NO FIRST GAME JITTERS FOR CRESTVIEW

By Chris Sigler

Anticipation for the start of the season is always something that builds in all players, coaches and fans alike. This season was no different for the Crestview and East Liverpool volleyball teams each coming off 20 win campaigns and deep postseason runs. Last season these two teams would meet in October with the Rebels suffering their first set loss in 15 matches at the hands of the Potters before eventually coming out on top. That competitive contest set the stage for the highly anticipated 2023 season opener. This year however Crestview proved why they are thought of as one of the best teams in Division III quickly dispatching East Liverpool 25-15, 25-18, 25-14 at Potter Fieldhouse on Wednesday.

Crestview’s Grace Auer showed why she is considered one of the best all around players in the area. The Rebel senior filled the stat sheet with 10 kills, 19 assists, 6 aces, 17 digs, and 18 points. Teammate and Division 1 recruit Abbey Emch made life difficult for the Potters at the net all night. The University of Pittsburgh commit came through with 17 kills, 5 blocks and 8 digs. Lainey Auer would add 7 kills,12 assists, 9 digs while Julia Blasko contributed 14 digs and 17 points for the Rebels.

Early in the game, the Eagles’ Ja’sean Lindsey showcased his agility and determination with a 3-yard touchdown run, giving Valley Christian an initial 6-0 lead with 8 minutes and 15 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Valley Christian’s Ike Lake continued the offensive onslaught, finding the end zone with a 3-yard touchdown run, pushing the Eagles’ advantage to 14-0. Lake’s impressive performance on the ground included 63 yards on 8 carries and 2 touchdowns, solidifying his impact on the game.

While Ja’sean Lindsey had a strong night running the ball, amassing two scores and 217 yards on 20 carries, the Eagles defense was equally formidable. Cadyn McElhaney intercepted a pass, showcasing the team’s splash play ability on both sides of the ball.

The Rebels fought back, as Jake Noling powered through the Eagles’ defense for a 1-yard touchdown run, narrowing the gap to 14-6. Noling proved to be a key player for the Rebels, accumulating seven carries for 45 yards and both of Crestview’s scores.

However, Valley Christian responded swiftly. Ja’sean Lindsey added another touchdown to his impressive performance, this time with a 1-yard run, extending the Eagles’ lead to 22-6 with 7 minutes and 39 seconds left in the game.

As the game entered the fourth quarter, Jake Noling dug deep, finding the end zone with a 2-yard touchdown run. While the Rebels drew nearer, their efforts weren’t enough to overcome the Eagles’ lead. The final score stood in favor of Valley Christian, as they secured the victory on opening night 30-12.

LADY REBELS RUN RAMPANT IN THE RAIN

* CONTRIBUTED BY NATE DICROSS

The Rebels and the Potters welcomed the start of 2023 girls soccer Monday night as East Liverpool played host to the visiting Crestview squad. The party got kicked off right on time with a killer rendition of the national anthem and then they were underway. Mother nature brought enough rain for both teams, which set the stage for. opening night. The Lady Rebels made sure not to show up empty handed, bringing all the goals for the night.

Karagin Miller opened scoring early for Crestview with a goal in the 3 rd minute of play. Potter Nation was unfazed by the early goal and the girls regrouped valiantly, slowing the Rebel attack for quite some time, but the senior leadership and experience of Crestview proved to be too much. Goals by Sydney Wellman, Bailey Wonner and Rylee Shaffer were enough to put Crestview firmly in control through the first half of play. The Potters found themselves with some opportunities during the first half, with a couple runs past the Rebel back line and some balls that bounced around in the box long enough to keep both fan bases on their toes, but key saves by Lexi Huff. and great combined effort by the defense helped keep the sheet clean at the half.

The rain would let up by the start of the 2 nd half but the Rebel attack did not. Seniors Karagin Miller and Rylee Shaffer both found the back of the net from distance. Rylee placing a great ball in the top corner from somewhere near the 18 and Karagin taking advantage of space she found from what seemed like the Newell bridge and driving another home for the Rebels. At one point, Crestview strikers seemed to be racing to a hat trick, with Senior captains Rylee, Karagin, and Bailey – plus sophomore Syd Wellman all sitting at 2 goals. It was Miller who was able to capitalize for a 3rd goal, as she would lead both teams in scoring on the night. Finally, freshman Bri DiCross was determined to get the 2027 class in on the scoring and slipped one past the keeper for her 1st varsity goal. Crestview will take a week off before kicking off MVAC league play against Springfield in their home opener next Wednesday. The Potters will look to regroup and grab their first win against Oak Glen on Thursday.

Scoring: Karagin Miller (3), Bailey Wonner (2), Rylee Shaffer (2), Sydney Wellman (2), Bri DiCross (1)

EMCH WILL CALL PITTSBURGH HOME

COLUMBIANA OH- One of the best volleyball players in the area made a splash in the news last week as she made her college commitment known to the world. Crestview junior Abbey Emch announced that she has decided to continue her volleyball career at the University of Pittsburgh.

Last season Emch was near unstoppable in the Rebel attack as she finished with 439 kills for  23 win Crestview.  She averaged 5.2 kills per set and hit at a percentage of .408.  She also led the team in blocking totaling 96 on the season.  The well rounded athlete didn’t stop there as she also served up 55 aces.  All of her hard work was enough to get the attention of the Pitt coaching staff.

Pittsburgh is one of the best volleyball teams in the country. They finished last season ranked 4th in the AVCA coaches poll.  They finished 31-4 on the year and went to the NCAA Final Four where they fell to top ranked Louisville in 5 sets.

Emch ventures into her junior year of high school with plenty of goals left on the table for her career and team before putting on the blue and gold.  The top goal of course is to get Crestview a trip to Wright State to play in the State Tournament.  Abbey was able to take the time out of her day to come on YSN’s Running Point to talk about her commitment to Pittsburgh and what went into the decision. A BRUBAKER’S DOZEN

COLUMBIANA OH- When a player gets an opportunity to shine, the best of the best take it and run with it.  For Crestview softball after losing a lot of big talent and leadership to graduation there was a need for someone new to take a big step up. Brooke Brubaker was the no doubt candidate for the next big role model inside the Rebels dugout.  Even though she had some big shoes to fill, she never shied away from the big moments. Brooke quickly became not just a big name inside the MVAC, but in the area as a whole.

Brubaker led her team in a lot of different categories but everything starts in the circle. Brubaker was the leader in innings pitched for the Rebels spending 66.1 in the circle.  She struck out 78 hitters in that time.  Brubaker also hit well at the plate.  Her .522 average led the team by almost 80 points.  On the year she smacked 1 home run, 2 triples, and 10 doubles.  Those extra bass hits helped her collect 26 RBI.  She also scored 12 runs.

Brooke took the time for a great interview with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about her season and growth as a player. They discuss getting through adversity, what kind of leadership she brings to the table, and so much more. Check out the latest Crestview Softball Player Profile exclusively on YSN.
