LABRAE SPOILS REBELS SENIOR NIGHT

COLUMBIANA OH- The Crestview Boys welcomes in Labrae On senior night Tuesday night but couldn’t muster up enough momentum to beat the Vikings. Labrae won 64-47. It was still a night where the Rebels got to recognize their seniors for the years of service to the program.

Three players for Crestview finished the game in double figures with 10 points. Jack Yerkey, Drake Golden, and Brandon Yanssens.

Crestview return to action on the road Tuesday as they travel to Leetonia.

BOARDMAN POWERS PAST LEOPARDS

BOARDMAN, OH- Boardman was able to contain a good shooting Louisville team on Tuesday to earn a 59-35 non-conference win.

The Spartans were led by Derrick Anderson with 20 points and 4 rebounds. Tommy Fryda continued to shoot well, connecting on four 3-pointers, including 3 in the first quarter to blow the game open early. Ethan Andersen was strong inside with 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. Daeone Martin has a nice night with 8 points. Trey DePietro had a strong game with 6 points, 3 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Zach Ryan and Connor Miller provided the defensive toughness all night. Ryan grabbing 7 rebounds and Miller grabbing 4 boards. Charlie Davis played good minutes, grabbing 2 rebounds. Andrew Clark connected on a 3 and Joey Zahran rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

The Leopards scoring was spread evenly across the team. Will Aljancic, Collin Chambers, Colton Jones, and Cory Noble all scored a team-high 6 points each to lead Louisville.

The win was Boardman’s 8th in a row and moves their record to 18-1 on the season, while Louisville falls to 12-7.

LADY SPARTANS DOUBLED UP BY HARDING

BOARDMAN, OH- You just knew it’d be a heavyweight bout on Saturday afternoon as Harding visited Boardman, but it was the Lady Raiders that came out swinging from the bell on their way to a 68-34 victory.

Raegan Burkey led the way for the Lady Spartans with 9 points, a pair of rebounds and an assist.  Maria Torres tossed in a pair from beyond the arc on her way to an 8 point day, while bringing down 4 rebounds.  Emma Mills also contributed with 6 points and a pair of caroms.

Boardman will look to bounce back against Cardinal Mooney on Monday with hopes to sweep the season series.  If you’re unable to make it to the House of Cards, you can tune in on YSN.  Varsity is slated for 7:30 with Nate Keiper on the call.

 

LADY SPARTANS COME UP JUST SHORT AGAINST CANFIELD

BOARDMAN, OH- The Boardman Lady Spartans lost a defensive battle to Canfield on Wednesday night by the score of 38-31. Boardman held the lead the majority of the second half, overcoming a 3 point deficit at the half to lead 30-25 with just over 2 minutes on the clock. The Cardinals who had been shut down the majority of the night then connected on 3 consecutive triples in the next minute to take a 34-30 lead and pull away in the final minute 38-31.

It was a hard-fought and tightly contested game by both AAC rivals. The Spartans were led by Maria Torres’ 13 point, 8 rebound effort, also handing out 2 assists and a steal. Raegan Burkey added 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals on the night. Emma Tokarsky also hit for 4, 2 rebounds and an assist. Freshman guard, Gia Triveri scored 3 points, had 2 rebounds and 3 assists. Emma Mills knocked down a triple for her 3 while grabbing 4 rebounds and assisted on 2 baskets. Serene Khatib scored 2 and snagged 2 steals while Bailey Moore also scored 2 and dished out an assist. Freshman Bella Martin also continued to play solid defense and pulled down 3 offensive rebounds on the night.

The Spartans play their final home game of the season on Saturday versus the AAC leading Warren Harding Raiders in a 2/3:30 JV/Varsity tilt.

SPARTANS START FAST; FINISH STRONG AGAINST HOWLAND

BOARDMAN, OH- Boardman used a fast start, jumping on Howland 21-0 to start the game, to earn an AAC victory, 64-31.

Derrick Anderson had a game-high 20 points, to go with 5 assists. Tommy Fryda hit three 3-balls on his way to 11points. Daeone Martin added 8 points while playing strong defense, snagging 4 steals. Charlie Davis had 7 points and 3 rebounds. Ethan Andersen added 5 points and 5 rebounds. Trey DePietro chipped in with 4 points and 4 rebounds. Jimmy Goske, Andrew Clark and Luke Ryan rounded out the scoring with 3 points each. Goske and Clark connecting from beyond the arc. Zach Ryan had a strong floor game with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Connor Miller was a big factor defensively and Joey Zahran grabbed 2 rebounds for the Spartans.

