 4th as they’ll host Leetonia.

WARRIORS DROP A HEARTBREAKER TO MARLINGTON

BELOIT OH-It was a big EBC clash on Friday night that just may be the key in who finishes on top at the end of the season.  The West Branch Warriors dropped a tough 1 point contest to the Dukes of Marlington 40 -39. It was the Warriors second loss of the season.

The Warriors led most of the game, but Marlington blew the doors open in the fourth quarter. They outscored the Warriors 16-4 in the final frame to secure the one point win.

Senior Dru DeShields led the now 4-2 Warriors with 16 points  Josh Gregory and Nick Wilson had 8 points each.

West Branch travels to Lake Center Christian on Tuesday night.

VULETICH SIGNS WITH RMU

BERLIN CENTER, OH- The long wait is over.  Since Dani Vuletich laced up a pair of sneakers and dribbled a basketball she’s been waiting for the moment to make herself official as a college basketball player.  On Veterans Day-2020 in front of her teammates, family, friends, and administrators- she made her dreams come true.

The 6’3 dynamic multi-sport athlete chose Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania to call home for the foreseeable future.

Vuletich joined the 1000 point club as a junior, and looks to break the all-time scoring record at Western Reserve in her senior campaign.

Best of luck to Dani in her senior season, as well as all of her future endeavors.  We’ll be cheering you on at YSN!

CARTER CARVES OUT RECORD; TIGERS ROLL

WELLSVILLE, OH- After close losses in the opening round of the playoffs for both Valley Christian and Wellsville, the Tigers had no trouble taking down the Eagles in Week 8 to even up their record at 4-4. In doing so, senior quarterback Troy Carter became Wellsville’s all-time passing leader.

The Eagles got on the board first at the 7:30 mark of the first quarter after Jon’Tae Pabellon ran in a touchdown on a short field provided by the Eagles special teams unit. The Tigers responded with their own touchdown with just eight seconds remaining in the first quarter when Carter found his favorite big-play target, Jr. Valen Krzyston, for a 31-yard touchdown pass. Kicker Casey Lemasters added the extra point to tie things up. From there, it was all Tigers.

Wellsville added another Carter to Krzyston touchdown pass, but this time it was Garrett Krzyston for an eight-yard score. After a bad snap on the extra point attempt, Carter took things into his own hands by finding his way into the end-zone for a 15-7 lead. Lemasters added in a 29-yard field goal on the last play of the first half, while sophomore fullback Gavin Koontz took a  three-yard plunge into the end zone in the third quarter to round out the scoring for both teams.

Carter threw for 152 yards on the night, giving him 1,386 total yards for the season, and 3,863 yards for his career. That number breaks his uncle – and Wellsville Offensive Coordinator – Shawn Carter’s 25-year-old record of 3,765 yards. Carter has 14 touchdown passes, 3 total two-point conversions, and three touchdown runs on the season.

Next week, Wellsville is at Edison and will finish up 2020 with a home game versus rival Toronto in two weeks.

  • The Wellsville defense was a different team this week. After allowing 396 yards to Buckeye Central, the Tigers held Valley Christian to 139 total yards and holding the Eagles to just 2/10 on third & 4th down conversions.
  • Because of injuries and an ejection, Valley Christian was down to its third-string quarterback for the second half.
  • Two Valley Christian players were ejected.
  • The Tigers were flagged five times for 55 yards, while the Eagles were flagged 10 times for 110 yards.
  • The Tigers held the ball for almost 30 minutes on offense and held a 20-8 first down edge.
  • Lemaster is on a tear the last three games, going 11/11 on extra points and field goal attempts combined.

RIDGE RAMS THEIR WAY PAST TROJANS

SEBRING, OH- One name, three words you’re going to want to remember: Jalen Royal-Eiland.  That’s because Friday night against Sebring the King of Ridge lit up the scoreboard like a Christmas Tree on the way to a 53-14 victory.

JRE took not one, but two kickoffs back to the house in the first quarter to give Mineral Ridge the early advantage- and one they wouldn’t return.  Mineral Ridge in addition to a pair of kickoff returns, was a pair of safety’s on defense that provided the confidence for the Rams against Sebring.

Shakir Perkins rushed for 71 yards on the night that included a 50-yard TD.  Mark Bunch passed for 171 yards on 9 completions and had a pair of scores.

For Sebring, Noah Fredrick had 99 yards on the ground, while senior Cody Horning scored from 5 yards out to cut into the score late.
