1,000 REASONS TO BELIEVE IN KANICKI

ASHTABULA OH- Edgewood might be a new member of the YSN family, but they are not new to seeing tremendous athletes come through their program. They have a rich history of incredible players in multiple sports that have dawned a Warriors uniform. That makes it a special moment when a new player can put their stamp on the Edgewood program. Kaci Kanicki was able to become their newest member of the 1,000 point club early this season proving she needs a spot in the Warriors wall of legends.

Through 5 games Kanicki is averaging 22 points per game.  She is almost averaging a double double with 8.5 rebounds per contest as well.  She’s also a very efficient scorer, shooting 52% from the field so far.  Last year, Kaci finished the season averaging 17.7 points per contest, and 6.6 rebounds.

Kanicki took some time this week to come to YSN’s Running Point and talk about her season, and her 1,000 point moment. She also talks to Anthony Hartwig about the personality of the Warriors locker room, what her future goals might entail, and so much more. EDGEWOOD PROTECTS HOME COURT AGAINST RAIDERS

ASHTABULA OH- Edgewood opened the season on Tuesday night welcoming in a historically good program in South Range. The Warriors were set on protecting their home court and showed no signs of intimidation.  The two teams battled to open the game. The score was tied 11-11 after one frame, and then the halftime break saw the Warriors have a slim 23-21 lead. However a big second half would let them walk away with a 51-41 win.

Katie McCollister had an 11 point first half, she would finish with 13. While the Raiders slowed her down in the second half, they could not stop the supporting cast of Edgewood.  Kaci Kanicki went off in the final two frames finishing with a team high 23 points. Annie Johnston was also in double figures with 12.

Edgewood continues the season on Friday as they travel to Chaney. South Range will return home for their home opener on Monday hosting Boardman.

WILDCATS WILL NOT BE STOPPED

STRUTHERS OH- Both teams were back in the playoffs with a winning record and both teams looked to prove to one another just who can come out on top and make noise in Division four region 13.  For Struthers, this was the first winning season under coach John Bayuk, who had coached this team from a one and four record all the way to a six and four regular season finish.  For Edgewood, coach Olajuwon Cooper gave the Warriors their first winning season since 2012 and looked to pull off the upset at the Laddie J Fedor Fieldhouse.  Struthers and Edgewood have bet four times before with the Wildcats outlasting them (48-22, 30-7, 35-0, and 59-6).

Struthers got on the first big play in which they recovered the opening kickoff.  Few plays later and star senior Alec Grzyb took the QB option into the endzone for a touchdown going up 7-0 early.  Next possession, it was Tyler Sanchez, part of the three headed backs in the backfield who took the handoff from Grzyb and went five yard making it 14-0.  Grzyb scored two more times in the first half.  The first took one play before he made a few men miss, going 78-yards to the endzone, and then in the second quarter from 54-yards out making it 27-0.  To end the half, the ground and puns game continued with Anthony Carter who after only one play shot up the middle for an 86-yard touchdown as the score was now 34-0 at the half.

Coach Cooper and the Warriors were in desperate need for a second half turnaround and tried to make the biggest comeback.  Unfortunately that thought was short-lived.  Most of the second team came into the game, getting some playoff experience for when some of these players take the starting roles next year.  Sanchez scored for his final play of the night making it 41-0 and even the young Kendis Macleod made some noise scoring a touchdown late going up 49-0.  Junior Najier Howard would come into play at quarterback  to get reps at this time too.

Edgewood scored two late touchdowns, preventing a shutout.  Senior quarterback Tony Hall would find Austin Zak twice, one in the back of the endzone from 14-yards and the second for a gain of 45.  It would not be enough to make the comeback as the Warriors, with their best season since 2012 under coach Cooper, finished off the season with a 6-5 record, falling against the Wildcats 49-14.  This team has a bright future where they look to make noise in 2023.

Struthers Stats:

Alec Grzyb: 2 of 2 for 48 yards passing

8 rushes, 163 yards and three touchdowns

Tyler Sanchez: 8 rushes for 103 yards and three touchdowns

Anthony Carter: 5 rushes for 116 yards and a touchdown.

Kendis Macleod: 12 rushes for 41 yards, one touchdown.

