WARRIORS RING THE VICTORY BELL

Beloit OH- Coach Brown and West Branch were looking for a momentum building win before tournament play starts in just one week. The Warriors were able to grab that quality win over Girard 51-41 who came into the game with a 14-6 record.

Both teams really struggled to shoot the ball especially in the first half. The Warriors picked things up in the second half as they shot it better, hitting some big shots, but Girard continued to struggle from the perimeter. Most of the Indians’ points came off of layups.

On senior night, Senior Dru Deshields was able to score his final basket with West Branch as he has been out the whole year with an Injury. The cheers from both West Branch and Girard were heartwarming to see as Dru came off the court after making a layup.

Joey JacksonJackson had a solid performance with 15 points. He was able to knock down two three pointers as well. Cooper Anderson was strong also scoring 11 points and doing a great job rebounding. Finally, sophomore Camden Lane was big down the stretch scoring some important baskets.

The Warriors had a difficult time stopping Thomas Cardiero who led all scorers with 19 points. Mike Palmer contributed 10 points for the Indians.

With the win, West Branch improves to 11-9 on the season. The Warriors will travel to Columbiana to take on Heartland Christian tonight at 7 pm. Girard drops to 14-7 and will be back in action on Tuesday at Springfield.

CARDIERO KEEPS IT COOL

GIRARD OH- The NE8 has been wild in boys basketball this season.  The chaos is real. We’ve seen teams near the bottom of the standings beat the teams near the top. Every game ever night seems to be decided by one possession.  With all the chaos, the teams that consistently succeed are the ones with the leaders who can keep it cool. Girard has one of those in Thomas Cardiero.

Cardiero has always been a premiere player of not just the conference, but also the entire coverage map.  This season however, his attitude, and work ethic has taken Girard to the next level. They’ve been consistently in the top tier of the NE8 conference.  The example that Cardiero has set for the roster has turned the Indians into a deep team that has multiple weapons to beat you. It is that leadership, and that talent that has risen Cardiero and his teammates to the place they’re at.

Cardiero took the time to sit down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig about his senior campaign. They discuss his family legacy at Girard, what his relationship with his teammates is like, and much more. Check out the latest Girard Basketball Player Profile only on YSN!

GIRARD LEAVES THE RAIDERS SHIPWRECKED

CANFIELD OH- South Range has been a tough place to play for Girard over the years.  They have never beaten the Raiders in Canfield since the NE8 was born.  Earlier this season the Indians got their first conference victory over the Raiders, and now they eyed a season sweep.  After a close first quarter, it was a big 20-6 2nd quarter that gave Girard the distance they’d need.  Even though the Raiders tried to rally in the second half, the 17 point halftime lead was too much to come back from. The closest the Raiders got was eight points.  The Indians would go on to secure the win 44-35.

Sieasia Triplett led the Indians with 13 points. Girard was pretty balanced on offense having four players score more than 7.  Abbie Rafferty was also in double figures with 10 points.  Allison Durkin chipped in 9 points to the offense.  Mia Malito added 7 points as well.

South Range was paced by Sydney Penick with 11 points.  Emma Cunningham tried to Will her team back into the game scoring all 7 of her points in the second half.  Devin Sauerwein and Maddie Dado both finished the night with 5.

Girard will take this big win in stride and move on to play at Niles on Monday.  South Range will play their last home game of the season on Monday against Struthers.

WILDCATS PUT ON A SHOW IN STRUTHERS

STRUTHERS OH- If you are a fan of offense, you would have been right at home in the Struthers Fieldhouse on Thursday night.  Struthers welcomed in Girard for a huge matchup inside the NE8.  Girard needed a win to draw even with the Wildcats and stay one game back from the top spot. Struthers needed a win to set up a first place game with Poland.  The stars came out on the big stage as both teams put up a fantastic offensive effort, however it was Struthers that had a little more fire power in a 74-63 win.

Chloe Neider had the night of her career. When the Wildcats needed her most she dropped an eye popping 36 points to lead the way.  She wasn’t alone though, Emma Morris shined as well as she went off for 23 points.  Katelyn Kimble was also in double figures for the high powered offense with 19.  Faith Stellato hit a trio of threes to finish with 9 points.

Sieasia Triplett put everything she had on the floor for Girard finishing the game with a team-high 23 points.  Allison Durkin hit a pair of threes on her way to 18 points.  Abbie Rafferty was also in double figures for Girard finishing with 10 points.

Struthers now sets up a battle for first place at home on Monday as Poland comes to town.  Girard will stay on the road Monday as they go to Jefferson to try and bounce back.

