From the very first snap to the final whistle, both teams fought valiantly, but it was Edgewood that emerged triumphant with a final score of 58-20.

The game kicked off with a bang as Chamir Franklin of Liberty ignited the excitement with a breathtaking 75-yard run touchdown. However, the extra point attempt fell short, setting the stage for an intense battle. Edgewood responded swiftly, with Tony Hall orchestrating a seamless 7-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Braat. In the third quarter, Edgewood’s offense remained relentless. Tony Hall’s connection with Zeke Lucas resulted in a spectacular 25-yard touchdown pass. Despite the missed extra point, Edgewood’s lead expanded to 28-6. Another Hall-to-Zall connection, this time for 5 yards, added to Edgewood’s mounting advantage, with the score now at 34-6.

Liberty, determined to stage a comeback, fought back with an 8-yard pass from Tawann Tutwiler to Dwayne Moody, reducing the gap to 34-12. The team’s persistence paid off once again as Tutwiler found Julius Ferrell for a 14-yard touchdown pass. A successful two-point conversion narrowed the margin further, with the score standing at 34-20 at the end of the third quarter.

Edgewood’s momentum was unyielding in the final quarter. Seth Enos sprinted 27 yards for a touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion, bolstering the score to 42-20. Zeke Lucas then broke free for a 40-yard touchdown run, with another successful two-point conversion making it 50-20 in favor of Edgewood.

The final moments of the game were punctuated by Edgewood’s relentless spirit. A 15-yard interception return for a touchdown, masterfully caught by Seth Enos, was complemented by a successful two-point conversion run by Tony Hall, sealing the deal with a remarkable 58-20 victory.

PLAYER PROFILE: EDGEWOOD WARRIOR’S TONY HALL

East Palestine, OH- The air is electric with anticipation as the Edgewood Warriors prepare to embark on a new football season, armed with renewed enthusiasm and a revamped roster. Leading the charge is senior quarterback Tony Hall, whose impressive stats from the previous season have set the stage for high expectations. With a veteran-packed team and a deep pool of talent, the Edgewood Warriors are gearing up for a triumphant 2023 season that promises to be nothing short of spectacular.

In a candid interview with the Warriors’ broadcast team, Larry Jennings and Mike Olekshuk, Tony Hall shared insights into his preparation for the upcoming season. When asked about his approach to leadership, Hall emphasized the importance of leading by example both on and off the field. He spoke passionately about the bond that has formed among the players, attributing their success to their unwavering commitment to one another.

Hall’s dedication to improvement was also evident as he discussed his offseason training regimen. He highlighted his focus on refining his throwing technique and decision-making skills while also dedicating time to studying game strategies. This dedication reflects not only his personal drive but also his responsibility as a leader to elevate the entire team.

Looking ahead, Hall expressed excitement about the challenges that lie ahead. He acknowledged the tough competition in the league but remained steadfast in his belief in the Warriors’ capabilities. The interview painted a picture of a leader who is determined to make the most of his senior season and leave a lasting legacy on the Edgewood Warriors.

WARRIORS BANKING ON EXPERIENCE TO REACH NEW HEIGHTS: 2023 EDGEWOOD FOOTBALL PREVIEW

East Palestine, OH- The Edgewood Warriors are gearing up for an electrifying 2023 high school football season, and all eyes are on their impressive roster and determined coaching staff as they prepare to take the field. After a playoff season in 2022 that concluded with a solid 6-5 record, the Warriors are hungry for more success and are armed with a lineup that boasts both experience and raw talent.

Last year’s campaign saw the Warriors wave goodbye to some key playmakers due to graduation, including their leading receiver Christian Cunningham. Despite this setback, the team’s youthful core showed immense promise and resilience, setting the stage for what’s to come this year. With an incredible 15 seniors and 20 starters who have honed their skills over at least two years of varsity playing time, the Warriors are now Ashtabula County’s most seasoned team.

The offensive front will remain a stronghold for the Warriors, as their entire offensive line from the previous year returns, led by the exceptional Nick Barger. Barger’s intelligence and strength make him a cornerstone of the team, particularly as a reliable pass protector. Under center, the Warriors will have the privilege of fielding Tony Hall, Ashtabula County’s leading passer from the 2022 season. Hall’s impressive stats from his inaugural year as the full-time starter—nearly 1,900 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and just 8 interceptions—demonstrate his prowess and potential.

