BULLDOGS BREAK OUT THE BROOMS IN OPENER

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Lakeview comes in to 2022 with their core of talent in tact. Carrying a roster loaded with senior leadership, the Bulldogs hope to be one of the best teams in the area. They didn’t miss a beat in their first game of the campaign as they traveled to Mooney and earned the win in straight sets (25-11 25-16 25-7)

Lakeview was led by senior captain Tara Lytle who finished with 15 kills on the day. She also contributed 2 blocks.  Maggie Pavlansky and Mallory Mailach split the assists on the day even at 15 a piece. Reagan Price’s serve gave Mooney trouble all day as she finished with 6 aces.  Maddie Bayus led the defense with 15 digs out of the back row.

Marissa Bowman led Mooney with 3 kills. Addison Stacy set up the offense with 6 assists.  Bowman also had double digit digs with 10.  Maria Fire had a game high 3 blocks.

Lakeview will start NE8 play on Tuesday as they travel to Hubbard. Mooney looks to grab their first win Tuesday hosting Warren Harding.

PALESTINE BATTLES IN LOSS TO MALVERN

EAST PALESTINE OH- When building a program, you have to be able to take away as many positives as possible during games. East Palestine had plenty of things go right despite a loss to Malvern 31-14.

After the Hornets got on the board first, East Palestine put together a quality drive down to the red zone. They’d eventually punch it in to the end zone and take their first lead of the young season 7-6.  After Malvern answered to take back the 12-7 lead, Palestine got right back to work and moved the ball yet again. They were unable to finish the drive with points this time around though. The Bulldogs would score again in the 3rd quarter to stay within striking distance before ultimately falling to the Hornets.

The Bulldogs will try to take the good and leave the bad in Week 2 as they travel to Toronto for their first road trip of the year.

BRIGHT DAYS ARE AHEAD IN LAKEVIEW

CORTLAND OH- Lakeview football has been searching for positives for a while. They came into the 2022 season on a 16 game losing streak, and they’d lost 25 of their last 28. Well, you can drown all of that negativity away because they opened the season with an emphatic win over last year’s 1 seed in Division VI LaBrae 34-7.

Nolan Toth finished the Bulldogs first drive of the game with a three yard touchdown, and they would never look back.  Damien Natali took the quarterback role and finished with 115 rushing yards on 13 carries and found the end zone twice. Hayden Bartram also scored for the Bulldogs offense.  Lakeview totaled 291 rushing yards on the day.

The Lakeview defense was up for the task too as they held the Vikings to just 149 total yards.

COWBOYS RUN ROUGHSHOD IN POLAND

POLAND OH- The Chaney Cowboys traveled to Poland to face the Bulldogs in week 1 of the 2022 high school football season. Chaney would come away the dominate victor. Scoring 4 touchdown through the ground game highlighted by Jawann Harmon’s 2 touchdown night. Cowboys win 34-2.

The Cowboys started their scoring with 3 rushing touchdowns by 3 different running backs (Jason Amil-Austin, Jawan Freeman, and Harmon) in the first half to make the game 22-0 with 7 minutes left in the second quarter. Chaney would score one more time before going into the locker room after Quarterback Matt Jones found Senior Jason Hewlett from 58 yard down field for a spectacular touchdown pass. The ‘Pokes led at halftime 28-0.
Poland would stop the Cowboy offense for most of the second half with a Safety being the highlight of Poland’s defensive stance. Harmon would score one final time for the Cowboys rushing for 3 yards to give him his second touchdown of the night. Chaney wins 34-2. Chaney (1-0) will travel to Boardman in week 2 while Poland (0-1) will travel to Louisville. Catch both games here on YSNLIVE.com.

MODIC-BLYTHERS CONTINUES COACHING CAREER IN FLORIDA

FORT MYERS FL- There are plenty of YSN alums out there doing incredible things to continue to grow the sport that made them such a legend in the valley. Poland softball has made quite a few legends in their history.  One of which is our next exclusive interview on YSN.

Jenna Modic-Blythers grew up in blue. She played for Poland, and celebrated a state championship with the Bulldogs.  After an incredible career in high school, she continued her journey as a player into college. She started her career at Miami (OH), and eventually found her home at Pittsburgh.  As a player in the ACC, she played on the highest stage, against some of the biggest names in the sport. It was a career that every young softball player could dream of.

After spending a little bit of time away from the game after she graduated, Jenna quickly realized her heart was keeping her in the game. Taking a bunch of cues from her father Brett, who not only coached her, but has fine tuned so many talented players in our area. Her coaching career began at the University of Rochester in New York. After spending two season there, she moved on to take an assistant job at Oakland.  While she was there Oakland softball saw great success.  Last season, they won the Horizon league tournament, and punched a ticket to the NCAA tournament. Jenna stepped in as head coach during that tournament run. Now she takes on a new chapter in her coaching career taking an assistant role at Florida Golf Coast University.

in a press release about her hiring, FGCU head coach David Deiros had this to say “She has been a successful coach at each of her previous institutions, and she has helped their offenses improve each year. We have a very young team, so I am confident that her high energy and adaptability will make an immediate impact in our program.”

The boys on Running Point had a chance to talk with Coach Blythers this week about her journey from Poland to Florida, and every stop in between. Jenna also discusses the lessons she has learned, and gives out advice to players in the midst of recruiting right now. Don’t miss this exclusive interview on YSN.
