SOMETIMES THE LONG WAY IS THE BEST WAY

COLUMBIANA OH- Tori Long has been ruling the roost in Columbiana girls sports for her entire high school career. Whether it’s volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter, or now softball in the spring Tori has been a mainstay of consistent leadership. Softball has always been her go to though, and now she gets one last season to compete in the red and white.

Long is a dynamic threat for the Clippers that can do a little bit of everything. But what the opponents of Columbiana should really be worried about is her work in the circle. Tori headlines a pretty deep pitching staff from the Clippers that are coached by two former college pitchers.  That’s not where it ends though, Long certainly fits the description of a pitcher who can rake. Her bat is as electric as her arm. When you add all that to the fact that she’s one of the strongest leaders you can ask for, there aren’t too many people more valuable to a team.

Tori took the time to talk with Anthony Hartwig this week to discuss her senior season. She talks about what made her college decision so easy, who has been so important in her softball journey, and much more.

CLIPPERS LOOK IMPRESSIVE WITH WIN OVER HOWLAND

COLUMBIANA OH- Columbiana (2-0) picked up a big non-conference 2-1 win over Howland (0-1) Thursday afternoon.  After three scoreless frames, Columbiana struck first plating two runs in the fourth inning.  Alex Eusebio got things started with a one out single to right.  Eddie Clancy followed with another single to right moving Eusebio to second.  After a strikeout both runners would move up on a wild pitch to Trevor Dearing.  Eusebio would then score on the next pitch as it also got past the Tiger catcher.  Dearing followed with a single to right knocking in Clancy giving the Clippers the early lead.

Howland would plate a run in the sixth on a wild pitch and in the seventh would get a runner to third but starting pitcher Zach Pleska would strike out the final Tiger hitter looking to end the threat and pick up the complete game victory.

Pleska (1-0) pitched a gem needing only 88 pitches in his seven innings of work.  Pleska struck out nine while scattering four hits.  Pleksa was also helped by exceptional defense by the Clippers.  Alex Eusebio made two outstanding plays on slow rollers at third.  Devin Daugherty and Eddie Clancy were solid up the middle turning a double play and converting all their chances.  Brady Kridler also made key plays at first throughout the contest.

Offensively, the Clippers collected five hits on the afternoon while walking three times.  In addition to Eusebio, Clancy and Dearing’s singles in the fourth, Seth Spooner and Devin Daugherty each also singled.

Next up for the Clippers will be Western Reserve.  Columbiana travels to Berlin Center on Saturday for a 2 PM start.

COLUMBIANA BASEBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH RYAN WOLF

COLUMBIANA OH- In the 2021baseball  season, The Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference (EOAC) was dominated, top to bottom, by The Columbiana Clippers.  They compiled a perfect 11-0 conference record, to rack up another impressive season for Clipper baseball.  Returning a bunch of starters, while bringing in other seniors for leadership has Columbiana heading into this season with 10 seniors on the roster!  Including multiple arms from a stellar rotation that, combined, had a team ERA under 2. Making their pitching an area to keep an eye on this season. The conference schedule paired with the non-conference games should see The Clippers clash with some of the areas best this season.

Ty Bartell got the chance to catch up with Head Coach Ryan Wolf. As they discuss the Columbiana program, the takeaways from last year and the expectations of this year.  Clipper-clap along till the home opener for Columbiana on Thursday, March 31st in a bout with the well-known Howland Tigers!

FROM ZERO TO A MILLION

COLUMBIANA, OH- The Columbiana Basketball Team has been blessed with some great players to trot the court in their history.  Almost too many to name.  However, any time you talk about breaking the records of a Clipper Hall of Famer like Troy Berdine- it’s going to catch the eyes of many who have followed the program throughout the years.

That’s exactly what Columbiana Senior Nick Million did earlier this year- the single-game point record that Berdine had held since 1985 was toppled when Million put 41 together in a single game this season.  Million also now holds the single-game record for three-pointers (9) and three-pointers in a season.

While breaking all these records and showcasing his talents for the Red and White, Nick has been making his dream come true of playing college basketball, as on February 11th, Million broke the news that he would continue his athletic and academic pursuits at Geneva College- and join fellow Columbiana County standout Drake Golden as a Tornado.

Nick has worked on his craft and takes a ton of pride in the number he wears- just like those that came before him.  We asked Nick who he feels can carry on the legacy of what’s become part of Clipper Tradition in this week’s Columbiana Player Profile: From Zero to a Million!