LEON’S GAME WINNER SHAKES UP THE NE8

GIRARD OH- South Range came in Tuesday as quite possibly the hottest team in the NE8. They had won 6 of their last 7 games. Girard on the other hand was trying to wash off a tough 2 point loss to Struthers on Friday.  The Indians have been no stranger to close games either. They are used to it coming out their way.  On this night, after Girard hit a free throw to take a 59-58 lead with a handful of seconds left Ayden Leon came down on the other end and hit a bucket to give South Range an exciting 60-59 win.  It was the Raiders second game winning shot in 7 days.

Luke Rohan hit 6 shots from behind the arc on his way to a team high 18 points.  Leon wasn’t going to be held down as he bullied his way to 15 points.  Landon Moore was also in double figures for the Raiders with 11 points.

Thomas Cardiero was tough to stop as he paced the Indians with a game-high 23 points.  Gus Johnson was right behind him with 22.  Michael Palmer worked hard to be able to contribute 8 points.

South Range now has another matchup with a top tier NE8 team as they welcome Jefferson into their home gym on Friday night.  Girard will hit the road to try to bounce back against Lakeview in Cortland.

IRISH PROVE TOO TOUGH FOR INDIANS

YOUNGSTOWN OH- It was an intriguing non conference matchup on tap Saturday afternoon as Ursuline welcomed in a strong Girard team.  After facing some adversity early, the Irish put their heads down and ran through the Indians 57-47.

Alayna Smith led the Irish charge as she scored a game-high 19 points for them. Trinity Lamb was also in double figures for Ursuline with 11 points.  Chelsea Johnson was just one off the double figure pads as she scored 9.  Meredith Gray added 8 points to the cause.

Girard led by 10 at halftime and it had a lot to do with Sieasia Triplett’s 11 points in the first two frames. She would finish with 14.  Allison Durkin was 6/8 at the free throw line on the way to 12 points.  Abbie Rafferty was also in double figures for Girard with 10 points.

Ursuline gets back to it next Saturday as they host Salem.  Girard gets back to NE8 play on Monday as they play at home against Hubbard.

GIRARD BREATHES EASY DOWN THE STRETCH

NILES OH- Last time these two met, it came down to one point. This time, it was different as a tough first half battle soon turned into a one sided affair in the second half as the Girard Indians remain undefeated in the NE8 after sweeping and beating rival Niles by the final of 66-37 on Tuesday at Niles McKinley High School.

For Niles, the only one who scored in the double digits was Matthew Kozak with 11 points.  That would be followed up by a combined 14 by Anthony Budak and Robert Strickland, six for Keyshon Talley, four for Sam Perrone and two for Stephon Dorsey.

Girard (12-2, 8-0 in NE8) will travel to Struthers to take on the Wildcats (7-5,4-3).  Niles (9-5 4-4 in NE8) will travel to North Lima to take on the South Range Raiders (5-6, 3-3)  in hopes of sweeping them.  After the game, Ian O’Brien caught up with coach Craig Hannon and player of the game Gus Johnson about the game and what to expect Friday against the Wildcats.

GIRARD SHAKES UP THE NE8

GIRARD OH- In the last matchup between these two conference rivals, the lady Indians of Girard only shot 18 percent.  Coach Andy Saxon knew that a change was needed and got that as a last second defensive effort gave the Girard Indians their first win in a while against the Lady Poland Bulldogs 37 to 35.

For Girard, doing most on the court was Allison Durkin with a high of 22 points.  She’d be followed up by Mia Malito with six, Esra DeDe with five and finally Mackenzee White with four.

On the Lady Bulldogs side, it was Mary Brant leading them with 17 points.  Katie McDonald would score double digits as well with 11.  Both Brooke Row and Ariana Daniels combined for four points, and Sarah Forsyth had three.

After the game, Ian O’Brien caught up with coach Andy Saxon and Allison Durkin on the big win and the next game coming up against Lakeview.  Meanwhile, Poland will take on United on Saturday.

GIRARD COOLS OFF THE DRAGONS

GIRARD OH- After the big victory against the Lady Red Devils of Campbell, the lady Niles Red Dragons looked to have a big night against the Indians of Girard.  Unfortunately, a quick start turned into a one sided affair for the lady Indians as they pulled away, winning 66-36.

For Girard it was Sieasia Triplett who scored a high 17.  Combined for 14 points was Allison Durkin, Ezra Dede and Mia Malito, and Abbey Rafferty with nine.  Next, it was five points for Makenzee White, four for Aly Wakefield, three for Abby Iceman, and a combined four points then for Aly Gassman and Sophia Latell.

Girard will host Poland in a rematch looking to tie the series this season, while Niles will travel to take on the Lady Falcons of Jefferson. After, Ian O’Brien caught up with legendary coach Andy Saxon after the big win.