Devin Braham: two rushes for 16 yards.

Chaz Ekoniak: two receptions for 48 yards.

Edgewood stats:

Tony Hall: 21 of 37 for 207 yards and two touchdowns.

Zeke Lucas: 12 rushes for 46 yards

Christian Cunningham: four receptions for 41 yards.

Austin Zall: three receptions for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

Jacob Ernst: three receptions for 28 yards.

Up Next:

9th seeded Edgewood finished their season with a 6-5 record in DIV region 13 and will look to build off that success for the 2023 season.

8th seeded Struthers (7-4, 5-2 in NE8) will make the trip to Clinton Heacock Stadium to take on the number one seeded West Branch Warriors (10-1, 5-0 in Northeastern Buckeye).

After the game, YSNs Ian O’Brien caught up with the winning coach John Bayuk about his first playoff victory, and the way they were able to capitalize early on for the victory.

A BATTLE FOR THE AGES IN THE DRAGON’S DEN

ASHTABULA, OH-The annual matchup between the Lakeside Dragons and Edgewood Warriors has produced some of Ashtabula county’s most thrilling and hard-fought games ever seen and Friday night was no exception. In this year’s rendition of the “Battle for the Bridge,” the Edgewood Warriors would come out on top with a 32-28 victory that would culminate with one last defensive stop at the 1-yard line.

The Warriors started the game in electric fashion with senior Christian Cunningham taking the opening kickoff on a 65-yard house call. The next score would come from the Warriors on a 21-yard pass from Ashtabula county’s leading passer, junior Tony Hall to Christian Cunningham followed by a two-point conversion to junior Jacob Ernst making the game score 14-0 Edgewood. The Lakeside Dragons offense would struggle throughout the first quarter and started the second quarter by throwing an interception caught by Edgewood’s Jacob Ernst. That turnover would develop into another touchdown for the Edgewood Warriors by way of a ten-yard connection between the Warriors Hall and Cunningham and an unsuccessful two-point conversion making the score 20-0. The Dragons would evade disaster after a fumble and pass interference would open the door for the visiting Warriors to potentially take a 4-score lead. The Dragons defense would step up and force a turnover on downs. That series would awaken the Lakeside offense as well and the Dragons rushing attack led by junior QB Alex DiSalvitore and sophomore Nate Bartone and would end in a 10-yard touchdown run by Bartone and two-point conversion to senior Kam Crockett making the new score 20-8. Lakeside would start the second half on fire gouging the Warriors defense for big gains both in the air on the ground resulting in a 12-yard pass from Disalvatore to Lakeside senior Malachi Matlock and an unsuccessful two-point conversion with a new score of 20-14. The Warriors offense would answer right back on the ensuing possession with a 14-yard touchdown pass to junior Logan Kray and unsuccessful two-point conversion for a new score of 26-14. The Lakeside offense would continue to find success on the ground on their next possession in the fourth quarter with a 1-yard touchdown and 2-point conversion run by Bartone and a new score of 26-22. The Edgewood Warriors responded with a 22-yard screen pass from Tony Hall to Jacob Ernst but could not convert the two-point conversion and a new score of 32-26.

Lakeside would not give up, answering with their own touchdown on a 1-yard run by Bartone with an unsuccessful two-point conversion and a new score of 32-28. The games final four minutes would result in some of the most exciting, back and forth, anxiety ridden football any fan could fathom. Lakeside following their score to put them down by just 4 points would get a successful onside kick giving them a chance to take the lead for the first time in the game. Lakeside’s offense would sputter and turn over the ball going four and out and giving the Warriors the ball with 2:37 on the clock.

The Dragons would have one final shot at keeping the Battle of the Bridge trophy after an interception caught by senior Angelo Collazo placed the Dragons on the 30-yard line with just under two minutes on the clock and no timeouts for either team. The final play of the game would come with just 7 seconds on the clock and would end in heartbreaking fashion for the Dragons as the Warriors would stop Lakeside’s Angelo Collazo on the 1-yard line in an ending that was reminiscent of Kevin Dyson’s outstretched hand in Super Bowl 34.