The win moves Boardman’s record to 14-1 (5-0) on the season. The Spartans travel to Tallmadge on a Friday to take on a tough Blue Devil squad.

CRESTVIEW BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH RICK GATES

COLUMBIANA, OH- One of the most recognizable names in Crestview Coaching History has made his return to “The ‘View” after a few years away from the high school bench.

Rick Gates once again dons the Black and Gold, and has the Boys Basketball team believing in themselves once again.  The Rebels look to return to the glory of big crowds, high octane offense, and championship pedigree defense.

We had a chance to sit down with Coach Gates to discuss the season to this point, his staff, and his passion for basketball.

BOARDMAN SHOWS CONSISTENCY IN VICTORY OVER HARDING

BOARDMAN, OH- Boardman hosted a talented Warren Harding team Tuesday and won a very important conference game, 61-42. Warren jumped out early in the 1st quarter but the Spartans hung tough closing the quarter tied 13-13. A very strong 2nd quarter, 18-5 Boardman, allowed the Spartans to separate going into the locker room at halftime. The lead expanded in the 3rd quarter and Boardman held on for the win in the 4th.

Derrick Anderson carried the load for Boardman offensively, scoring a game-high 25 points, to go with 5 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. Tommy Fryda and Daeone Martin both had very solid games with 8 points. Fryda grabbed 4 rebounds and 6 steals. Martin grabbed 4 boards as well and gave out 3 assists. Ethan Anderson battled foul trouble but was still a strong presence inside, scoring 7 points and grabbing 5 rebounds to go with 3 blocked shots. Charlie Davis nailed back to back timely 3 point shots for 6 points. Trey DePietro made his presence felt with 4 points and 5 rebounds to go along with 3 blocks. Connor Miller buried a 3 ball and grabbed 3 rebounds. Zach Ryan played strong on both ends, pestering Warren’s guards. And Andrew Clark once again made a good contribution to the win.

The win was an important bounce back for the Spartans and improves their record to 11-1 (4-0) on the season. Boardman will be back in action this weekend vs Youngstown East on Friday and Farrell (Pa) on Saturday afternoon, both games at home.

BARTLETT BIG FROM BEYOND; FITCH WINS THRILLER

AUSTINTOWN, OH- It wasn’t easy for either sideline, but Austintown Fitch rallied to win an AAC thriller on Wednesday 60-56 over Boardman.

Emma Bartlett scored a game-high 24 points in which she connected on 6 shots from beyond the arc.  Ashley Mickey also dialed up from long range on a pair of scores late in the final stanza and finished with 7 points total on the night.  Also contributing in the win was senior Daria Williams with 14, and Jocelyn Jourdan with 5.

For Boardman, Raegan Burkey led the way with 21 points, and was supplemented by 12 from Maria Torres and Katie Stamp’s 10 points.

Fitch (5-7, 1-2) were able to take their first conference victory of the year, while Boardman (3-11, 0-3) are left still searching for their inaugural conference win this season.

YSN Austintown Fitch Boys Basketball Coach’s Corner (EP 1) with Brian Beany

AUSTINTOWN, OH- The Falcons have been flying early on this season to the tune of a winning record, and Head Coach Brian Beany is pushing the envelope on his guys with expectations for more.  At the end of the day, it’s going to take everything that Fitch has to offer to stand atop the AAC.  The conference is loaded with talent, and the Falcons certainly have their share.

The All-American Conference is on notice, and Fitch is looking to bring the crown back to A-town in 2020.

We sat down with Head Coach Brian Beany to discuss the year so far, and to catch up prior to the Boardman game.  We discuss talent in the area, AAU, and more in this edition of Austintown Fitch Boys Basketball Coach’s Corner (EP 1) with Brian Beany.

AUSTINTOWN FITCH GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH DAN SCHNURRENBERGER

AUSTINTOWN, OH- It’s been a bumpy road for Falcon Nation halfway through the year for girls hoops.  Although, promising days are on the way as Coach Dan Schnurrenberger has the girls believing in themselves heading down the home stretch.

The Lady Falcons look to shoot their way out of a losing streak this week, and AAC foe Boardman is in town to do business.

We caught up with Coach S prior to the Spartan matchup to discuss what his season represents so far, as well as his favorite aspects of coaching.
