YOUNGSTOWN OH- No better way to start out the New Years than a Steel Valley Conference matchup between two of the top teams as the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals and coach Carey Palermo, who came into the game with a record of six and three, hosted coach  Marlon McGaughy and the Chaney Cowboys who were looking to get back to their winning ways after ending 2021 with a 70-55 loss against Medina  

The first quarter was a defensive matchup with turnovers and steals paving the way.  Chaney would lead at the end of one six to three thanks to four points by Matthew Jones wearing his away number 25 Jersey and two free throws by Clive Wilson and Josiah Gonzalez.  Mooney got a free throw by Drew Pecchia and ended the quarter with a buzzer three by Jack Pepperney.  

That three gave Cardinal Mooney the momentum the rest of the game as Mick Hergenrother had a huge second half along with Rocco Turner.  DaVinci McDowell and Wilson for Chaney got some momentum in the third and fourth with Wilson a force in the paint and a better second half at the free throw line and McDowell hitting a three.  However, Chaney got into foul trouble which caused Hergenrother to head back to the line and only miss one free throw.  Because of that, tje Cardinals ended up pulling away in the end winning by the final score 50 to 38, winning four in a row.  Mooney ended 2021 with a 47-13 win against Canton Central Catholic and started the new year with a conference win.