One of the points discussed in the pregame build-up was that in order for Edgewood to come out on top Warriors junior quarterback Tony Hall would have to place his stamp on this rivalry. His 4 touchdowns and 260-yard night did just that.  With playoff seeding on the line for both teams for the first time in the rivalries’ history this game was every bit as entertaining as advertised and will serve as motivation for both teams for years to come.

Points are still being divvied and assigned but at the time of this article, it appears both Lakeside and Edgewood will continue their seasons into week 11 with Lakeside most likely traveling to Riverside and Edgewood to play Struthers on the road unless Salem beats West Branch which would result in Edgewood playing Jefferson at Jefferson in a rematch.

Best of luck to both teams on their playoff journey.

EDGEWOOD BATTLES TO A SCORELESS TIE

PERRY OH- Edgewood made a pretty good trip to Perry on Thursday and it was such a battle. Both teams had a couple chances, but in the end the defenses would prevail in a 0-0 tie. Warrior senior Emily Weeks will continue to try and put pressure on defenses as she leases the team in points.

Edgewood is still working hard trying to find their first win since the first week of September. They definitely got close against the Pirates. Edgewood will have another shot at it on Saturday as they host Cornerstone Christian. The Patriots will come in to that game with a 4-7 record overall. Edgewood is now 2-9-1.

NICHOLAS RIDES INTO THE SUNSET

ASHTABULA OH- Look out YSN nation, here comes Edgewood! As we welcome in the Warriors into the fold, lets take time to highlight one of their impressive senior athletes. If you said  Joclyn Nicholas was a busy person, that would be an understatement. She is a senior captain on the volleyball team, she also competes in cross country, and she is a decorated horseback rider. When asked what she does in her off time, she says she runs a photography business.

On the floor Nicholas is a great middle blocker for the Warriors. As a middle, she is the first line of defense for her team. When she first was put into this position as a young volleyball player, it was not what she wanted. Now she relishes in the feeling of a big block and being the player that keeps the opponents from putting the ball on the floor. Nothing beats the feeling of a big block at the net. It can dramatically turn the momentum of a game. Joclyn was a leader in the 11 win Edgewood team in 2021, and promises to be a big reason why they succeed in 2022.

Joclyn was able to talk to YSN’s Anthony Hartwig earlier this week to talk about her senior season. She talks about the other things that keeps her busy, the culture of Edgewood, and so much more. Check out the first of many profiles on Edgewood athletes only on YSN.

EDGEWOOD OPENS WITH A THRILLING WIN

ASHTABULA OH- In their YSN debut Edgewood, and Conneaut put on an absolute show. In a old school physical grudge match, Edgewood scored a late two point conversion to win 15-14.

After a scoreless first quarter, Conneaut scored first. Wyatt Payne capped off a 71 yard scoring drive with a 4 yard touchdown.  Edgewood would respond with a flash. A 70 yard interception return for a touchdown by Jacob Ernst tied the game at 7-7.

After Payne’s second trip to pay dirt of the night, Conneaut took a 14-7 lead. With time winding down in the game, Edgewood had one final drive left in them.  After a couple of tries at the goal line, Edgewood finally punched one in as Seth Enos scored from 6 yards out.  But the Warriors weren’t done, they made the gutsy decision to go for the lead with a two point conversion. It paid off as the try succeeded and it gave Edgewood the 15-14 win.

Edgewood will hit the road in Week 2 as they play at Grand Valley on Friday. Conneaut will travel to Western Reserve for another road test.

EAGLES WILL STAY AT HOME FOR DISTRICTS

Hubbard scored on a single by Gillian Ryser in the first inning, a single by Phoebe Rusnak in the first inning, a single by Lauren Komorek in the second inning, and a single by Grace Narkum in the second inning.

Hubbard got on the board in the first inning when Ryser singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.

Edgewood put up three runs in the third inning. They scored their runs on a home run by Sophia Paolillo.

Kaitlyn Ezzone took the loss for Edgewood. The pitcher went five and two-thirds innings, allowing ten runs on 13 hits, striking out four and walking zero.

The Warriors tallied six hits in the game. Paolillo and Claire Randolph each managed multiple hits. Randolph and Paolillo each collected two hits to lead.
