RED BIRDS RALLY FALLS SHORT AGAINST SVSM

AKRON, OH- This Monday turned out to be quite the showdown on the diamond as the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals clashed with St. Vincent-St. Mary, eventually taking a narrow 7-5 defeat.

The game kicked off with St. Vincent-St. Mary grabbing the early lead in the first inning, thanks to a groundout by Rylan Hurley that brought a runner home. But the Cardinals weren’t about to let that slide. Matt Kay stepped up in the second, ripping a single that evened things up at two apiece.

The back-and-forth continued when St. Vincent-St. Mary answered right back in their half of the second. Hits from JJ Pytash and Max Milkovich nudged them ahead again. The game stayed tight, and by the fifth inning, the Cardinals had managed to tie things up once more. Big thanks to Ben Oddis’ walk, Vince Gentile’s timely single, and a sacrifice fly by William Petty.

But St. Vincent-St. Mary wouldn’t be denied. Ashton Tamzarian launched a sacrifice fly to edge them back in front, 6-5, in a crucial bottom of the fifth.

On the mound, Aidan Zwisler bagged the win for St. Vincent-St. Mary weathered seven hits and five runs over four innings and tallied six Ks. Ford Stacy shouldered the loss for the Cardinals after giving up five runs over a bit more than three innings of work.

Despite the loss, the Cardinals showed some hustle at the plate, gathering nine hits. Matt Kay stood out, driving in two runs from the ninth spot and snagging a hit in his three at-bats. Jonathan Brenner also had a solid day with two hits of his own.

Over on the other side, St. Vincent-St. Mary was swinging hot, racking up 11 hits. Devon Lehman, Milkovich, Zack Kurkey, and Pytash each nailed two hits to keep their team on the front foot.

Next up, the Cardinals are hitting the road to face Canfield on Tuesday.