The receiving corps stands as one of the Warriors’ strongest assets, featuring names like Anthony Hunt, Jacob Ernst, and Zach Carlton-Hull. Hunt’s precision, Ernst’s athleticism, and Carlton-Hull’s agility create a formidable trio that promises to keep opponents on their toes. Additional talents like Austin Zall, Ben Schwartfigure, and Michael Bisbey further deepen the pool of pass-catching abilities.

In the backfield, the tandem of Zeke Lucas and Seth Enos offers a blend of power and resilience that sets them apart. These running backs are known for their exceptional strength, often requiring more than a single hit to bring them down. Moreover, their blocking skills provide an extra layer of protection for Hall, the quarterback.

While offense captured attention in 2022, the Warriors’ coaching staff has placed a strong emphasis on defense as they prepare for the forthcoming season. With the return of the formidable linebacking duo, Seth Enos and Zeke Lucas, who collectively tallied over 200 tackles last year, the team has a solid foundation to build upon. The defensive line’s performance is expected to elevate, and playmaking abilities within the defensive backs, led by Hunter Braat who snagged 4 interceptions in 2022, are poised to keep opponents on their toes.

The Warriors’ 2023 schedule will see some new faces, with four fresh opponents added. Youngstown Liberty will serve as their home opener, followed by matchups against Painesville Harvey, Hawken, and Madison. The final regular-season showdown against bitter rivals Lakeside, who the Warriors managed to best 32-28 last year, promises to be a thrilling conclusion.

Coach Olajuwon Cooper exudes confidence in this year’s roster, describing them as a potentially special group with a strong focus on high-level competition and fundamental excellence. The leadership of the 15 seniors is expected to be a driving force, guiding the team’s performance throughout the season. Cooper’s assertion that success hinges on consistently playing at a high level and imposing their will on opponents underscores the Warriors’ determination. Coach Cooper was quoted “We can be expected to compete at a high level and be a fundamentally sound football team in all facets of the game. Our 15 seniors provide great leadership and will be catalyst for us all season. To be successful this season we must consistently play at a high level and dictate games to our opponents. We are looking to impose our will and do whatever it takes to win. We’ve had a great offseason and now it’s time for that work to pay off!”

For fans eager to witness this exciting journey unfold, all of the Warriors’ games will be available to stream live on www.YSNlive.com. As the Edgewood Warriors gear up to make their mark on the 2023 high school football season, anticipation and excitement are reaching a fever pitch. This year holds the promise of memorable moments, fierce competition, and the unwavering spirit of the Warriors’ community rallying behind their team.

EDGEWOOD VOLLEYBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH KYRA VENCILL

ASHTABULA OH- Edgewood is one of the hallmark athletic programs of Ashtabula county.  That doesn’t change during volleyball season for sure. They have one of the strongest defenses you’ll find in the area, and that’s because of the experience they carry in the back row.  As far as their power on the net goes, they still have plenty of talent to contend with when you’re looking across the net at them.  Kyra Vencill has the reigns of the volleyball program again, and that makes just another member of the Vencill family in the Edgewood coach’s room.  She spends almost every day of the year coaching some kind of volleyball. Edgewood will use her experience to navigate another year carrying a tough schedule.

Coach Vencill sat down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to give us a solid preview of their upcoming season.  They talk about the experience she’ll have on the roster, being another Vencill in Edgewood, and so much more. Check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner With Kyra Vencill only on YSN.

OHSAA DISTRIBUTES SCHOLARSHIPS

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio High School Athletic Association and its six District Athletic Boards have awarded $169,000 in college scholarships to 169 recent high school graduates following selections made by each of the OHSAA’s six District Athletic Boards.

Each of the 169 scholarships is a $1,000 award. The OHSAA’s college scholarship program, now in its 29th year, returned in 2022 following a two-year hiatus due to pandemic-related financial constraints.

“The college scholarship program is a point of pride for our District Athletic Boards, OHSAA staff, Board of Directors and member schools,” said OHSAA Executive Director Doug Ute. “These student-athletes represent the very best of high school athletics, and it is an honor for us to help these young leaders work toward their educational and career goals. We congratulate them on their accomplishments and look forward to celebrating their future achievements.”

More About the Scholar-Athlete Selection Process

Scholar-athlete recipients are selected based on a point system which rewards students for grade point averages; class rank; community service activities; varsity letters earned; and individual and team athletic honors. The number of scholarship recipients from each district are based upon the number of schools within the district. The recipients were selected by special committees within each of the OHSAA’s six athletic districts. Individuals who receive athletic scholarships from NCAA Division I or II institutions or appointees to military academies are not eligible for an award.
