HOWLAND PASSES BIG TEST

WARREN, OHIO- The Howland Tigers achieved their first win on the season when they defeated Crestwood 5-2. After going down 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning, the Tigers scored 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth and one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure their victory.

Brooke Tatar had a stellar night at both the plate and on the circle as she went 2 for 3 and scored 2 runs at the plate and pitched seven innings allowing 3 hits, 2 runs, and had 8 strikeouts.

Howland will be on the road when they travel to take on Geneva this Friday. 

REBELS ROLL PAST CAMPBELL

CAMPBELL, OHIO- In what was a close game at the finish, the Crestview Rebels hung on to defeat Campbell Memorial 8-4 after Campbell made a late push in the game.

The big inning for the Rebels was when they scored four runs in the top of the 3rd to go up 6-1. Brenna Figley went 2 for 4 and scored 3 runs while Katie Lissi went 4 for 4 at the plate.

Brooke Brubaker was in the circle for Crestview and pitched 6 innings allowing 4 hits, and had 9 strikeouts.

Mileena Williams had a productive night as she went 2 for 4 and scored a run in the losing effort for the Red Devils. Ramani Adams went seven innings on the mound allowing 12 hits, 8 runs, and had 11 strikeouts.

Crestview will be back in action when they take on Mcdonald at home on Friday. Campbell will travel to take on Harding on Friday.

WARRIORS SWEEP AWAY LIBERTY

LIBERTY, OHIO- The stellar start to the season continued for Brookfield as they came out on top once again over Liberty 12-0.

Brookfield got down to business immeadiatley as they scored 6 runs in the first inning. The Warriors finished with 12 hits on the day and were led by Abby Dejoy who went 3 for 4 at the plate including a home run in the fifth inning.

Miranda Nicholson had a productive day in the circle allowing 5 hits,1 run, and striking out 13. Rachel Strohmeyer was the losing pitcher on the mound for the Leopards allowing 12 hits, 12 runs, and had 4 strikeouts.

The Warriors will be back on the diamond when they take on Western Reserve this Saturday. Liberty will try to get into the win column for the first time this season when they take on Springfield this Saturday.  

BADGER GETS THEIR SEASON STARTED

KINSMAN, OHIO- The Badger Braves started the season off on a high note as they took down Lordstown 10-0 in five innings of play.

The Braves were led by Brad Hamilton who went for 2 at the plate and as well as being a dominant force on the pitchers mound striking out 11 men at the plate and only allowing 3 hits. The Braves were also dominant on the base running side of things as they finished the game with a total of 12  stolen bases.

The Braves will look to keep the momentum going when they take on Bristol on Wednesday.

DENNEY CALLS GAME IN EXTRAS

POLAND, OHIO- In what was a thriller extra innings game, the Poland Bulldogs walked it off in the bottom of the ninth to take down Hubbard 3-2.

Poland jumped to an early lead after scoring a run in the second and third innings to go up 2-0 and were led by Teagan McCurdy, who went 2 for 2 and Chris Denney, who went 2 for 4 including hitting the walk off double to seal the win for the Bulldogs.

Hubbard did not go down without a fight as they tied the game at 2 in the top of the 7th inning to extend the game only to come up just a little short in extra innings. The main pitcher for the Bulldogs was Ryan Dilullo, who pitched six innings allowing 4 hits and had 9 strikeouts. Andrew Kali was the main pitcher for the Eagles, pitching four innings and allowing 7 hits, 2 runs, and 3 strikeouts.

Hubbard will tavel to Howland this Saturday to take on the Tigers. Poland will travel to Struthers on Monday. 

SPARTANS COME OUT VICTORIOUS

BOARDMAN OH- Boardman opened up their home slate by beating Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Varsity Lions 6-1 on Thursday.

Gabi Sferra toed the rubber for the Spartans. She lasted seven innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out an impressive 14 batters.

Alex Mould was on the rubber for Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. She allowed 12 hits and six runs over six innings, striking out nine and walking one.

Boardman racked up 13 hits in the game. Natalie Davis, Ava Freeborough, Cami Goske, and Tori Strines each managed multiple hits. Davis led with four hits in four at bats. Boardman was also sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Maddie Wymer had the most chances in the field with 16.

Boardman is scheduled to go back on the road Friday night as they travel to Green. First pitch is slated for 5:00.

POLAND OPENS NEW FIELD WITH A WIN

POLAND OH- It was an exciting night in Poland as the Bulldogs got to play on campus for the first time since 2007.  With a brand new softball field done and ready to go, the Bulldogs christened it with a 8-2 victory over Hubbard.  Poland Hall if Famers Reid Lamport and Erin Gabriel threw out the first pitch, and Katie McDonald took it from there.

The Bulldogs ace in the circle threw all 7 innings while striking out 12. She gave up 1 earned run on 5 hits.

Not only did McDonald give Poland their first win on a new field, she also launched the Bulldogs first home run in their new home.  Eliana Thompson had a great day at the plate for Poland at the top of their lineup. She went 3-4 and crossed the plate twice. Kylie Hudran also went 3-4 from the eight spot in the lineup. She gathered a RBI as well.  Leanna Boccieri drove in 2 runs on a 2-4 day.

Hubbard was led at the plate by Lauren Kamorek who went 1-3 with a HR and a RBI.  Alyssa Gregory went 1-3 as well with a RBI.  Jillian Palumbo went 1-2 with a double.

Poland is scheduled to play 2 games on Saturday at home against Chalker. The first pitches of those games are at 1:00 and 5:00.

HOBAN SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH KEVIN YUN

AKRON OH- It’s officially softball season and the Hoban Knights are hungry! They were one step away from a trip to Firestone a year ago. Bringing back a ton of players that have been through that makes the Knights devoted to success this year. They know exactly what the expectations are for a team as high of caliber as them.  That makes coaching them an easy job for Kevin Yun.  He doesn’t have to stay on them about goals and standards.  They know all too well what it takes. The Knights will test themselves a lot with their independent schedule to prepare them for the division 1 District bracket.

Coach Yun was kind enough to take the time to chat with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to give us our first interview from Hoban softball.  He talks about managing the expectations of Hoban athletics, the hunger to get back to regionals this season, and much more. COLUMBIANA SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH DARYL KURTZ

COLUMBIANA OH- There aren’t a lot of programs in the area that are as exciting coming in to the season that Columbiana. As spring approaches the anticipation of the season continues.  The Clippers have a ton of talent on their roster this season, and a lot of it is young and promising.  With a great mix of strong arms in the circle, and power bats spread throughout the lineup the Clippers will be a formidable foe to anyone who crosses them. Columbiana has won their first game of the season against Boardman 4-3, and find themselves on the field again Thursday traveling to Salem.

Clippers head coach Daryl Kurtz starts his second year at the helm. He joined YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to preview this season. They talk about the premiere pitching that the Clippers will feature, the schedule they have put in front of them, and much more.
