MESSAGE RECEIVED; BOARDMAN WALKS OFF CANFIELD

BOARDMAN, OH- Less than 24 hours after the YSN Power Rankings were released for baseball, the Boardman Spartans took their frustration out on top-ranked Canfield after feeling like they were snubbed by the voters.

A walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning propelled Boardman to a decisive, dramatic victory over Canfield, 3-2.  Griffin Widrig sent the Spartans into a frenzy with his walk-off single to right field on a 1-2 count that drove in the winning run.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Boardman pitchers struck out six, while Canfield pitchers sat down eight.

Canfield got things started in the first inning. Nate Shaw drove in one on a single in the first stanza.  The Cardinals wouldn’t score again until extra innings on an error.

Guy Young got the win for the Spartans. The southpaw allowed three hits and one run over four innings, walking one in relief of Gavin Hyde.  Hyde started the game for Boardman and was scrappy surrendering one run on six hits over four innings, striking out six and walking one

Connor Miller started the game for the Cards, going five innings allowing two hits and one run while striking out five.  Jameson Beck and Jake Grdic came out of the bullpen in relief for Canfield.

Stephen Conti went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Boardman in hits.  Jack Dascenzo reached base twice as well to spark the Spartans.

Canfield collected ten hits on the night, including AJ Havrilla’s 3-4 night at the dish.  Ben Slanker also had a multi-hit game from the two-spot in the lineup.

With the rainout on Wednesday at Canfield, the teams will be forced to reschedule later this season.
