CARDS HAVE GOOD HANDS AGAINST FITCH

AUSTINTOWN OH- The All-American Conference (AAC) is a perennial gauntlet year in and year out. Whether you are on the boys or the girls side, it always presents eight hard-nosed, drag-out contests throughout the regular season, despite there only being five teams. On Wednesday night, that was no different as two AAC contests went down, including a battle of the birds with Canfield traveling to Austintown to battle The Falcons on the girls’ side.

Canfield was a shareholder of The AAC crown a season ago, along with The Howland Tigers, where Fitch brought back almost their entire roster from a season ago. Starting as most conference contests do, it was a gritty defensive battle from the opening tip. Canfield, inserting new faces into the rotation this year, goes about eight girls deep, with every single one of them having starter qualities and capabilities.

The Cardinals defense dictated the first half, as both defenses did a great job in creating turnovers, Canfield stood out in shutting down various would-be fastbreak opportunities from Austintown. However, multi-sport athlete, Ayla Ray was dialing it in from distance for The Falcons to the tune of 11 points on the night! Freshman Kylie Folkwein also had a nice game, contributing six points for Fitch and establishing her presence in the paint for rebounds. But a full team effort from The Cardinals allowed them to extend their second-half lead to double-digits and never look back!

Canfield had multiple scorers show up in the box score with Kate Sahlie, Carlie Harmon, and Abby Muckleroy all contributing over 30 points of offense combined. Camie Dill (Canfield) battled with Jocelyn Jourdan (Austintown) all night and both were defensive stoppers on their respective squads. However, Canfield’s Abby Muckleroy stands out as The Player of the Game with her contributions all over the court and the calming presence she establishes amongst her team with her leadership and experience.

The Cardinals closed out the contest on a convincing run, showing quick-hands, and converting steals to points sealing their first conference win of the season 48-35 over Fitch. While Boardman captured a win in a thriller against Howland the same night, two teams hold possession of first place in The AAC with Harding waiting in the wings having yet to have a conference game.

The win for Canfield (5-0) will now send The Cardinals to Cleveland in a non-conference matchup with Struthers (5-2), who is tied for first place in The Northeast 8 Conference (NE8), at the home of The Cavaliers in Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. That contest is slated for Friday, December 16th at 2 p.m. and will be on YSN! For Fitch (1-5) they will look to right the ship against another group of cardinals, as they will host Cardinal Mooney (4-4) on Saturday, December 17th in part two of the battle of the birds!

CARDINALS COME BACK TO BEAT URSULINE 58-50

CANFIELD, OH- The Canfield Cardinals hosted the Ursuline Irish in a non-conference boys’ basketball game on Tuesday night. These two programs are atop the best in the district this season in division two. The Irish had a comfortable lead in the first half, but a late spark by Canfield pushed them past the Irish by a final of 58-50.

In the first quarter, Ursuline senior shooting guard Vinny Flauto had four three pointers to score 12 of the Ursuline 18 points. The Irish and the Cardinals went back and forth in the second quarter to head to the locker room with Ursuline leading 30-25. In the third quarter, the Cardinals outscored the Irish 23-11 with Canfield junior guard Tony Russo scoring 10 points to take a 48-41 lead at the end of three quarters. Canfield clamped down defensively in the fourth quarter to hold the Irish to just nine total points in the final eight minutes. The Cardinals rallied back to win 58-50.

The Cardinals were led by Russo who scored 21 points, while junior forward Jake Schneider also contributed with eight points. Ursuline was led by Vinny Flauto and Terrance Pankey who each had 14 points.

Ursuline is now 3-1 and will host Grand River Academy at 7 P.M. on Saturday night. Canfield is now 3-1 on the season and will travel to Mooney this Friday. Head Coach John Cullen accomplished 600 career wins after tonight’s victory. Here is what coach Cullen had to say after the win:

CANFIELD RUNS WILD

CANFIELD OH- Canfield meant business on Wednesday night as they welcomed in the Ursuline Irish. The Cardinals had gotten off to an impressive 2-0 start, but they knew the Irish would pose a challenge. Well, to say the Cardinals were prepared would be an understatement.  After a big 19-7 first quarter that set the tone of the night, Canfield rambled their way to a 56-18 victory.

Kate Sahli had a great night for the Cardinals inside and out. She beat the Irish off the dribble, but also was able to knock down some shots on the perimeter. She finished with a game-high 13 points.  Abby Muckleroy continued her shooting expertise hitting three triples on her way to 11 points.  Jenn Triveri had an impressive night off the bench for the Cardinals as well with 7 points.

Ursuline was led by Alayna Smith who finished the night withn8 points. She earned every point she got as the Cardinals defense was hyper focused on taking her away. Chelsee Johnson scored 6 points for the Irish.

Canfield has a huge test up next as they’ll welcome in Stow on Saturday.  Ursuline is also back in action on Saturday as they host United.

CANFIELD THE TOP CARDINALS IN TOWN

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The battle of the state birds was a one-sided fight Saturday afternoon. The Cardinal Mooney Cardinals played host to the Canfield Cardinals in a game that was all Canfield from the very beginning. Canfield dominated straight from the tip behind a very potent and electrifying offense that looked to attack with every chance they had. Their defense was just as strong as their offense as they held Mooney to just one made field goal in the first quarter as they led 22-5 behind seven points from Kate Sahli.

Mooney’s offense continued to struggle in the second quarter as they only managed one more made field goal scoring another five points thanks to free throws. They were led in scoring by Maria Fire in the first half as she accounted for eight of the ten points scored. Canfield did not have any problem keeping the hot hand as they added on 19-points behind four points from Callie Harmon and four points from Jenna Triveri. The Cardinals led 41-10 at the half.

