CARDINALS END EAST’S SEASON

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Cardinal Mooney opened their tournament run on Wednesday beating East for the third time this season by a score of 41-19.

First Half

The Cardinals got off to a fast start early thanks to two free throws from Katie Hoguh and would add on to that in the first quarter with three pointers from Angelina Rotunno, Alaina Scavina and Gia DiVincenzo.  Meanwhile, the Lady Bears of east would only have a two pointer and a free throw from Samir Colon with the score at the end of the first being 14-3 Mooney.

The second quarter saw little as Mooney pulled away again with Maria Fire getting four points in the quarter.  Hough would once again execute on the free throws, while Gia Diorio made a two point jumper that took a couple of bounces before it finally went through the net.  East would only have three points once again from Colon as going into the half and just couldn’t get past the Mooney man to man and pressure defense.  The score at the half was 29-6.

Second Half

It seemed like at the second half that the Golden Bears found a bit of their mistakes as they started to rattle the Lady Cardinals a bit from one missed shot to the next.  The Bears would get some buckets out of it from Ja’Mia Dent who scored four points in the third along with Colon once again with two made free throws.  Meanwhile Mooney was only held to five points in the third, those being four points in total from Hough and a free throw by Fire.

However, Mooney still had the lead going into the fourth and never looked back as East’s last few points were field goals inside the paint by senior Brianna Thompson as the Cardinals will move on to the Sectional Finals against West Geauga (6-4) who got a big victory last night against the Southeast Pirates (9-5) 54-47 and continue while East finishes the season at five and seven winning 41-19.

MOONEY STAYS PERFECT IN THE STEEL VALLEY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Cardinal Mooney came in to Thursday night’s matchup with East trying to complete their second straight undefeated season in the Steel Valley Conference. The Cardinals did just that with a 44-24 win over East, a team they only beat by 2 earlier in the season.

Katie Hough was the leading scorer for Mooney finishing with 14 points. Marie Fire was also in double figures with 10.

The Bears were paced by Brianna Thompson who scored 10 points on the night.

Mooney and East will meet again on Wednesday in the OHSAA sectional semifinals. That game will be at Mooney and tip off at 7:00.

CREQUE SNAPS SHOOTING RECORD

Fitch will stay at home and host Boardman on Wednesday.

IRISH BEAT THE BUZZER IN OVERTIME

YOUNGSTOWN OH-  The other night, we saw overtime, tonight, we saw another overtime as what looked like an early blowout became the game of the night with both the Ursuline and Youngstown East Golden Bears showed GRIT, and never backed down.  There were also familiar faces as East basketball coach Kevin Cylar met his friend and head coach Keith Gunther as well as returning to the same place he won three state championships in as an assistant coach on the football team.

In the first quarter, it was all Ursuline as they led 22-8 after some first quarter threes by Will Burney, Tyler Beck, and Brady Shannon while East only had eight points.  In the Second, it was Ursuline leading 40-23 and East somehow needed a turn around as it seemed to have been getting out of hand.  That is until the third quarter as all of a sudden, the Golden Bears started rotating like what Coach Cylar and Ray said and it cut the lead to 10 going into the fourth.  All of a sudden, the Irish defense slowed down and they started missing some important shots, as the Golden Bears took advantage of that, going into overtime tied at 57 all.  In the end, East went up by two with a free throw, and it looked like they were about to get the upset victory.  However, Tyler Beck said not so fast as he hit a corner buzzer beater three pointer to keep the ursuline winning streak alive, beating East in a thriller 67-66.

Ursuline Stats

For Ursuline, it was DeMarcus McElroy leading with 14 points.  Brady Shannon and Tyler Beck finished with 12 points, Beck with the game winner. Terrance Pankey finished with 11 points, Jakylan Irving had nine points, Will Burney had five points, while Jayden Payne and Geno Lucente combined for four points.

East Stats

John Clay was the leading scorer on the East Golden Bears with 19 points, Ramir Bledsoe had 16 points, Ruben Talley finished with 12 points with a big fourth quarter, Dj Waller finished with nine points, Lamar Underwood had six points, while Anthony Thomas and Xavior Leonard combined for four points.

Up Next

Ursuline (9-4) takes on the Chaney Cowboys (4-4) Tuesday 7pm tip-off at Chaney.  East (2-5) will head to face GlenOak.