Canfield would let off the gas in the second half as their scoring finally hit a wall as they scored just six points. But on the flipside Cardinal Mooney turned their shooting woes aroundwith Olivia Rouser and Maria Fire as they helped the team cut the lead down to 47-22 before the end of the quarter.

But their comeback was cut short as Mooney’s scoring would not keep up pace and they would be outscored by Canfield in the final quarter 10-8. Canfield would take home the win 57-30 over the Mooney Cardinals. Canfield was led in scoring by Kate Sahli who finished with 13. Mooney was led by Maria Fire who scored 16 of the teams 30 points.

Cardinal Mooney will be back in action on Wednesday against Warren G. Harding and will look to get back over .500 as their record is now (3-3). Canfield moves to (2-0) on the season and they will play host to the Liberty Leopards on Monday.

THIRD TIME’S A CHARM, CARDINALS GOING TO STATE

RAVENNA, OH- On a freezing cold night in northeast Ohio, The Canfield Cardinals met the Chardon Hilltoppers in the regional final for the second time in three years. Chardon won 15 consecutive playoff games before meeting the Cardinals after winning back to back state championships in 2020 and 2021. The Cardinals defense fought hard all night long to hold the Hilltoppers to just seven points, which was enough to go back to state for the first time since 2005.

Neither team scored in the first quarter as Canfield opened up the game with a turnover on an interception by Chardon’s Caleb Hewitt. In the second quarter, the Hilltoppers struck first on a 35 yard touchdown run by Andrew Bruce to make it 7-0. After both teams fumbled inside Chardon’s 10 yard line, the Cardinals capitalized with a 8 yard touchdown reception by fullback Dom Marzano to tie the game at 7-7. Both teams went to the locker room deadlocked at 7-7.

Both teams had just one scoreless possession in the third quarter to setup a tie for the final 12 minutes of play. The Cardinals made the biggest play of the game late in the fourth quarter on a 56 yard touchdown run from junior tailback Danny Inglis to take a 14-7 lead. On the next possession, Chardon moved the football inside Canfield’s 40 yard line, until they turned it over on downs with a stop by linebacker Dom Marzano on a fourth and one. Canfield goes back to the state semifinal for the first time since 2005. The Cardinals will play Holy Name next Friday at Euclid Community Stadium at 7 P.M. Our YSN crew got a chance to talk with Canfield head coach Mike Pavlansky after the victory. Here is what he had to say:

CANFIELD TAKES DOWN URSULINE TO GET A REMATCH WITH CHARDON

NILES, OH- Canfield and Ursuline met for the first time since 1984 at Bo Rein Memorial Stadium for the regional semifinal in division three, region nine. Canfield got the early lead in the ballgame and took that lead the rest of the way to advance to the regional final for the second time in the last three years.

The Cardinals got the opening kickoff and it didn’t take long to get on the scoreboard as junior tailback Scottie Eaton busted out a 56 yard jet sweep to the house taking the early 6-0 lead. Ursuline would respond later in the first quarter as junior quarterback Jack Ericson took one on his feet for a 50 yard touchdown to tie the game at 6. On the next possession to open up the second quarter, senior quarterback Broc Lowry ran one in from 14 yards out to make it a 13-6 Cardinals advantage. Canfield would turn the Irish over on downs and score again on another Lowry touchdown run, this one being from 43 yards out to take a 20-6 lead in the second quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, senior kicker Joel Miasek recovered his own onside kick to put the ball back in Canfields hands’. The Cardinals would capitalize with the extra possession on Lowry’s third rushing touchdown of the second quarter, extending the lead to 27-6. The Irish got a key score at the end of the first half when quarterback Jack Ericson ran it in from two yards out for his second rushing touchdown of the half. After one half of play, Canfield led by 15, 27-12.

There were no points scored in the third quarter after both quarterbacks had there one and only turnover of the ballgame with interceptions on back to back possessions. In the fourth quarter, junior running back Christian Lynch got the Irish closer with a 25 yard touchdown run to make it a 27-18 ballgame. The Cardinals would respond once again as junior tailback Danny Inglis cut it back on a stretch play and his speed took off for a 52 yard touchdown run, making it a two possession lead at 33-18. Ursuline would not go down without a fight, scoring once more on a long touchdown reception from DC Ferrell to put the Irish back within one possession at 33-25. Canfield had the football with less than three minutes remaining and was able to drain the clock and advance to the regional final, taking down the Irish by a final score of 33-25.

Canfield will take on the number one seeded Chardon Hilltoppers next Friday at a site TBD. Canfield will look to get some revenge as the Cardinals have bowed out to Chardon the last two seasons in the regional final and semifinal. The Hilltoppers have won back to back division three state tittles and have a record of 11-1 heading into next week.

CANFIELD GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MATT REEL

CANFIELD OH- It’s just about go time for basketball in Canfield. On the girls side of things, the program is in the middle of a very successful stretch. Last season the Cardinals won a share of the AAC, splitting with Howland. They’re impressive record of 16-7 (6-1) made them one of the most respected programs in the area. In 2022-2023 they move down to Division 2. This gives Canfield a lot of confidence that they can make some postseason moves.  Before all that though they have a tough regular season schedule to get through. The Cardinals open up with a returning district champion welcoming in West Branch on November 22nd.

Head coach Matt Reel goes in to his 13th season at he helm. He was gracious enough to take the time to come on to YSN’s Running Point to preview the year to come. He talks with Anthony Hartwig  about his returning starters, some new faces to watch out for, and so much more.
